CRAWLEY...CHAPPELL...MILLER
I have quite a story about a freed mulatto slave from Virginia who came to Missouri with the Crawleys/Chappells. Around 1820, Susannah Crawley and her son Jonathan Crawley moved from Virginia where Susannah was a common law wife of Benjamin Crawley from Virginia. He freed her and many other slaves. He died shortly before Susannah and Jonathan moved to Howard County. Susannah married Abner Chappell and after her son Jonathan committed suicide in 1832, she and Abner took over the care of at least two of Jonathan's children. Jonathan's wife died in 1829, I believe. Jonathan was a county court judge for a short period of time.1828 and 1829 and was apparently removed from the judge positiion after a short period of time. I would assume Susannah was very fair as she must have passed for white. I would like to know more about Jonathan's suicide and short judicial period and how it was ended. or any other facts that you might have regarding the Crawleys and the Chappells. Thank you so much.

STORRS...RIKER
I am researching the Storrs family. I have information from a Court deed, conveying property from the Grandfather - Ashael Storrs to his grandsons. This was as follows: L:420, Deed Book 1 Marion County, MIssouri - 6 December 1832 - John S. Storrs and wife, Laviny, of Royalton, Dan Storrs and wife, Betsy, of Marshfield, Constant W. Storrs and wife, Maria, of Montpelier, Reuben Storrs and wife, Catherine of Greenborough, Wiliam Storrs and wife, Lucretia, of Middlesex and Charles Storrs and wife Susan of Greensborouh, all of the state of Vermont, for $400, sold to Jere Kingsbury of Franklin, Howard County, lots, buildings and grocery in Franklin, lately owned by Asahel Storrs, deceased. Can you give me any history of this Grocery store which was in existance in 1832? I am actually researching RIKER whose mother's sister married a Cadwell. Since I am having a problem with getting the Riker Genealogy, I thought perhaps some of his relation could give a clue.

I am looking for information on a John FLEMING family who appears on the Howard County 1830 census. On the 1840 Boone County census, there is a Robert FLEMING and Jackson FLEMING who I believe are Johns son and grandson. Robert and Jackson were born in Kentucky and I think I have placed John in Fayette County, KY in 1810. Jackson married Elizabeth KUTON on 7 Nov 1839 in Howard County and they moved to Monroe County around 1850; they are both buried in Randolph County. BANES...BRATTAN...KELLY
My great grandmother is Eliza Ann Banes B: 1 Jan 1854 near Booneville, Howard, Missouri. She married George Washington BRATTEN 28 Aug 1880 in Clarksburg, Moniteau, Mo. I just recieved her death certificate with hope that it would tell me who her mother was and place of birth but all it had was that Eliza's mother's madien name was KELLY and Elwood BANES was her father. I'm trying to find her mother. All I know is that her mother was born in Missouri or possibly Indiana and her maiden name was Kelly. Eliza Ann died in Denver,Denver, Colorado and was buried in the Crown Hill Cemetery in California next to my great father George W BRATTEN. I found her on the 1860 census in Cooper county, Mo. at the age of 5. The rest of the children are her half sisters as Eliza's father, Thomas Elwood Banes married again to Martha Jane Day on 20 Aug 1857 in Cooper county, Mo. and buried in the Strickfaden Cemetery, Cooper county, Mo. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

LYNCH...CREWS
I'm searching for what happened to Nancy (Lynch) Crews. Her parents, Henry and Sarah Lynch, along with nearly all her siblings and their families moved to Howard county between 1824 and 2-4-1829 (date they joined the New Hope Baptist church), but I find no record of Nancy and her two very young (ages under 10) daughters, Emily and Malvina with any of the family in the 1830 census, or alone either. Nancy was a widow, her husband Anderson Crews died in Madison county, KY (where they were all from) sometime between March and 30 August 1824. Nancy could and probably did remarry. I can find no record yet of a remarriage or her death. Both her daughters married in Macon county in 1837 and 1840. Their husbands took care of Henry Lynch's probate, and Nancy isn't mentioned at all as an heir. Might anyone know of this family, most especially what happened to Nancy? Thanks in advance! Rita in Montana (descendant of Emily Crews Hardgrove)

HARMAN...HARMON...QUINLISK
My gg-grandfather Thomas HARMAN(sic)/HARMON is listed in the Sep 1870 census with his family on page #17, Richmond Twp. Also listed with his wife and children is (probably) a 22-year-old brother, farmhand Dave HARMAN(sic). By January 17, 1871, a David HARMON was dead and buried in the family plot in Middletown Cemetery, Ohio. His marker says he was age 24. Thomas HARMON & family had been in the Ohio census in 1860 and 1880. I believe this death may have caused the family to return to Ohio, and wonder if anyone has access to the newspapers in the Howard County, MO area from that era which may have reported the death. I'm interested in any information on this family, HARMAN/HARMON or his wife Ellen QUINLISK HARMON. Thank you.

CREWS...STEWART
I am interested in Wiley P. Crews (1850-1925) and his wife Mary Francis Stewart (1848-1916). They are buried in Harrisburg, Boone Co, although I couldn't find the stones. They had two daughters: Narcissa and Etta. Narcissa is also buried in Harrisburg, but apparently no death date appears on the stone.

I suspect that Wiley's parents may be Calvin (Cobble) Crews (1818-1883) and Narcissa (1827-1893). They lived in Henry County and are buried there. They had a son Wiley (b. abt 1852 per the IGI) and I would like to prove or disprove that their son is the same as the Wiley P. who m. Mary Stewart.

