3.
Why did you join the Lost Colony project?
There
is a possibility that our family could have come from the coastal area
of North Carolina and Brown/Browne are names that you have listed as
settlers. The earliest we have traced our family is to the far western
part of NC in what is now Haywood County – was formerly Indian Lands
and then Buncombe County.
4.
How is your Y-line DNA line connected to the colonists, the
surnames, Native people or the location?
1.
By surname. 2. Location. 3.
Our tradition has always said that there is Indian (Cherokee) blood in
the family. We just found,
several days ago, that the name of William Hamilton Brown, grandson of
our patriarch, David Brown, was on the Guion Miller Application roll.
The records have been ordered from the National Archives (NARA) but will
take upwards of 6 or 8 weeks to be mailed to us.
Hopefully this is the correct person and that some useful
information is there.
The
3 sections of the website are divided into genealogy, research and
history.
Genealogy
– typically this would be the specific genealogy of the line listed
here on the site….so the mtdna for you.
I
am including a mini-genealogy form below for you to complete which
should help you to document your maternal ancestry.
Alternatively, you can upload a gedcom to either your personal
results page at Family Tree DNA or mitosearch and let us know that you
have done so.
5.
Please provide a brief writeup (2 paragraphs to one page in
length) on your line!
See
the following website for a descendancy report on our Brown family:
http://users.bscn.com/~harryv/brown1.htm
This
should give you what you need but I can send a more complete GEDCOM file
if that is necessary.
David
Brown, the patriarch of our family, was born ca. 1795 in western NC,
probably in Indian territory which is now Haywood County, NC.
He married Rhoda Chastain in about 1826. She was no doubt born in
the Old Pendleton District of SC, not far from the Browns in NC. Their
first three children were born in NC.
They moved to Georgia in 1833 and settled in Union County (1840
census). They were in
Cherokee County, GA, in the 1850 census.
Their remaining eight children were born in GA.
Rhoda
died shortly after the 1850 census was taken.
The family moved to Murray County, GA, for several years before
moving to Arkansas. While
in Murray County, David, remarried to Catherine Sullivan, widow of John
Martin. They had a son, George C. Brown.
The
family, less one daughter who married and remainded in GA, moved to
Poinsett County, AR, in 1858. David
died there about a year later. That part of Poinsett County is now
Jonesboro, Craighead County, AR.
