Monroe County Churches & Religion

Tulip Christian

The church was organized as a Union church and housed a tiny congregation of about 20 members. There were three church groups represented, Christian, Methodist and Cumberland Presbyterians.

The first pastor of the new church was Elder James Ferguson. Charter members of the church were Dr. and Mrs. E. W. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Conley and Mr. and Mrs. T. T. Barnes.

In the early days of the church each denomination was responsible for the preaching service on Sunday during the month and there was a Union Sunday School. An organ was the early musical instrument and there was an organist for each group.

The Presbyterians and the Methodist members discontinued their services in the 1900’s and the church has been called the Tulip Christian Church since that time.

In the beginning kerosene lamps were used to light the church. Later an acetylene lighting system was installed then gasoline lamps were used. On December 18, 1938, the church membership voted for rural electrification, thus the church became energized in December 1939. The church has undergone remodeling many times and is at present a lovely modern building where faithful members gather for worship service and community affairs.