I am also interested in any information you might have regarding the Stewart family. Mary's parents were Willliam H. Stewart (1819-1890) and Cyntha Ann Manuel Stewart (1818-1873). They are buried in Bethlehem Cemetery near Harrisburg.

SIMS...OVERSTREET
My grandfather (Elijah Samuel Sims) was a son of John James Sims, who was born (1836) in Howard County and who married Mary Francis Overstreet (daughter of William Bruce Overstreet) in Howard County in 1839, and died in probably Cooper County in 1909. His father James Sims (Simms in some later census reports) was born in Kentucky in 1803 and married in Howard County to Nancy Ann Benson (daughter of Amos? and Sallie) in 1827. She was born in Virginia. I am interested in records that can give me any lead on James's middle initial, father, etc. Since he was a landowner, received land patents, etc., I assume I should look at probate records, deeds, and possibly obituaries (both he and Ann lived past the 1880 census). He and Ann had 10 children: 5 girls (Missouri Ann, Charlotte, Rebecca, Mary Margaret, and Susan) and 5 boys (Samuel Elijah d. in Civil War, Nathaniel Benson -Civil War veteran, John James-Civil War veteran, Martin Van Buren-Civil War veteran, and George W). James stayed in the Booneslick part of Howard County but at least John James moved to the Lamine/Old Lamine/Blackwater area of Cooper County. I am also interested in William Bruce Overstreet, Elias Jerome Bedwell, father of my grandmother (Maude Bedwell) and husband of my great-grandmother Susan Talbot (Bedwell). E.J. Bedwell was a locally noted carver of headstones and monuments. He came to Missouri over Ohio I believe but Susan Talbot was born in Virginia. She was the daughter of William Talbot (b. 1800 Washington Courthouse, Virginia and d. 1872 in Cooper County) --buried in Old Lamine.

MONROE...COPELAND...PIPES...WOLFSKILL...HINES
My name is Rubie Monroe Harris and I descend through Daniel Monroe Sr. who died 1824 and had obit in the Intelligencer saying veteran of the Revolution. I am member of the D.A.R. on this man. I descend through his son Daniel Jr who served at one of the forts and I had copy of his pay voucher and a Daughter of 1812 on him. Dan married Elizabeth Copeland 1819 in Howard county. She was daughter of John Copeland Sr. who was married to Sarah "Sally" Pipes daughter of Sylvanus Pipes. who was son of John Pipes Sr. who left will in Spartanburg co, S.C with his second wife as Priscilla Boling. Original will intact. This Pipes lines goes back to Morris co, N.J . John Pipes Sr. married 1st to Susannah Hathaway daughter of Abraham Hathaway. This line goes back to 1500, John Copeland Sr had Sylvanus Pipes as bondsman for marriage in Mercer co Ky. John Copeland is named as son in will of James Copeland who wife was Martha Johnson. They were Quakers from Isle of Wight Va. Daniel Monroe Jr. was shot by Indians on Santa Fe Trail in 1828 at McNee's Crossing. Among other children Dan left a minor son named John T Monroe. John Copeland was guardian of Dan Jr.'s children. When Dan Sr died his land was partitioned off to Dan Jr., another son William, and 2 names unfamiliar to me, a John Wolfskill and John Hines. They may have been married to Monroe females. Dan Sr. and Jr. are listed in deed books in Warren co Ky when they leave about 1811 to move to Howard co. Dan Sr. wife is named as Eleanor and she releases her dower rights as Eleanor. They are buried in Clark's Chapel Cemetery. My Aunt Rubie Harris Eustis had a D.A.R. marker placed there in 1932, which is the year I was born and this family research had been going on for 3 years.
If you can help me with Wolfskill and Hines, I would appreciate it very much. Incidentally, President Monroe's brother, Joseph Jones Monroe married his 4th wife there. She was Hilda Hubbard.
Dan Monroe Jr.'s son, John T Monroe became the mayor of New Orleans where I now live. My grandfather Reuben G Harris married the mayor's daughter Selina. The Monroe family tomb is in Cypress Grove Cemetery about 2 miles from where I now write. I have copy of Judge Thorp manuscript which tells of the early people moving into Howard county. He mentions Daniel Monroe Sr and Jr who were cousins of the president. New Orleans records say so. It appears true at this time because President James Monroe's brother Joseph Jones Monroe died in Franklin, in Howard county, and same year as my ancestor Dan Sr. The immigrant Monroe came from Katewell Scotland to St. Mary's county, Md, then moved across the Potomac to Westmoreland county, Va. where President Monroe's ancestors stayed on there for several generations. Some move to Ky like my Dan. This family from Foulis Castle near Inverness, Scotland and a barony established 1056 when Monroe fought with King Malcolm. We are speaking of the times of Shakespeare's Macbeth. That castle still stands today and there is a baron there today. The lineage is known through Clan Munro US.A. I also belonged to Daughter of the Confederacy on Mayor Monroe's line. I write to you this day so this distinguished Monroe family of Howard co, Mo not be forgotten.
If you could get me a copy of Dan Sir obit in Intelligencer newspaper, I would appreciate it so much and also copy of the deed of partition. 1824.Incidently the Pipes line mention goes to Bristol, Massachusetts and 100 years earlier in England.
