WALTER REDDICK
The funeral of Mr. Walter Reddick who was accidently killed at Bagnell Dam on March 6th, was held at his home at Springfield, MO. on Sunday, March 12th. He is survived by one son, also by three sisters and three brothers. Mr. & Mrs. J. F. Reddick, of Hobson, MO attended the funeral at Springfield, Mo.
VALENTINE STREHL
Mr. Valentine Strehl of the Metropolitan Insurance Company, of St. Louis, passed away at his home very suddenly last Sunday morning. He is survived by his wife and two sons. The funeral will take place today (Thursday) from Kriegshauser Funeral Parlor. Mrs. Strehle's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Franz of this city will attend.
ANNIE ISABEL FRAZIER
Mrs. Annie Isabel Frazier, age 77, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Marks, 2111 North Kellett Ave., Springfield, Mo., Sunday, March 12, 1933. She was united in marriage to Thos. R. Frazier. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Aetna B. Yelton of Newburg, Mo.; Mrs. Nellie Jones of Hawthorne, NJ; and Mrs. Marks; two sons, A.K. Frazier of Newburg and E. E. Frazier Granite City, Ill; two sisters, Mrs. J. D. Bradford of Lake, Mo. and Sallie Widner of Rolla; one brother, James Kester of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Mrs. Frazier joined the Primitive Baptist Church of Clark county, Ill. and was baptized on the fourth Sunday of September, 1876, by the Elder Colman Dawson. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p. m., March 13, 1933 at Brookshire Cemetery, services being conducted by Elder W. L. Bradford of Rolla, Mo.
ALBERT N. JACKSON
Albert N. Jackson, son of M. E. and Francis Jackson, was born July 1, 1902 and died March 10, 1933, age 30 years, 8 months and 5 days. He was united in marriage to Miss May Hall, May 7, 1921. To this union were born three children: Ailene, age 11, Paul, age 9 and Irene, age 6. He professed faith in Christ and was baptized in 1922 and lived faithful in the Lord's service until death. Besides his wife and children Mr. Jackson is survived by five brothers: J. C. Jackson and W. R. Jackson, Portland, Oregon; J. J. Jackson, Eugene, Oregon; and Frank and Earl Jackson of Edgar Springs and one sister, Mrs. Ora Heavins. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. O'dell. Interment took place at the Jackson Cemetery.
NATHAN SOUDERS
Mr. & Mrs. Charlie Ormsby and family were called to St. Louis by the sudden death of Mrs. Ormsby oldest brother, Nathan Souders, of Chicago. The remains were brought to St. Louis for burial Saturday. THE ROLLA HERALD 16 MARCH 1933
CLINTON HUCKINS
Mr. Clinton Huckins passed away suddenly at his home in St. Louis last Sunday morning. He was buried with Masonic honors from the Laughlin Funeral Home in that city. The deceased was a member of Rolla Lodge No. 213, A F & A M and Rolla Chapter No. 176 O.E.S. He leaves a wife, two sons and a little daughter to mourn his death. He is the nephew of Mrs. C. D. Huckins of Rolla. Those who attended the funeral from Rolla were Mr. & Mrs. C. D. Huckins, Mrs. T. D. Smith, Messrs Ed Koch and A. A. Smith.
WILLIAM SNYDER GIFT
William Snyder Gift was born at Rolla, Missouri, on June 11, 1877 and departed this life on April 8th, 1933, at the age of 56 years, 10 months and 27 days. He spent his early life near Rolla and on April 2nd, 1907 was married to Miss Lena Herberger. To this union was born one son who died in fancy. In 1907 he and his wife moved to Oklahoma and settled near Waukomis, Okla. where he spent the remainder of his life. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, Mrs. Lena Gift of Waukomis, Okla; F. L. Gift, Gray, Okla; two brothers, D. J. Gift, Waukamis, Ok., F. L. Gift, Gray, Okla; four sisters, Mrs. Kate Pritchet, Waukomis, Okla; Mrs. Mary Flint, Rolla, MO; Mrs. Sarah Lakens, Redwood City, Calif; Mrs. Annie Hull, Fresno, Calif; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Waukomis, in charge of Rev. Paul E Osman and the body laid to rest in the Waukomis cemetery.
