The 1850 U.S. census for Canaan Township, Gasconade Co., Missouri taken on Oct. 29, 1850 lists: Martin Goodman, age 37, Male, farmer, born in Tennessee; Martha J. Goodman, age 14, Female; William J. Goodman, age 12, Male; John Goodman, age 10, male; Henry A. Goodman, age 8, and living next door was: William Goodman, age 56, Male, Blacksmith from Tennessee; Rohdin Goodman, age 55, Female from Tennessee.
There is no wife/mother listed in the above census, and I am wondering if anyone can explain who she was or what happened to her. Has anyone access to the death index, obituaries or cemeteries for the years 1842 - 1850? From the age of the youngest son Henry A. (age 8) she may have died at birth, or sometime within the 8 years following. Thanks, Bruce D. Burton
I am searching for my Goodman family in Kentucky, who originally came through Tennessee, and Missouri, (Gasconade and Phelps Counties Census). I wonder if anyone has come across them in their research, and would be willing to share information with me.
My great grandfather was Henry Albert Goodman, who joined the army at Binton Barracks during the civil war as a boy in Rolla, MO. and was discharged at Louisville, KY, and remained there the rest of his life. His father was Martin Goodman, from TN, according to the census records of 1850 and 1860. Here is some of the information I have gathered on them:
The 1850 U.S. census for Canaan Township, Gasconade Co., Missouri taken on Oct. 29, 1850 lists: Martin Goodman, age 37, Male, farmer, born in Tennessee; Martha J. Goodman, age 14, Female; William J. Goodman, age 12, Male; John Goodman, age 10, male; Henry A. Goodman, age 8, and living next door was: William Goodman, age 56, Male, Blacksmith from Tennessee; Rohdin Goodman, age 55, Female from Tennessee.
The 1860 U.S. Census for Rolla Twp., Phelps Co., MO, Pg.028, lists: J.M. Goodman 47, Male, Farmer, $600 personal property, $600 worth of land, from KY; E. Goodman, 39, Female from Virginia; J.L. Goodman, 17, Male, farmer from MO; H. A. Goodman, 15, Male, farmer from MO; M.C. Goodman, 4, Female from MO; E.M. Goodman, 9Mo., Male, from MO; J. Fuller, 14, Male, from Virginia; M. Ch----?, 22, Female, from TN. (This indicates that Martin was remarried sometime before 1855, and Henry had at least two half siblings. We don't know what to do with the 22 yr old F). Also the 1860 census, on Pg. 029 lists Henry's Brother Wm, now 24 years old as working as a laborer on a near-by farm owned by James Spengar? and family: Wm Goodman, 24, Male, Labour with $50 in personal property, and from MO.
Volunteer Enlistment: state of Missouri, town of Rolla, county of Gasconade; age 18, occupation- farmer, on the 7th day of Sept. 1862 (blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, height 5 ft. 6in.) Binton Barracks, MO. Company E, 32nd Regiment of MO. Infantry, for 3 years. It was reported he died on Jan. 27, 1863 on board steamer "Isabella", however he was reported absent on March & April 1863 roll call - as sick at St. Louis, MO since Jan. 23, 1863 (remained absent until roll call of March & April 1864) On May 29, 1865, they combined the Batt'n 31 & 32. He mustered out in Louisville KY on July 18, 1865. Clothing account from April to July was due $5.73; due $100 on arms and equipment. Bruce D. Burton
We are looking for my husband's Missouri ancestors. His mother was Bernice Alta Greensweight Clements, her father, Elmer Elsworth. He was a carpenter and was with the railroad. She--Cora Jane Maxwell Greensweight, ran a boarding house in Rolla for college students and they raised 8 children, all born in Rolla. A Lincoln Greensweight, born in PA, lived in Phelps Co., and married Ida Green, born in MO abt 1870. Their 2 oldest children, Blanche and Guy were also born in MO--probably Phelps Co. Apparently there were earlier Greensweights who lived in Phelps Co.
We think my husband's great grandfather was Stephen Greensweight, b. abt 1838 in PA and are looking to confirm. Also have found a Sarah Greensweight, buried in the Rolla Cemetery, listed as 2nd wife of "S." Is that the same Stephen?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. We plan to be in Rolla early next April to spend time visiting cemeteries, etc., to further our search. Thank you.I am trying to contact Gwen Murray Klinger I have information that she has asked for about William Cronicle Scott my great grandfather and a relative of hers. The email addresses she has posted are no longer valid. Judith

I am searching for parents and siblings and family bible and other history of my gg grandfather, Alfred Felix Huffman Sr b. 5/8/1798 in Jeffersonton, Culpeper County, Virginia. died 1869 or 1870 and reburied in the Elk Prairie Cemetery , near Rolla, Mo., Phelps County. He was originally buried at the old Huffman farm.
I would also like to know where the farm house was since he had approx 2500 acres in 1857 in the Elk Prairie Area. He married Sarah Janes Jones in Crawford County, Mo in 1835. I have info from an Anna the she thinks his parents might be John and Elizabeth Huffman in Virginia where she had traced their family bible but I do not know exactly who these persons were or their dates. I do have a name of a lady that has the bible and her address so I will try to write her for more information.
Alfreds house was used for a voting place early in Phelps countys history and he was a election judge. I have a notice in the newspaper to the effect that he was not responsible for anyone elses debts. Most important information from the Phelps County Genealogical Society Quarterly in about 1989 was a posting of his diary in about 1837 where he lists trips to virginia etc and items that he sold on the trip and other details he wanted to keep pertaining to family and business affairs. I would like to know where to find this diary so that I could see it, possibly for more information. Any information that you could share would be much appreciated as I would gladly share any info that I have. I am also trying to find civil war info about Alfred and his sons and sons in law, some of whom were union and some confederate as best I can determine.I saw a 1999 posting on rootweb forum asking about the Jones surname - namely a Sarah Jane Jones b. 1810 - I wonder if it could be the same Sarah Jane Jones who was my gg grandmother from knox co. tennessee and married a Thomas Calhoun Jones (a cousin) first and when he died in about 1834 she married my gg grandfather Alfred Felix Huffman in 1835 in crawford county Mo and there they raised her 3 sons and 9 more children. Along the way where they were became Phelps County, Mo and their farm was in Elk Prairie where they died in 1869 or 1870. They are buried at the Elk Prairie Cemetery.Alfred was born in Jeffersonton, Culpeper County, Va. in 1798. If this happens to be someone you know about I would appreciate hearing from you since their early years are very sketchy to me.
Her 3 sons were Hugh Lawson, William M. and Richard D. William M. went to the gold fields in California and died when he fell in a ditch breaking his neck.
Thanks for any help you can give.I'm looking for info on Charles Hampton and Mary Hughes who were married and from the St. James area. Also anything on Harvey Hughes and Sarah Jane Rose who were Mary's parents. Darren Young
