The Allens were English. It has been said that they were Welsh, however, this has never been verified. When and where this branch of the Allens first came to the American Colonies, settled in North Carolina, later moving to South Carolina, has not yet been determined. The progenitor of the Allens who settled first in North Carolina and later in what is now Marion and Dillon Counties of South Carolina, was William Allen. Doris Dunn, ALLEN & ALLIED FAMILIES, pg. 1, claims he was born about 1748 and died before 1833. He may have died before 1830 as he did not appear in the census for that year. William married Anna ? and they had ten children. By June 5, 1770, he was already in South Carolina, for in that year he received a Royal Grant of 300 acres in Craven County on the fork of the Little Pee Dee River and Drowning Creek on Bear Swamp bounding on all sides by vacant land. Later he moved up

Notes for Shadrach Allen:
Shadrach Allen was born about 1790 and died probably before the 1830 census and he is not listed in the 1830 Marion County Census as head of a household. His estate was settled by Sept. 27, 1836. Apparently, both he
and his wife died young as Joseph Allen's first cousin William B. Allen (Rev. Billy) became his guardian. During the War of 1812, Shadrach Allen served as a private in a militia company at Georgetown SC commanded by Capt. Elisha Bethea. (Richard Roberts also was a private in this company ( Durwood T. Stokes, History of Dillon County SC 1978, p. 59

According to Doris Dunn, Allen and Allied Families, p.2, William (Reverend Billy) Allen migrated with four brothers, a sister and their families to Livingston Parish, LA in 1837. Rev Billy was a minister of the gospel with the Bethlehem Church there until Sept. 14, 1841, however; October 9, 1841, he organized and became minister of the Amite Baptist church in Livingston Parish. Other members of the Allen family mentioned in the articles of the constitution of the church were: Bennet, W., Lewis T, Rhoda, Mary, Elizabeth and clerk pro-tem, B.T. Allen.

Notes for Benjamin Franklin Allen:
Born June 10, 1867 at the farm home of his parents in Moody Township, Marion County, SC approximately two miles east of the present town of Latta on Highway 917. Frank Allen was the youngest child of Joseph W. Allen and
Elizabeth "Betty" Smith. He attended the Vidallia Academy, a one room school founded by Dr. F.M.
Monroe and H. W. Allen on the latter's farm near Latta, SC H. W. (Herod)
Allen was Frank's brother. Frank inherited the home place which had its disadvantages, particularly
since the land had already been heavily cultivated and the soil was depleted. Frank's major interest and aptitude was that of a cabinetmaker and carpenter rather than his inherited occupation as a farmer. Among other things, he
built the house still standing on the home place. Some of his grandchildren, including all of his eldest daughter, Mary Beulah, were born.
He was a friendly person, enjoying long walks with his favorite dog and visits with neighbors. He often assisted them with some of their building projects. During the agricultural crisis of the nineteen twenties he sold the farm and
he and his youngest child, Luther, were living with another son, Bruce, and his wife Pearl, on a farm owned by his brother-in-law, Bert Roberts, between Fork and Mullins, SC. Benjamin Franklin Allen died February 5, 1940 and was buried beside his wife, Betty, in the Allen Cemetery about 2 miles east of Latta SC on Hwy 917.