HUGH CROSS
Benjamin Hugh Cross was born August 10, 1873 in Miller county, Mo, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lucy Brookshire, April 15, 1933. He was married to Rosa Thompson, August 12, 1892. to this union were born seven children. Three sons: Everett of San Francisco, Roy and Fred of Rolla, MO. and four daughters: Mrs. Walter Rugg of Dixon, Mo., Mrs. Alice Marlow of Rolla, Mrs. Delphia Brookshire of Beulah and Stella, who preceded him in death, March 5, 1927. A few weeks before his death, he had expressed his trust in the Lord and said he was ready to go. The high esteem in which he was held by the many friends was shown by the large crowd that came to pay their respects to him whose friendship they had treasured. He was laid to rest in Beulah Cemetery, April 16, 1933, funeral services being conducted by Elder W. L. Bradford of Rolla, MO.
MRS. JOHN C. WILSON
Ellen S. Grayson was born in Phelps county, July 4, 1861. She united in marriage to John C. Wilson, Nov. 8th, 1879. To this union 10 children were born, of whom seven survive, three having died in infancy. Mrs. Wilson passed away at St. Anthony's Hospital in St. Louis, April 1st, 1933. She leaves to mourn her death her children, Mrs. Maude Gunkle of Cleveland, Ohio; Jesse L. Wilson, Mrs. Nellie Greig, Mrs. Lulu Morrow, Mrs. Lillie Rawlings, and Robert Wilson of St. Louis and Mrs. Effie Benish of Little Rock, Ark. Fifteen grand children also survive: Ruth Janosek, Ray Hawkins, Alma and Olive Greig, Katherine Russell, and Donald Morrow, Robert and Dora Mae Rawlings, Martha Jane, John and Joe Wilson, Jackie, Mary Ellen, and Ruth Benish; and two great grandchildren: Jerry and James Janosek. She is also survived by 3 brothers: William, Marion, and Henry Grayson and a host of nieces and nephews. The funeral was held in Ambruster's Chapel on Manchester Avenue in St. Louis, Monday April 3rd. Rev. Forest Lowery of the Tower Grove Baptist Church spoke comforting words to the bereaved ones, after which she was laid to rest by the side of her husband, (who passed away on (sic) 11 years ago) in the beautiful Valhalla Cemetery, there to await the resurrection day. Pall bearers were six nephews: Frank, Ernest, and Walter Wilson, Charles Rowland, Ed and Elmer Grayson. The many floral offerings were beautiful and expressed the esteem in which she was held and the sympathy felt for the bereaved ones. THE ROLLA HERALD 20 April 1933
IDA M. LAUN
Mrs. Ida M. Laun, relict of the late F. C. (Fritz) Laun, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. E. Miller, of Chicago, Ill., Wednesday, May 17, 1933. She was 67 years old. She was an excellent woman and had many friends. Mrs. Laun is survived by three children, George Laun, St. James, MO., A. C. Laun, St Louis, and Mrs. Miller of Chicago. Her remains were brought to St. James, Mo., where interment took place last Saturday.
MARY L. YOWELL
Mrs. Mary L. Yowell, relict of the late J. E. Yowell, passed away at Rolla hospital last Friday morning, May 19th, 1933. She was in the 76th year of her age. The deceased was formerly Miss Mary L. Fink, of Elk Prairie in this county. She united in marriage with Mr. J. E. Yowell, Feb. 20, 1879. To this union, one daughter was born, Mrs. F. E. Denison of Rolla, who survives; also one granddaughter, Mrs. Burton Ballard, of Chicago, survives. Mr. & Mrs. Yowell spent the most of their lives at Edgar Springs, where they were loved, honored and respected. Her husband preceded her to the grave in July 1930. Mrs. Yowell was a devout member of the Baptist church. She was a good christian woman and her death is mourned by many friends. Funeral services were conducted by Elder W. L. Bradford of the Primitive Baptist church from the of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. & Mrs. F. E. Dension on 12th Street in this city last Sunday afternoon. A large number of friends were present to express their sympathy to the bereaved relatives. Interment took place at the Rolla cemetery. THE ROLLA HERALD 25 May 1933
J. W. CAMPBELL
J. W. Campbell died at his home at 4th and Main streets in Rolla Wednesday, May 17th, 1933. He was in the 61st year of his age. Mr. Campbell was born on a farm about four miles west of Rolla, March 17th, 1873. He lived all of his life in Phelps county. He was united in marriage with Miss Emma Queen and to this union two children were born. They are Mrs. N. B. Fore of Newburg and Columbus Campbell of Rolla. His wife died over thirty years ago. He later married Miss Margaret Howard. To this union five children were born, four of whom survive. They are Mrs. Ray Collier and James Campbell of St. Louis, Geo. Campbell, Rolla and Mrs. Grace Earne. In 1925 Mr. Campbell in marriage with Mrs Mary Collier of Rolla, who survives him. He is also survived by eitht step-children: Ray Collier of Rolla; Roy Collier of St. Louis; Mrs. H. O. Johnson of Flat Grove; Mrs. John Taylor of Venice, Ill.; Mrs. Will Wagner of Jerome, Mo.; Mrs. James Taylor, Rolla; Mrs. James Marcellus, Denver, Colo.; Chas. Collier of Rolla; and one adopted son, John Robert Campbell of Flat Grove. Mr. Campbell has been conducting a grocery store on Main street close to the bridge over the rail road for the past thirteen years...Rolla Christian Church Friday afternoon. CHESTER ORMSBY
