Martha Ann Tharp was born August 18, 1834 in Logan County, Ohio to Abner Tharp and Sarah Moots.
She was a sister to Augustus Milton Tharp and Conrad Moots Tharp. She married first
Joshua Jasper Carter and they had 7 children. She married second Columbus Greene Carter,
a nephew of Joshua. They had 2 children. According to the local newspaper she died of
typhoid fever at the residence of her sister Christena Evelyn Tharp Smith in Wahoo, Nebraska on
December 8, 1881. At the time Columbus was in prison in Missouri serving life for murder.
He was eventually pardoned by the governor and moved to Visalia, California where he
married Rachel Darnell several years later.
