BROOKS, JOHN, ESQ. ca. 1806 - Apr. 13, 1881. Mother was Nancy ___ Brooks, b. ca. 1884 in North Carolina, living in Shannon County in 1850 with her daughter, Lucinda Shirley. John married Elizabeth Shirley (died 7/12/1877, buried at Miller Cemetery). Children: Monroe, Nancy Jane (m. Caleb Miller), John Wesley, (m. Ellen Lesley (or Sesley), a negro slave, in 1877, Dent Co; his children were Edna & a boy. John requested to be buried near his negro slaves on the ridge above Max post office & Antioch School. John was a large landowner and changed his will just before his death to his little colored boy. Quite a number of negro slaves are buried on this ridge, some belonging to Holman family; the ridge divides two prongs of the Meramec River headwaters.
