We have a changing history exhibit in the court house, on the middle floor of the court house, which may be viewed M-F from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The present exhibit is now a display of toys for Christmas in times past. Some of the items in it are a china-headed doll in a handmade, wooden doll cradle with a piece of blue and white counterpoint under the doll, a Shirley Temple cardboard doll with paper clothes, an iron ice wagon pulled by a horse, a wooden clown crayon and pencil box, small wooden furniture from the Depression period, a china tea set and a number of other toys. The toys are sitting on cloths with a Christmas motif. The case itself was ordered about 1895 by Dr. Fullerton of Princeton for his pharmacy. The case in its original wooden shipping case was given to our society a few years ago, never having been out of the shipping case.

The fund was started with profits from M.C. Historical & Genealogy Society history book sales, and has had some donations added to it. Any new donations would certainly be appreciated. The Cemetery Fund is a separate bank account handled by the Gen. & Hist. Soc. so any donations should be sent to PO Box 97, Princeton MO 64673 and marked cemetery fund or for a specific cemetery.
Anyone wanting more information can write to PO Box 97, Princeton MO 64673, or email the Soc. members listed on the MCGHS page.

The Mercer County Genealogical & Historical Society and the Cornelia Beekman Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution have combined forces with the intent to publish a new cemetery book of Mercer County, Missouri. Past member of both societies, Delores Rowland, spent over five years collecting information, obituaries, Bible records, death records, and other sources of information to upgrade the 1986 cemetery book of Joe Dale Linn. She used her personal computer to amass all the facts she had collected, and spent many tedious hours plugging in the information. It was her desire that the society should have a new cemetery book, as we are going on 25 years, since the Linn book was published. As in any publication, mistakes are made. So our challenge is to have the most accurate cemetery book available for Mercer County.
When the cemeteries were originally walked and stones were recorded, several things became apparent: what about those people who had no stone - an unmarked grave, or had died outside of the county and no records were given to newspaper publications inside of Mercer County, or the actual cemetery records were not complete.
We are asking for help on this project. It has been decided that the cemeteries should be walked again, stones reread, and hopefully, additional information given for a more complete tally of each cemetery. It is imperative that we find at least two volunteers to walk each Mercer County cemetery, to make certain the information we have amassed is correct, as recorded, and no one has been left out. When a cemetery has a board or caretaker, who have records of burials, would you please come forward with those records? Family members can be a tremendous help in making certain their people are recorded correctly. If you would like to help us with this project, please contact Randi Ferguson, windsong@grm.net; or Jennie Vertrees, backwood@grm.net.
Volumes I & II -- $100.00 ppd
Several volumes of Mercer Co. [MO] Marriage Books have been combined
into one volume containing an index with more than 5,000 marriages
which were recorded in this county from early 1898 through March 1932.
The new volume consists of 101 pages each of listings alphabetized by grooms and
also by brides with date and book/page. This results in a
spiral bound book of over 200 pages [over 100 pages printed on both
sides].
Book A:
Re-registration of approximately 120 marriages that occurred before the
Courthouse Fire of 1898
Book G:
Approximately 1,225 marriage records from January 1898 - January 1906
which were printed in Newsletters from January 1984 through April 1987
Book H:
Approximately 1,260 marriage records from January 1906 - February 1915
which were printed in Newsletters from June 1987 through June 1991
Book I:
Approximately 1, 250 marriage records from March 1915 - June 1924 which
were printed in Newsletters from June 1991 through October 1996
Book J:
Approximately 1, 175 marriage records from January 1924 - March 1932
which were printed in Newsletters from June 1991 through June 1997
This information was hand copied from the original handwritten records and typed for use in the newsletters. It has been retyped from the newsletters. When you allow for phonetic spelling in the old records, it is easy to account for variations and/or errors in names. The Marriage Book letter and page number are given for each marriage so that you can check entries against the original records at the County Courthouse. The original record usually includes ages, places of residence, and, in the case of minors, names of parents.
NOTE: Books K [March 1932], L [May 1938], M [August 1941], and N [October 1942] are currently being printed in the Newsletters.
