"Honoring Heartland Heroes through Honor
Flight"
State Project 2015-2016
My state project for 2015-2016 is Honoring Heartland Heroes through Honor Flight. Most families have an ancestor that has served in the military. When WWII enacted a draft; almost every family had eligible members to send to war. That does mean that every family today knows that ancestor's story or has spent much time pondering their sacrifice. I chose the Honor Flight as my project because I have had the opportunity to see firsthand how this organization recognizes and honors these veterans.
Honor Flight's mission is to get WWII, and now Korean veterans, to Washington, D.C. to see their memorials. The organization is dedicated to providing veterans with honor and closure. By the time their memorials were complete, most WWII veterans no longer had the means and ability to get themselves to D.C. to see their memorials. I want to help Honor Flight complete their mission.
I have had the privilege of flying with an Honor Flight. I have seen the countless hours, phone calls, and fund raising that is required to send a veteran on one of these flights. I have also witnessed the impact that this organization has had on the veterans and their family members that have been honored.
These men and women are moved to tears by the Honor Flight experience and at the end of the day they leave for home with their heads held just a little higher. Families hear stories they have never before heard, they witness the cheering crowds, and they are thrilled that their loved ones are honored for their service.
Honor Flight points us to remember that the liberty that makes this nation great came at great cost and with much sacrifice. Please join me in honoring these outstanding Missouri men and women for their part in making our lives free.
Thank you for supporting my project: "Get the vets to D.C. ... Whatever it takes."
