DUEL E. TURNER Duel Epley Turner of Holden, Missouri was born February 22, 1913 near Climax Springs, Missouri, the son of Theophilus Wilson and Edieth (Warren) Turner. He departed this life Friday, June 8, 2001 at his home in Holden at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 16 days. Duel was united in marriage to Lucy Marguerite Williams on April 12, 1937 at Warrensburg, Missouri and later to Sylvia Patterson on December 11, 1994 at Pleasant Hill, Missouri. Duel was self-employed as a carpenter until his retirement in 1988. He was a member of the Bannister Hollow Baptist Church, Climax Springs, Missouri. Duel had lived in the Quick City Community from 1942 until moving to Holden in 1994. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marguerite on May 30, 1993; two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Turner of the home; three daughters, Shirley Witherspoon and husband Norman and Judy Fitzgerel and husband Ray, all of Holden; and Linda DesCombes and husband, Fred, of Greenwood, MO; a step-son, Jerry D. McCaskill and wife Jean, Holde; five grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; one step-grandson; two step-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Services were held Tuesday, June 12 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, Missouri with Pastor David Cox officiating. Pall bearers were Bob Banes, Duel DesCombes, Eddie Griggs, Dennis McCaskill, Mike Smith and David Wright. Honorary bearers were Marvin Fisher, Jim Riffle, Clarence "Bus" Weatherford, Kenneth Marksberry, and Garnett Salmon. Interment was in Grant Cemetery near Creighton, Missouri. MICHAEL GEORGE GUINN Michael George Guinn, age 50, of Independence, Mo, passed away Saturday, June 9,2001, at his home in Independence. He was born May 24, 1951, the son of Elton and Violet Pearl (Price) Guinn. He graduated from Holden High School in 1969 and had lived in Independence for the past 18 years. Mr. Guinn was a carpenter and had worked for Fogel Anderssen in Kansas City, MO in commercial construction. He was also a U.S. Army Veteren of Vietnam. He is survived by three sons, Jamie Guinn, Mt. Vernon, MO; Chad Thompson, Sioux City, IA; and Andy Guinn, Bolivar, MO; one daughter, Tammy Miller, Storm Lake, IA; four brothers, Isaac H. Guinn, Kansas City, MO; Elton Guinn, Jr., Holden; Denver Guinn, Warrensburg; and Ted Guinn, Holden; four sisters, Becky Atkins, North Kansas City, MO; Debbie Barwick, Holden; Lori Higgins, Holden; and Margaret Wilson, Oak Grove; six grandchildren and good friend, Cheryl Thompson. He was preceded in death by one sister, Sandra. Cremation will be under the direction of Ben Cast and Son- Wood Funeral Home, Holden. Military honors will be presented at the graveside by American Legion post 90 and VFW 5844 at the Holden Cemetery. MARY LUCILLE MARTIN Mary Lucille Martin, 81, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital after a short illness. She was born in rural Clinton, MO, the daughter of Luther and Pearl Jenkins. She married W.E. (Gene) Martin on October 9, 1937. Mary and her husband were partners in farming the majority of their married life. She will be joining her parents, nine brothers and sisters, her husband, W.E. Martin, one son, Jerry Martin and grandson, Mark Martin, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Michael Martin and wife, Dawn, of Chilhowee; three daughters, Carolyn Bradbury and husband, James, Raytown, MO; Linda Honeycutt and husband, Bill, Harrisonville, MO; Sharon Schroer and husband, Virgil, Raytown, MO; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 9, at Consalus Chapel in Clinton. The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Burial was at Englewood Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimers' Association and may be left at the funeral home. WYMAN WINFIELD CARPENTER Wyman Winfield Carpenter, age 93, of Raytown, MO, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2001 at the Hidden Lakes Care Center in Raytown. He was born August 29, 1907, the son of George and Mabel (Flora) Carpenter. On November 18, 1925, he married Ethel Eugene Thomas in Harrisonville, MO. She preceded him in death October 28, 1998. Mr. Carpenter had lived in Gunn City, Kansas City and Independence areas most of his life. He had worked as a capenter for Ford Construction for 29 years. Following his retirement, he worked odd jobs for residential construction. He was an active and faithful member of the White Avenue United Methodist Church in Independence for 55 years, and was a member of the United Methodist Men's Group. He continued his strong work ethic with jobs such as building the ramp at the church and others, too many to mention. He will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. He is survived by one son, Don Carpenter, of Independence, MO; one daughter, Eleanor Steadman, of Independence, MO; three grandchildren, Shari Patchen, of Liberty, MO; Drew Steadman, Buckner, MO; and Mark Steadman, of Kansas City, MO; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 20, 2001, with the Reverends Bob Zaun and Alice Margerum officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Ben Cast and Son- Wood Funeral Home, Holden.
