Genealogy Report

Mathew Gibbs, b.c. 1615 in Kent County, England, died Middlesex Co, Mass

1.  Your kit number 86899

2.  Your name Living

3.  Why did you join the Lost Colony project? I am fascinated with the very early history, of the development of the colonies and the people involved.  There was suppose to be a John Gibbes, assumed to be from County Kent, England in this Lost Colony. There were very early Gibbes/Gibbs from County Kent, England who settled in Barbados, Virginia, and the Carolina’s and in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  I am a 10th generation American, a descendant of an assumed County Kent, England, immigrant Mathew Gibbs.

4.  How is your Y-line DNA line connected to the colonists, the surnames, Native people or the location? The “Gibbs” name has been crossed to both native people (as in John Gibbs of Nantucket Island) and to imported African American slaves.

The 3 sections of the website are divided into genealogy, research and history.

Genealogy – typically this would be the specific genealogy of the line listed here on the site….so the mtdna for you.

I am including a mini-genealogy form below for you to complete which should help you to document your maternal ancestry.  Alternatively, you can upload a gedcom to either your personal results page at Family Tree DNA or mitosearch and let us know that you have done so.

5.  Please provide a brief writeup (2 paragraphs to one page in length) on your line!  My “GIBBS” Surname line first appears in the Massachusetts Bay Colony sometime between 1629 and 1638, supposedly aboard the vessel the Lions Whelp.  Mathew Gibbs, was a Planter in Charlestown, MA – and sold these land in 1654; which is the first official record of him being in the colony. He had to be a very early settler, because his name does no appear between 1634-1650 for purchasing the lands, he sold.  Mathew fought in the King Philip’s War. Mathew’s last son John Gibbs; relocated for Sudbury, MA to Hopkinton. John Gibbs first Son Thomas, helped resettle Brookfield, MA and was awarded lands in the Quabin Plantation (Narragansett #4).  Thomas Gibbs first son, Abraham was about 15 years old when they started the migration from Brookfield to Quabin.  Abraham, met and married one Keziah Atwood. It was assumed that this couple were the parents to my Great, Great, Great-grandfather Joshua. Joshua Gibbs at 16 years old, was a patriot in the First New Hampshire Regiment of 1776.  He was listed as one of the British prisoners released to Benedict Arnold, on his acceptance of a Cartel for Exchange… Joshua Gibbs married Anna, and over a 27 year period had 12 children, my Great, great-grandfather Solomon was the last child born, in Canada in 1812.  Solomon’s journeys started as a very young child. They relocated back into the states on account of the War or 1812, and by 1817 Joshua and Anna had finally settled in Toby township, Armstrong Co., PA.  Solomon and Rebecca (Gibson) Gibbs relocated to Wayne Co., Iowa. My Great-grandfather Milton Cameron Gibbs continued West, settling in Laramie, Wyoming;  which is where I was born in Dec 1956.

7.  Do you have a family website that includes this line?  If so, please provide the link.  No.  I have worked very hard to keep this within the family and not out in the public where it can be copied.

Research – this would include such items as papers you’ve written about the family, deeds you’ve extracted, or other things relevant to your particular line.

8.  Do you have research items to contribute?  If so, paste here or send separately. I will consider this,  if we find a link between my Gibbs Line and the assumed John Gibbs of the Lost Colony.

History – this would include any general history of the area or a tribe or something not included above.

9.  Do you have history to share?  If so, paste here or send separately.

No. All the “history” is about events in New England and the Rev. War.

10.  Are you willing to have your e-mail address and first name listed as a contact for your kit?  If so, what is the e-mail you want listed?  Yes

11.  Are you willing to be a coordinator or resource for any of the Lost Colony surnames?  If so, which ones?  Yes, Gibbs.

We are working to be sure that everyone who should be included in the Lost Colony, is in fact included, and that folks who don’t have a potential link to the colonists have the opportunity to join a project more suited to their needs.

If possible, please reply within the next week or so.

Thank you very much,

Roberta Estes

Lost Colony Project Volunteer Administrator
