Republican Voters

in Marion County, 1889

Hannibal Daily Courier, Dec. 30, 1889

Twenty nine years ago the Daily Evening News of this city, published the following list of men who voted the Republican ticket in Marion county. That it was considered a disreputable thing to do is shown by the fact that the editor of the press in his explanation endeavors to spot the voters and indicate the degree of disgrace attached to them. Happily quite a number of them have out-lived the Evening News and are respected citizens of the county. Following is the list of the names of the men who voted for Lincoln in the city and county. We have classified them under three different heads. All those marked with * we consider respectable and law-abiding citizens who would not be guilty of doing anything unbecoming gentlemen and law-abiding citizens, Those marked with I are considered Abolitionists in the true sense of the word. Those not marked are persons generally unknown.
