Tent:

Don Bowman pointed out at our July meeting that this month is time for election of Camp Officers. The Camp is making progress. In order for it to become the best it can be, it needs the support of each and every member. Lets have the best turnout of the year.

The Bi-Laws of Col. James J. Searcy, Camp #1923 does not have a provision for a Nominating Committee so all nominations will be made from the floor.

As is normal, a nominee may decline a nomination if desired but it is difficult to do so if not present. Please don't misunderstand. This is certainly not a threat; just a simple fact.

The Following Offices and Duties are presently listed in the Camp By-Laws on pages 3 & 4. (Camp By-Laws)

Commander
1st LT. Commander
Adjutant & acting Treasurer
Chaplain *
Historian

* Needs to be corrected. A Sergeant at Arms and Color Guard Commander should be added. A proposed amendment to the Camp By-Laws will be presented prior to the election of Officers.

Neil Block sent a very interesting email (below) this week concerning Battle Ground Signs
Gents, The sign you see here will go on a 1/4" steel plate attached to a 2" x 8' pipe for a post. (painted black) Pipe will slide down over a steel fence post driven 4 + feet in the ground then filled with sack crete............putting 3 in Randolph County at least one in Macon, start making a list of spots on county & state roads..........sign is stainless steel, laser etched $80. The more you get the cheaper they are. I just can't take this sitting around, got to do something................Neil

Something new has been added to the 'Camp Information & Stuff' section of the Web Site. (Take a look)

Editor's
Notes:

Commitment----what does this mean? The act of pledging oneself to a cause, idea or organization. I am proud to be a member of our Camp! Our members reflect an awareness of the same ideals, ethics and political responsibility of our brave Confederate ancestors. We are not merely historians, although----it is important to be so. We understand that unless we commit to the ideal of historical accuracy as regards the War for Southern Independence, the present biased, distorted revisionist accounts of this War will stand unchallenged.

We have all chosen to align ourselves with the ideals, focus and purpose of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. We have chosen to give of ourselves, our time and energies to promote TRUTH in the present face of profound political adversity and historical distortions. We stand united in our goals and feel deeply the same fire in our collective gut that prompted our ancestors to leave home and family to fight for what was both right and just.

As we begin another year and head purposefully into the Sesquicentennial, let us do so with even firmer commitment and a resolve to do all we can for our Camp and for the Cause!!! DEO VINDICE, Mark

The
Lone Jack Battle
Reunion
Aug 14

Below is the information I have so far, will try to find out more. Sounds like we could get some more exposure and have some fun. I'm planning on it.

Neil Block Forward this email:
Subject: LONGEST CW REUNION IN US ??
BE A PART OF THE Oldest Civil War Reunion Commemoration in the US?

On Saturday, August 14th, 2010, we will once again honor those who fought and died at the Battle of Lone Jack, MO, August 16th, 1862. In 1867 the first reunion was held near the lone Blackjack Oak tree. Only during a few years of WWI and WWII were the commemorations missed. For the last 48 years we have continued this tradition and hope to do so as long as at least 3 or more people are willing to attend.

This year all Civil War soldiers, women, and children need to be ready at 9:45 a.m. for the short 10:00 a.m. parade. As soon as the participants have had a chance to cool down and rest we will immediately meet at the Cemetery for the Memorial, hoping to start at 11:00 a.m. Men bring your 3 banders and both coats. Find out why this battle deserves much more attention than it receives nationwide.

As soon as the Memorial is over we will start a series of skits on the stage. Elliott Scouts will be in charge but the Lone Jack Historical Society welcomes ALL men, women, and children dressed in period clothing to be apart of the skits. After lunch you may start to wander off but we would welcome any one willing to stay and speak to the public until 5:00 p.m. The Cemetery is located just south of the only Lone Jack exit off 50 Hwy.

Your Obedient Servant, 816-322-3736

Larry Yeatman sent this email about the event:

Hughes Camp is registered to have a booth at Lone Jack. Will have flags and books for sale. Feel free to bring a lawn chair and join us under our tent! We can split up any SCV recruiting leads we get into geographic areas. IE is someone is close to your camps town, we can throw them your way. I've met folks from all over the state at Lone Jack. But come on up, and we can spread the word and educate the public! Bring SCV applications or Camp brochures that you have! Larry Yeatman Adjutant Hughes Camp
