Palmyra
Lodge No. 18, A. F. and A. M., is one of the oldest lodges in the
State of Missouri. It was instituted in the year 1831, and the
dispensation and charter were issued in April of that year. Some
of the charter members were Epaphroditus Cossitt, G. W. Lane,
Stanton Buckner, and Stephen W. B. Carnegy. The first officers
were Epaphroditus Cossitt, W. M.; G. W. Lane, S. W.; Stephen W. B.
Carnegy, J. W.; Stanton Bucker, S. D.; Edward Searcy, J. D.; W. H.
Means, treasurer; Nic. Wernick, secretary; ___ Cald well, tyler.
The lodge now meets in a fine large brick hall, which was built in
1866, at a cost of $7,000. This lodge was represented in the Grand
Lodge of the State, April 2, 1832, by S. W. B. Carnegy; November
13, 1834, by Benjamin H. Means, Stanton Buckner, S. W. B. Carnegy
and Obediah Johnson; October 3, 1836, by Edward Searcy, R. H.
Pulliam, and S. W. B. Carnegy, at which session S. W. B. Carnegy
was elected Grand Master, ontinuing in office until October 8,
1839; in 1839, by W. D. Marmaduke; 1840 by JamesEagan, and S. W.
B. Carnegy. Thomas. L. Anderson, Winder C. Dingle, F. A.
Hanley and Jacob Sosey, have been members of this lodge for
over 40 years. S.W. B. Carnegy is now living in Canton, Missouri.
The present membership is 65.