Chester Bla_ch Ormsby was born March 8, 1916 at St. Louis, Mo. He departed this life May 16, 1933 at Newburg, Mo., age 17 years, 2 months, and 8 days. He was converted at an early age and united with the Newburg Baptist Church of which he was a member at his death. He loved his Sunday School class of which he was president and was absent only once in the last two years. He always took an active part in discussion of the lesson. Chester was a member of this years graduating class of Newburg high school and was a brilliant pupil throughout his school career. He was a member of the tract team, which won honors for his school. He leaves to mourn his departure his parents, Mr. & Mrs. I. A. Ormsby and sister, Jean of Newburg, his grandmother, Mrs. Wright, of St. Louis and a large number of other relatives besides a host of friends... THE ROLLA HERALD 8 June 1933
MARTHA LANE
Mrs. Martha Ann Lane, formerly Miss Martha Ann Woolsey, was born in Pulaski county, KY, in February, 1833, and died at her home at Yancy Mills, June 11, 1933. When she was a child of 10 years, she came with her parents from Kentucky in an ox cart and settled in Phelps County. Her husband, James Lane, preceded her in death, having died in the year 1896. Three children have also preceded her in death, one having died in infancy; one daughter, Mary Jane King died March 23, 1914, and a son, George W. Lane died February 14, 1927. Mrs. Lane is survived by three grandchildren, James P. King, St. Louis; George M. King, Yancy Mills; and Mrs. Pearl Black, Yancy Mills, twelve great grandchildren, George Black, Ralph Black, Walter Black, Ruby Black, Fay King, Eileen King, Locs King, Elvie King, Oscar King, Cecil King, Dorothy King, and Ethel King. She is survived by one brother, whose home is in Texas. Mrs. Mrs. Mary Brown, her companion for many many years was with Mrs. Lane at the time of her death. Funeral services were concucted by the Rev. B. V. Bolton, pastor of the Rolla Baptist Church at the Beaver church. Burial was made at the Beaver Cemetery. THE ROLLA HERALD 15 June 1933
J. M. LENOX
Word was received by relatives in Phelps County Monday night that Hon. J. M. Lenox passed away at his home at Eram, Okla., that day, June 19th. Mr. Lenox was born and reared in Phelps County near Lake Spring. His father, David Lenox, was a pioneer Baptist preacher in this section, having headed a delegation from Kentucky and settled in this section of Missouri long before Phelps county was organized. In young manhood, Mr. Lenox always took an active interest in the political and business affairs of Phelps county. He was a prominent farmer and stockman. It is interesting to note that Mr. Lenox, Mr. E. C. Comstock and Mr. George Martin were founders of Lecoma, MO. The name was formed by taking the first two letters in each of the names of the founders. Mr. Lenox was was Moderator of the Primitative Baptist Association of Phelps and Dent counties, and altho he moved to Oklahoma, he was still retained as Moderator and one of his greatest pleasures was attending the Association meetings of the Baptist Church. About twenty-five years ago Mr. Lenox and his family moved to Eram, Oklahoma. In keeping with his disposition Mr. Lenox became active in the affairs of Oklahoma. He served one or two terms in the Oklahoma legislature and stood high as a representative citizen of the state of his adoption. For the past year he hasbeen in ill health and his death was not unexpected. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Miss Laura Lenox, Mrs Elmo Hendrickson, Mrs. Julius Morrison, Mrs. Mark Blake, and his sons, Wick, Walter, Phil, and John Lenox, all of whom live in Oklahoma. His is also survived by his nephews, H. W. Lenox, K. M. Lenox, of Lake Sprung, I. L. Lenox, of Rolla, and niece, Mrs. J. D. Sturgeon, of Hobson, Mo. Mr. K. M. Lenox and Mrs. Sturgeon attended the funeral at Eram, Okla., on Wednesday. Elder Walter Bradford of the Baptist Church of Phelps County, went to Eram, and conducted the burial service. He was accompanied on the trip by Mrs. Bradford...
