place on Hatteras Island. A DVD of
the April 2010 dig on Hatteras was shared with the Society. Included were
interviews with Roberta Estes showing the types of artifacts found during
that particular dig and Anne Poole explaining native middens, their
content; and information on how the Indians would have used these items in
their daily lives. Jennifer distributed handouts which provided information on the Group‟s Mission and a list of surnames of interest. Also on the display table were copies of their newsletter, a January article appearing in The Scientist and conch shells found in one of the middens during the dig.
The
Scientist Magazine The
Scientist magazine prominently featured the work of the Lost Colony
Research Group in the January issue in an article titled "Lost Colony
DNA." You can see the entire article here, complete with photographs
of artifacts from archaeology digs sponsored by the Lost Colony Research

The article
discussed DNA testing and how we hope eventually to use a combination of
DNA, genealogy and historical research to solve the mystery of the Lost
Colonists. Other experts in various fields were interviewed as well,
including Ugo Perego at Sorenson Molecular Genealogical Foundation who
discussed what DNA can and cannot do, specifically that Yline and
mitochondrial DNA can pinpoint Native ethnicity, but can't really tell
when it was introduced into the line. Charles
Ewen, an anthropology professor at ECU discussed the possible scenarios
for what happened to the colonists and where they might have gone. We also took this opportunity with The Scientist magazine to introduce our new archaeology partner, Eastern Carolina University.

and the LCRG Collaboration The Lost Colony Research Group is very pleased to announce our new liaison with Eastern Carolina University and Dr. Charles Ewen. Dr. Ewen teaches archaeology and related subjects and manages the archaeology lab at ECU, having been involved there with various digs and preservation of artifacts for many years. In fact, he has visited our digs on Hatteras Island for the past two years, providing research support and assistance then and at other times as well.
One of the
challenges we have experienced on Hatteras Island, and in particular when
working with a university who had no facilities in the US, is the proper
cleaning, storage, preservation and identification of artifacts. It is
imperative that many of these items be treated professionally to arrest
corrosion and preserve them for current and future study. Our alliance
with ECU allows us to move forward with a partner who is very accessible,
unquestionably committed to North Carolina history, and who can provide a
world-class facility for the finds on Hatteras Island. We will be
moving forward with our new partner with our fourth archaeology dig later
in 2012. Welcome
