Where is 'Sollep'?
In
the Beechland article, in our November 2011 Newsletter, the following
entry was noted:
"In
the book Old Albemarle County North Carolina Perquimans
Precinct, Births, Marriages, Deaths & Flesh Marks 1659-1820 by
Weynette Parks Haun, we find the following:
Original
pg. 5 - Richard Elkes the son _ Roger Elkes & Jane his wife of the
County of Sollep [possibly Suffolk Co.?] in Ingland & Ann
Belliott the Daughter of John Beeliott & Bridgett his wife of North
hampton County in Virginia weare Maried by Mr: Wood in Accomock County in
Vergenia the 3d: of Aprill 1671"
One
of the things I love about this project is how willing people are to help
each other.
Andy
Powell read the newsletter and realized he might have a very interesting
piece of the English Elks family puzzle. Here's what Andy had to say:
"If
it helps researchers any, I can probably direct the English search for
‘Elks’ a little better…..
On
Page 57 you refer to ‘Sollep’ and that it may be a reference to the
County of Suffolk.
I
would offer to hypothesize that ‘Sollep’ is a corruption of
‘Salop’ which is the old English name for the county of Shropshire.
It
may be of interest to know that the Earl of Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury being
the Capital of Shropshire), had a ship, the ‘Talbot.’ This ship took part in Drakes raid on St Augustine, the very
same voyage which called by Roanoke to relieve Ralph Lane’s Military
Colony. At the time of the
Drake voyage its captain was a Captain Bailie.
At
the time the same ship took part in the battle against the Spanish Armada,
she was captained by a Henry White."
It's
odd how often these same colonist surnames resurface, again and again. Of course, we don't know that they are connected, but then
again, we certainly don't know that they aren't either.