MISS DORA STONE
Miss Dora Stone died at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. & Mrs. Chas. C. Stewart, in St. Louis, Monday, June 19th, 1933. She was sixty-two years old. Her remains were brought to Rolla Wednesday. Funeral services were conducted at the McCaw Funeral Chapel Wednesday afternoon by Rev. E. P. Gabriel, of Rolla Christian Church. Interment took place at Rolla cemetery. She is survived by her brother, Will Stone, of Rolla, and her sisters, Mrs. Stewart of St. Louis and Mrs. George Thompson, of Oklahoma.
JOHN L. LEE
John L.Lee passed away at his home about four miles north of Rolla, Wednesday, June 14th, 1933. He was in the 59th year of hisn age. John Louis Lee was born in this county, September 6th, 1875. He grew into manhood here and united in marriage with Miss Leoma Melton. To this union four children were born. They are Mr. W. H. Keller, Mrs. Ernest Ballance, Miss Ida Lee, and Robert Lee, who with their mother survive. Also two grandchildren survive: Alice Virginia Ballance, and John Lee Keller. Mr. Lee was a highly respected man in this county. He was honest and a good neighbor. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. V. NANCY MCKINNON
Mrs. Nancy Ellen McKinnon, wife of Floyd McKinnon, of near Waynesville, Mo., died at the Rolla hospital, last Saturday, June 17th. She was 27 years, 5 months, and 17 days old, having been born December 30, 1905, and was the daughter of Richard Wade and wife. Interment took place at Gospel Ridge Cemetery. MR. K. O. UNDERWOOD
Mr. K. O. Underwood passed away at his home in Rolla Monday morning, June 26, 1933. A little over two weeks ago he underwent an operation for cancer. Serious as it was he was thought to be recovering. He was in the 76th year of his age. Kursey Oscar Underwood was born at East Palestine, Ohio, October 31st, 1856. He grew to manhood there. In 1884 he came to Phelps county and followed the saw mill business. He afterwards took up the well drilling business, and there are deep well all over this section of the state that he drilled. On October 13th, 1887 Mr. Underwood united in marriage with Miss Laura Baringer of Macedonia, MO., north of Rolla. To this union seven children were born, five of whom with their mother survive. They are: Millard Underwood, of Richmond, Virginia; Clifford Underwood, St. Louis, MO.; Mrs. Geo. A. Blake, Edgerton, Wyoming; Mrs. R. G. Knickerbocker and Mrs. Monte Ledford of Payson, Arizona. Also five grandchildren and two brothers, Seth Underwood of near Rolla and Lot Underwood, Spokane, Washington. The daughters have been in Rolla until recently. Besides the local relatives, the two sons, Millard and Clifford Underwood, wife and son,Clifford, his daughter, Mrs. R. G. Knickerbocker and granddaughter, Miss Margaret Clark and grandson, Donald Clark of Edgerton, Wyoming are here to attend the funeral. Mr. Underwood was a good, honest, hardworking man and many friends sympathize with the family in their bereavement. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. O. V. Jackson in Christ Church (Espiscopal) Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Burial will be at the Macedonia cemetery. The body will lie in state in the chapel of Christ Church between 2 and 3 o'clock to be viewed by friends and family. THE ROLLA HERALD 29 June 1933
MRS. JESSIE HERBERT SHEFFALD
The remains of Mrs. Jessie Herbert Sheffald of St. Louis, were brought here for burial Saturday. They were taken to the home of her Aunt, Mrs. Charlie Fulton until 2 o'clock, when they were taken to the Baptist Church for funeral services, which were conducted by the Tower Grove Baptist minister. She was a Sunday School teacher in the Tower Grove Baptist Church. The minister gave a very conforting tribute to the large assembly of grief stricken relatives and friends. Mrs. Sheffald was born in Phelps, County and lived here until her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Herbert moved to St. Louis a few years ago. Funeral services were held to an overflowing church at Tower Grove Friday. Mrs. Sheffald was 21 years old. She leaves a husband, parents, sister, grandparents, many relatives and friends to mourn her death. Many friends accompanied them to Newburg for the burial, which took place at the Roach cemetery. Many beautiful floral offerings were in evidence of the high esteem in which she was held. The bereaved have the sympathy of the community. Mr. & Mrs. Oscar Williams and daughter of St. Louis, accompanied the funeral concourse here. THE ROLLA HERALD 13 July 1933
