Letter to Bernice Brooks, Rt. 2, Newport, Tennessee from Pearl Brooks Hill. Evidently Bernice had written to her cousin seeking information about the Brookses. Pearl’s mother, Matilda Taylor Brooks (1859-1950) was living with her at the time and would have been 82 years old.

I think this letter raises some questions about Rachel Brooks’s being a Henry. Matilda states that she does not know Rachel’s maiden name., Yet Bernice always said I think she was a ‘Henry’. Could Bernice have confused the daughter who married a Henry with Rachel’s maiden name. In the 1900 Cocke Co Census Leonard Henry and Alice Henry, ages 19 and 20, were listed as cousins to Joel A. Brooks (son of David D.). On the back of a picture of them, Bernice wrote “I think their mother was Joel’s first cousin.”

Matilda names three brothers and one half brother of David’s and refers to two sisters, yet I only show one sister, Mary.

Double brackets are my notations. The writer of the letter also used brackets Garry Brooks 6-1-2008

Dear Bernice,
Mama says Grandmother Brooks ((Nancy)) told her that Grandpa ((David D. Brooks)) was sent out by the Union Army (documented as Confederate) as a recruiting officer. Had tried to get back to his command but was cut off. He came by home had them cook some food for him and was ready to start back when the rebels ((bushwhackers)) came dashing up. They caught Grandpa at the Murray pond and killed him. The old house in which they lived was about where Herbert had the Laundry. ((three miles east of Newport on Hwy US 25-70)) When Grandma applied for a pension Grandpa had been marked up as a deserter on account of having been cut off from his company too long. I doubt if Grandma knew how to go about getting the pension. ((She may have received a pension as she was listed as a widow in a Civil War Veterans book.)) You know Uncle David was born after Grandpa was killed.
Grandpa’s father came to Tennessee from S.C. Grandpa was one of the last children so were Cousin John’s father (Joel), Cousin Dan’s father (Bill), Cousin Joe’s father (Dan) and mama thinks there were two girls. One married a Henry, the other a Williams both lived in Sevier County. One of Grandpa’s half brothers ((Riley)) married a Huff. She died and he went to Georgia and married again.
There were two Wright Brooks, one was B.B’s ((Burrell)) grandfather and Oliver Gray’s great grandfather on his mother’s side. The other Wright Brooks was May Kennedy Sisks grandfather. This Wright Brooks was a brother to cousin Florence’s father (Young Brooks). And there was cousin Luke’s set, One eyed John Brooks (Rev Joe Brooks father), Mama doesn’t know just how much we are related to any in this paragraph.
Mama thinks Grandpa had some recruits to take back with him but doesn’t know who they were or whether they escaped or not.
Also I’ve heard that Grandpa’s mother ((Rachel)) was the one who was Irish. She, it seemed always had a ready answer. I don’t know what her maiden name. As to the Blanchard’s she doesn’t know of any family of the older ones except Grandma’s family. If Cousin Joel were living I am sure he would know all about them.
It seems that the Brooks & Blanchard’s are not among the counties oldest families
The Brooks seem ((to)) be prominent people in Charleston.
I wish we knew more but I don’t know how one could find anything more.
Write again. I was glad to get your letter. I still miss getting to see you often.
Love to all,
Pearl.

P.S. Mama says that May Mrs. Justus ((probably means May’s mother who was Margaret Brooks. May Justus was quite well-known as a children’s author in the 1940 and 1950’s children)) or Aunt Harriett Blanchard would remember more than she can.

We’d be glad to have all of you come to see us any time you can.

The First Annual Brooks Reunion of William & Rachel Brooks was held September 14, 1986 in the city park in Newport, TN. Around 125 descendants attended. It was organized by Anna Laura Brooks Thornton and Irene Brooks Miller, Anna's daughter, Dorothy Ann Thornton Ellis, and a cousin, Galdys Wild Copp.
It is always the 2nd Sunday in the park. Each year Doris Wild Parks and Audrey Wild Weeks, sisters of Gladys, join Gladys and Irene in planning and carrying out the annual event.

In the 1860 Cocke County Tenn. Census for the County Seat of Newport there are 8 Brooks households:

James Brooks
Wright Brooks
William R. Brooks
Royal Brooks
P.M. Brooks
Joel Brooks
William Brooks
Young E. Brooks

As of the start of this research, I have been able to connect all these Brooks to the William Brooks family based on Laura's research except for William R. and P.M. Brooks.

Notes for SARAH:
1860 Census Listed with children??

