Davis Chapel Cemetery

Davis Chapel Cemetery
Davis Chapel Cemetery, located on a hilltop in northern Platte County, midway between Dearborn and Edgerton, is known for the beautiful view it affords to far distances. Points to be picked out in the sweep of the horizon include: Rock House Prairie to the North, Gower northeast, beyond Nashua to the southeast, and the Kansas City International Airport due South - Buchanan, Clinton, Clay and Platte counties. A superb view in all seasons.

The cemetery is one of the oldest in the Platte Purchase. Mr. James Nichols, who came from eastern Tennessee to await, near Linden in Clay County, the day in February 1837 that he might enter the "promised land", brought from his native state cedars and hand hewn tombstones for the cemetery in the new country. The last of the cedars was removed a few years ago, more than a century old. Remnants of several of the Tennessee stones remain, the two bearing the names of his wife, Mary Nichols, and of his mother-in-law, Jane Cunningham, still intact but without dates.

The oldest dated stones are those for Daniel Varble 1843; Annie Jane Seal, 1846; and Mary A. Bretz, 1848. However, the earliest burial is said to have been that of Bob, a Negro slave belonging to Mr. Nichols believed to have occurred soon after 1837. His grave, like so many at the Chapel, has been lost, marked only by a limestone rock, unnamed and undated. When the Association was formed in 1949 to care for the cemetery, all rocks were removed and a concrete block substituted for each, set flush in the ground. A number of Negro slaves are buried here and, according to Mr. Sam Jones, at least one Indian.

In early deeds the cemetery is called "Lone Hill Graveyard", and again, "Garrison Hill Graveyard". The Methodist people, who had organized in 1857 and held meetings in the Bruce school house, in 1874 built their church adjoining the cemetery on land given by Mr. Thomas Butts. The Ishmael Davis family, who lived in short distance south of the church, were charter members, much loved and respected. Their oldest son, the Rev. J. C. C. Davis, was the pastor during the planning and building of the church; the name Davis Chapel was chosen to honor him and his family. The cemetery was thereafter known as the Davis Chapel Cemetery.
