County seat: Fredericktown

Madison County, Missouri was formed in 1818 from Cape Girardeau and St. Genevieve Counties. Birth records are available from 1883-1900. Marriage records are on file from 1821 and death records from 1883-1900. Land records from 1819 exist. Probate records exist from 1821 and court records are on file in the county courthouse since 1827.

A widely accepted theory is that Fredericktown, the county seat of Madison County, was named for Captain George Frederick Bollinger, a young active pioneer and statesmen of the time.

The Village of St. Michael, which later became Fredericktown, was settled in 1799 by French settlers exploring the lead mines of Mine La Motte, four miles north of Fredericktown.

Madison County is surrounded by the counties of Wayne, Iron, St. Francois, Perry, and Bollinger.
