Looking for information on the family of Jonathan Gillett and Hannah
Schackleford who moved to the Boonslick country - probably in Howard
County - from Kentucky, probably by 1820. Their daughter Catherine
Gillett, who was my ancestor, was presumably born in Missouri. They moved
with the family of Henry Smith, also of Kentucky. Later both the Smith
family and some of the Gilletts went to Texas to obtain land grants in
Austin's Colony. Henry Smith became the first provisional governor of
Texas. Jonathan Gillett applied for a land grant and returned to Missouri
to get the rest of his family. However, he and Hannah both died before
they could return to Texas. I am looking for any descendants and records
that would tell why they died and where they are buried. There may have
been a married daughter who stayed in Missouri. Four children:
Samuel, Roswell, Catherine and Sarah claimed the land grant and stayed in
Texas. Sarah later married Henry Smith, after her twin sister Elizabeth,
who was his wife died in Texas. Henry had also been married to Harriet
Gillett, who died in 1820 in Missouri.GREEN...WOODS Paula Johnson Dec 16 1996
