Triplett Cemetery

This small burial plot is located 2 miles N of Platte City in the NW quarter of Township 23, Range 35, Section 53 of the land preempted by Capt. William Triplett, father of Black Triplett.

The farm was later sold to William H. Cook, grandfather of the present owner, Thomas H. Perry, Jr.

According to Paxton's Annals of Platte County, pages 321 and 322, Black Triplett and Gabriel Close were shot to death December 17, 1861 in retaliation for the death of two Federal soldiers killed in battle the day before. By order of Col. Morgan, the two men were taken to the same spot "on the south side of the road a hundred feet east of Bee Creek Bridge" for execution. The account of Close's death is a notable example of war-time savagery.