Johanna - I am a descendant of George Brooks, b. 1804 SC (according to the 1850 Cocke Co, TN census.) I am part of a Brooks DNA group on Yahoo and we are presently testing to see if we trace back to William Brooks, b. 1781 NC(according to the 1850 Cocke Co, TN census). There are many interesting aspects of your post, but I am most interested in one; i.e., Sarah Black who William Brooks was supposed to have married. We have some suspicion that our William was married twice - first to Sarah and 2nd to Rachel. William Brooks is first found in TN in the 1830 census. This matches with the same timeline that George first appears in TN, too. I have a document for a land patent for George dated Feb. 1830. His oldest child listed in the 1850 census for Cocke Co, TN was Warren, b. 1832 TN. In this 1830 Cocke Co, TN census, living next door to William was his brother, Joel Brooks, and also, Reuben BLACK (actually there is an older Reuben Black and a younger one, also). In thinking that Sarah and William might have divorced and William remarried: Sarah Brooks, age 77 b. SC appears in the 1860 Cocke Co, TN census in the household of James N Brooks, 28, b. TN. Another older female, Judith Brooks, age 47 b. SC is also here. I believe this James may be the son OR the grandson of William Brooks b. 1781 NC. It's very difficult to tell since William's youngest son was James age 17, b. TN (according to the 1850 Cocke Co, TN census) Have you done any more research on Sarah Black Brooks, wife of William Brooks? I am very anxious to compare notes with you.

*************************************South Carolina Records*********************************

1768 and Before the only court held in South Carolina was in the City of Charleston. The State was divided into six districts-a court house was established at Ninety-Six, at Cambridge.

1775-1783 at the close of the Revolutionary War all the territory embraced in the present counties of Greenville, Anderson, Oconee and Pickens belonged to the Cherokee Indians, although embraced within the State lines.

John Hearst of the Long Canes
In the 1750’s, when the area was first settled, the Long Cane District of South Carolina was in Cherokee country. This became all too apparent when, in 1759, the small, non-Indian population of this and other backcountry settlements was forced to seek protection in the local forts due to the increasing hostility of the Cherokee Nation. Not all of them made it in time. On 1 February 1760, all the residents of the Long Cane settlement were descending toward Patterson’s bridge on their way to Augusta, a more settled and secure area of the country. While making camp for the night, they were attacked by a band of 100 Cherokee. Not having completed the protection of the camp, this group of 150-250 was unable to put up much of a defense and between 20 to 50 them lost their lives. For the next few years, the backcountry was left to the Indians.

In 1763, the Peace of Paris concluded the Seven Years War (French and Indian War) and the Indian hostilities in the American colonies subsided. By 1764, the backcountry of South Carolina had once again become peaceful and was attracting new settlers. One such group of immigrants arrived on 28 July of that year in New York. Dr. Thomas Clark, his entire Presbyterian congregation, and some of their neighbors had embarked at Newry, Ireland, 10 May 1764 on the John bound for America. After arriving, about half of the group went to settle in Stillwater, New York. The remainder made their way to the Long Cane District where they made up the nuclei of the Little Run, Long Cane, and Cedar Creek Associate Reformed Presbyterian Churches (ARPC).

One theory has John Hearst and family, who were originally from Scotland, coming to America with Dr. Clark and settling in the Long Cane area. His children were members of the ARPC as evidenced by the 1797 call, which contains the names of all his sons and presumably his daughters through their husbands. The origin of this theory is thought to be from John's granddaughter Mary and her husband Jacob Clark.

An alternative theory according to 'Early Settlers of Franklin County', compiled and edited by Ralph Gregory, was that the first American settler of this line was a John Hearst or Hurst who settled in the Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1680. The article further states that his son John moved to the Abbeville district of South Carolina in 1766. The Hursts of Virginia were from England

A third theory, which appears to be born out by the facts, has him coming to South Carolina from Ireland in late 1765 or early 1766. Both John and his son John appear in the Council Journal for 26 Oct 1766 under the surname Hearse on 26 October 1766. The entries indicates that they arrived during the Stamp Act protest (1 November 1765 to 6 May 1766).

The Long Cane area was originally part of Colleton and Granville Counties, which extended from one end of the state to the other. In 1769 the backcountry was reallocated into the 96th district. The district was further sub-divided in 1795 into the Abbeville, Edgefield, Newberry, Laurens and Spartanburg Districts. The Long Cane area was encompassed by Abbeville district. This district was finally divided into three counties: Abbeville, Greenwood, and McCormick. The Long Cane district extends through all three counties, but is primarily in the southern part of Abbeville County.

Check on Thomas Brooks living beside Haynie and the Evergreen Tract in Anderson county-Because William Hayne took the name of his friend, William Brooks when William Brooks was killed in the Civil War. William (Hayne) Brooks had 8 sons and gave them the name of Brooks. Six of those sons along with William (Hayne) Brooks are buried at Golden Groove Methodist Church in Liberty, SC. The name on William (Hayne) Brooks's Civil War Tombstone reads-William Hayne but all 6 sons have the name Brooks. The location of Golden Groove Meth. Church is close to the area where our Thomas Warren Brooks, Sr. and family moved about 1874 and remained. Who was the William Brooks whose name William Hayne took?
