LIVONIA
Lies 3 miles w of the Chariton river, in Grant twp, Putnam Co., 17 miles e of Unionville (c h), and 12 w of Glenwood, its shipping point. It has Presbyterian and U. Brethren churches, and monthly services by Methodist and Christian sects. Ships ties, timber, hoops. walnut lumber, grain and stock. Pop., 800. Improved land $7 to $14 per acre: unimproved, $3 to $5. TERRE HAUTE
Is situated in Medicine twp, in the sw part of Putnam Co., 16 miles sw of Unionville (c h), its shipping point. Cattle and hogs are the chief shipments. Mail, tri-weekly.




SHONEYTOWN
A postoffice in the n part of Putnam Co., close to the Iowa State line, and 20 miles, via postal route, ne of Unionville (c h), and 8 (air line) ne of Howland, the nearest railroad station.




UNIONVILLE
The county seat of Putnam Co., was first settled in 1853, and is now an incorporated town, with a population of 904, according to the census of 1880. It is a station on the B. & S. W. Ry, 10 miles s of the Iowa State line, 128 from Burlington, Iowa, and 235 n w of St. Louis. During the past year many improvements have been made, notably in building, quite a number of fine business blocks having been erected, and in business prosperity the town has kept pace with the development of the surrounding country. It has 4 churches, Catholic, Christian, Methodist, and Presbyterian, good Public schools with suitable buildings, bodies of secret and benevolent societies, a bank, 2 weekly newspapers, a woolen and 2 flour mills, a good hall, with a seating capacity of 400, and 8 hotels. Of the latter, the Staples House is the favorite, being well managed and replete with every convenience. The New Century, Democratic newspaper, is ably edited and has a large circulation. The price of improved farms in this county ranges from $10 to $20 per acre, unimproved prairie, $8 to $5, bottom and timber land, $1 to $10. The principal shipments are grain, ties, staves, hoop poles, hogs and live stock. Tel., W. U. Ex, Am. Mail, daily James Turner, postmaster.
