The Melton's
The early Melton family were originally of Viking origin. They
landed in the Northern part of the British Isles, in around 870 A. D.,
under King Strigud the Stout. Duke William, who invaded and
defeated England in 1066, was descended from the first Duke Rollo of
Normandy.
The following 25 generations were taken from several places. Most
of the 25 generations came from two books written by Michael (Melton)
Leisure. ([email protected])
I have only proved the first seven (7) generations, with census, wills,
deeds, court records, birth and death certificates.
We have proof through John J. Melton, born in 1740 in Albemarle County,
Virginia. We are working on his father, John. I would like to
thank Holly Cochran for finding Pierce Wade Melton Jr. Please see the

out by Archives, Inc. See notes below pictures. Michael Leisure has her
birth in 1324, in his book. She was married to Robert Conyers.
That is in both records. John had a brother named William Melton)

My father, tested through ftDNA and you are a match at the 37
marker with a genetic distance of 3. You are the closest match that
he has at this time. There are no exact matches.
My sister and I traced our ancestry back to a Jesse Melton who came from
VA around 1790 to Anson Co, NC. We have paper proof back that
far.Another researcher has Jesse all the way back to England to a
brother of John Milton's father. (Sometime after coming to America,
Milton
became Melton.) This researcher did not offer proof.
Would
you be kind enough to share your pedigree?
Thank you.

Dear Linda
Good afternoon. Thank you for your note. You've taught me
something new; I
didn't know about the spelling "Melton" (not that they worried
about
spellin' in them thar days! The "Lost Colony" project
also notes "Mylton"!
Yes, I may be able to help you. I have traced ancestors back to John
Milton
who married Emma tanner on 24 August 1762 at Atherington Church.
We may be
able to go back a little further but the John Milton noted could be one
of
two, I seem to recall, so any trace from another quarter could be very
helpful!
The "Lost Colony" project is worth researching although, of
course, this
goes back a couple of centuries but could be very interesting!
I hope this is helpful to you; my websites have pictures - you'll have
to
reciprocate to see if there's any physical resemblance!
All best wishes

Hi
Phillip,
Thanks
for your reply. I did not know of the Lost Colony project nor of the
"Mylton" spelling either.
The
book we tapped into traces our Jesse Melton back as follows: (I've taken
this directly from our book.)
Richard
Milton b. Cir. 1536 in Stanton-Saint John, England. Died CIr. 1601in
Stanton-Saint John, England.
Thomas
Milton b. Cir. 1570
Richard
Milton b. Cir. 1595 and died CIr. 1690-came to VA in 1620 on the ship
"Supply."
The
"Supply" was the companion ship to the "Mayflower."
Leaving three weeks later, the "Supply" under the command
of William Tracy, found its way to VA. The "Supply" was sent
by John Smyth of Nibley, steward of Berkeley, co-founder the Berkeley
Company of VA (sent from Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England.)
Richard must have been considered a responsible man bec. he was put in
charge of Councillor Prontus's cattle while in shipment on the
"Supply." Richard was a bond or indentured servant. Indentured
servants were not slaves. They entered into a contract to work for a
specified period of time usu. to pay for their passage. At the
expiration of their terms, there were no barriers to their advancement.
Richard was still listed on records as a 'servant" in June 1622.
His name is not on the list in Jan. 1625. Richard Milton later purchased
75 acres of land from Thomas Staff on Nov. 29, 1635. On Oct. 3, 1638 he
received 400 acres from a transfer by 8 others. On Aug. 23, 1643, Thomas
Wheeler received by assignment from Richard Milton and Robert Tisdale
900 acres.

Jesse
Melton born cir.. 1772 and died Sept 1833. ( From Jesse forward, we have
proof. The researcher who did the research prior to our Jesse did not
offer proof. That does not mean he was in error, but could have been. I
do know for a fact that our Jesse came from VA.)

grandfather Britain Belk was mortally wounded at the "Battle of the
Waxhaws" better known as "Buford's Massacre," a

I
would be happy to mail a copy of our book to you, gratis. The book
contains many family photos and you can judge the resemblance for
yourself but I see a resemblance.
It
looks like your earliest known ancestor, John, was born after our
Richard came to America in 1620. I'm just going by his marriage date and
assuming he married as a young man. Our connection would then have to be
further back. Maybe the info. I'm sending will help. The researcher who
traced this line back to England was highly regarded in SC so the fact
that he did not provide proof does not mean that he did not have it.
Best
wishes on your run for Parliament. My father, now 86 and in very poor
health, will be very happy to know that distant relatives in
England are of a conservative political persuasion. I am the only
liberal in my entire family.
If
you'd like the book, please send me your mailing address.
Best,
Linda
