LANAM; PIERCE; et, VANBIBBER/VANBEBBER

I
am the daughter of Patricia Irene Lanam, granddaughter of George Lanam and
great-great granddaughter of David Pierce. David Pierce married Emily Ann
VanBebber/VanBibber daughter of Vardaman VanBebber/VanBibber my 3rd
great-grandfather. I am a member of the
Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War in the Cornelia Hancock Tent and I
joined on Vardaman VanBebber. I also joined the DAR on the
great-grandfather of Vardaman VanBebber who was Peter VanBebber, II.
Peter VanBebber II is my 6th great-grandfather.
While
on a trip in 1949 my grandparents, George and Alma Lanam, drove through Purdin,
Linn, Missouri. They took the picture of the David and Emily A. Pierce
headstone in the Pierce Family Cemetery. George McClain Lanam lived with his
grandfather after the death of his mother, Gertrude Pierce Lanam. The pictures
of Vardaman Brady Pierce came from my cousin who also researches. Vardaman
Pierce was the son of David C. Pierce and was my g-g- Uncle.
David
C. Pierce fought in the Civil War. I have a copy of David Pierce’s
brother’s (Benjamin Franklin Pierce) military records. In those records there
is a letter from his mother, Talitha Pierce, stating that her son, David, was
serving in the 1st Regiment Cavalry Missouri State Militia. I
have a copy of David C. Pierce’s military record where he had enlisted a second
time on January 25, 1864 in the 12th regiment of the Missouri Cavalry. It
also states that he last served in Co. F. 1st Regiment of M. S. M.
(Missouri State Militia) and that he was discharged in February, 1863 from that
unit. This confirms the statement in Benjamin’s military record regarding
David. If David requested a pension I
have not found those records.

can also find David Pierce in "The History of Linn County, Missouri"
Kansas City, Mo: Birdsall & Dean 1882 on page 362 where it is recorded,
“Federal or Union soldiers' record - Company F, Twenty-Third Missouri infantry
- original organization, Eighth corporal, David C. Pierce. He enlisted at
Linneus, MO. August 26, 1861.
David
C. Pierce’s father in law, Vardaman VanBibber, (they have him listed as
Vordman) was in Company F, 23rd Regiment along with Vardaman’s brother, James
H. VanBibber as well as David C. Pierce’s brother Benjamin F. Pierce. I
have Vardaman’s Civil War pension records and Benjamin F. Pierce’s records.

Vardaman VanBebber has
a wonderful family history. He comes from a family that arrived in
America on the Concord in 1687 at the invitation of William Penn.
Vardaman'’s father, Jacob, fought in the War of 1812 and he has two
great-grandfathers that fought in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Point
Pleasant, Mason Co., Virginia. Vardaman is the grand nephew of Olive VanBibber
who married Nathan Boone, son of the famous Daniel Boone. Vardaman was born
1825 in Tennessee and you can find his father Jacob living in Claiborne in the
1830 census and in Meigs,Tennessee in the 1840 census records. Between 1840
and 1845 the family had migrated to Missouri as Vardaman and Elenor were
married April 2, 1845 in Linn Co., Missouri. Vardaman and Elenor/Ellen had nine
children, Henry Grey born 1846, Emily Ann born 1850, George Elison born 1852,
Lucy Jane born 1853, Nancy Elizabeth born 1857, Martha born 1859, Catherine
“Kitty” born 1861, William “Sherman” born 1866 and Melcina“Nellie” born
1867. According to Vardaman’s pension records he fought in the Civil War
for the state of Missouri in the infantry - Company F, 23rd Regiment as a
private. He enlisted on December 29, 1861 in Linn County, Missouri and
was discharged December 30, 1864 from Savannah, Georgia. He was captured at
Shiloh, Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee on April 6, 1862. As history has
reported the Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest conflict the nation had
seen. Vardaman was in the prisons in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery,
Alabama. He contracted typhoid fever and the measles during the war which
affected his lungs and he suffered for the rest of his life with medical
problems as a result. Prior to the Civil War he was a farmer and after
the war he returned to Linn County, Missouri where he returned to farming to
provide for his family. Vardaman is buried with his wife, Elenor/Ellen/Ellender Frances Dodson in the Pierce Family
Cemetery.
