Captain John Smith one of the soldiers at Jamestown Virigina used a
Wicocomico as his guide circa 1608.
"John Smith conducted two major voyages around the Chesapeake Bay
during the summer of 1608, both starting from Jamestown and heading
down the James River into the Bay."
National Park Service; John Smith Historic Trail Study
"At some point early in his journey up the Potomac, Smith met a
Wicocomoco man named Mosco, who had an unusually heavy beard that
suggested some European ancestry via earlier explorers. "
National Park Service Historical Narrative
"Our old friend Mosco, a lusty Salvage of Wighcocomoco upon the
river
of Patawomek, we supposed him some French mans sonne, because he had a
thicke blacke bush beard, and the Salvages seldome have any at all, of
which he was not a little proud, to see so many of his Countrymen."
