Introduction

William Mitchell was one of the first settlers in Dade County, MO. He and Eleanor came to Dade county in 1848, having raised one crop in Greene county in 1847. Like many of the early pioneers of the country, in selecting a location the choice was decided by the presence of springs, two of which were found in Center township, northeast of Greenfield. Mr. Mitchell locating near one and his son-in-law, William L. Scroggs locating near the other one. Mr. Mitchell bought some land of John M. Rankin and entered some from the government. On the original homestead he built the first brick house in the county. He burned the brick in a kiln erected near Sac river. This was in 1856. At the time of his death he was the oldest man in the county -- 95 years.

William joined the rush for gold. He went with William Scroggs (who wrote about the adventure in his memoir), and two sons. They witnessed the beginnings of Eureka, Oregon, and although they didn't hit gold, they did do well helping to supply the other gold rushers.

William married Eleanor Stockard "Nellie" daughter of William Stockard and Leah Mann on 6 Nov 1823 in Big Bigby, Maury Co., TN. Eleanor was born on 25 Nov 1804 in North Carolina. She died on 9 May 1875 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO.

They had the following children:

Salina Jane Mitchell "Sally" was born on 9 Oct 1824. She died about 1829 in Big Bigby, TN.

James Whitfield Mitchell was born on 15 May 1826. He died on 27 May 1863. The cause of death was Congestion of lungs.

William Luthor Mitchell was born on 11 Jun 1828. He died on 23 Feb 1863.

Leah Caroline Mitchell was born on 24 Aug 1832. She died in 1884.

Samuel Williamson Mitchell was born on 21 Feb 1833. He died on 4 Jan 1902.

John Franklin Mitchell was born on 29 May 1835. He died on 4 Apr 1909.

David Newton Mitchell was born on 27 Nov 1837 in Mississippi. He died on 19 Apr 1875 in Missouri.

Mary Elizabeth Mitchell was born on 28 Aug 1841 in Mississippi. She died on 9 Mar 1906 in Humansville, MO. She was buried in Plum Grove Cemetery, Humansville, MO.

Mary married Archibald Hopper on 4 May 1871 in Dade County, MO. Archibald was born on 24 Mar 1823 in Bedford Co., TN. He died on 4 Sep 1900 in Humansville, Polk, MO. He was buried in Plum Grove Cemetery, Humansville, MO.

Martin Leonidas Mitchell was born on 21 Mar 1844. He died on 8 Apr 1929.

George Benton Mitchell M.D. was born on 27 May 1847. He died on 5 Jul 1919.

Second Generation

William Luthor Mitchell (William) was born on 11 Jun 1828. He died on 23 Feb 1863.

William married Mary Brady Mutchmore .

They had the following children:

Mary Ella Mitchell was born in 1860. She died in 1888. Mary married Lee Dorsey .

James Whitefield Mitchell was born in 1863.

Leah Caroline Mitchell (William) was born on 24 Aug 1832 in Holly Springs, MS. She died in 1884 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO.

Leah married¹ William Lee Scroggs son of Joseph Scroggs and Jane Davis on 11 Jul 1846 in Arkansas. William was born on 3 Apr 1816 in Lenoir, Caldwell County, NC. He died on 16 Apr 1894 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO.

William Lee Scroggs originally purchased 80 acres of land in Dade County. He later purchased considerably more land adjoining his original farm. He helped establish the Ebeneezer Church in Greenville. He was a merchant and a public administrator for Dade County. In addition, he was listed as probate judge. He and Caroline had fourteen children; four died young. Caroline was probably called Leah, her middle name, as this name was used on legal documents and historical records. They lived the rest of their lives in Greenville. William's first son John E. fought in the Civil War and was a very successful business man in Greenville. William wrote a family history which is the source of this sketch. It was dated 3 April, 1893 when he was 77 years old. He died one year later, in April, 1894. Maurice, grandson of William, wrote about his grandfather. "I have heard my father describe the Sabbath as it was observed in the home of my grandfather. No unnecessary words were said, no work was done, except the most necessary. All food was cooked on Saturday. They drove in their wagon to a 'preachin', took dinner with them, for the 'preachin' was morning and afternoon. After returning from the service, the stock was fed, cold food was put on the table and eaten in silence. Grandfather had copies of 'Henry's Commentaries on the Bible' and each member of the family read. If a stranger dropped in, he was given a chair and book. Bright and early on Monday morning, the stranger was greeted and news exchanged."

William Lee Scroggs married Rachel Jane Erwin, born 1823 in Iredell Co., NC, daughter of the Rev. John M. Erwin. They had one child:

John E. Scroggs was born on 18 Nov 1843 in Arkansas. He died on 24 Dec 1929 in Greenfield, Dade County, Missouri. He was buried in Greenfield Cemetery.

John married (1) Malinda C. Dicus daughter of John Mitchel Dicus and Mary Jane Tucker on 18 Nov 1869 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. Malinda was born in May 1848 in Center Township, Dade Co., MO. She died on 28 Nov 1875 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO.

They had the following children:

Rachel Jane Scroggs. Rachel married Lon Hurt .

Ruth Scroggs was born in 1872. Ruth married R. E. Wasson .

John married (2) Rosanna Virginia McConnell daughter of Archie Theodore McConnell and Margaret Watson on 8 Mar 1877 in Dade County, MO. Rosanna was born on 16 Feb 1850 in Sac Township, Dade County, MO. She died in Nov 1882 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO.

They had the following children:

Edwin Theodore Scroggs was born in Apr 1878 in Dade County, MO. He died in Apr 1948. He was buried in Greenfield Cemetery. Edwin married Katherine Mitchell "Kate, Katie" daughter of John Franklin Mitchell and Mary Hardwick. Katherine was born in 1875 in Missouri. She died in 1939.

William L. Scroggs was born in 1879. He died⁶ in Nov 1961 in Springfield, MO. He was buried in Springfield, MO. William married Maude Engleman on 10 May 1905. Maude was born on 15 Jan 1873 in MO. She died in Sep 1963 in Springfield, MO.

David Davis Scroggs was born⁷ in May 1880. He died in Feb 1960. He was buried in Appleton City, MO. David married Lottie V. Hartsock .

Rosa Ellen Scroggs was born⁸ on 11 Oct 1882 in Dade County, MO. She died on 7 Aug 1962. Rosa married Thomas King McConnell son of John Sharp McConnell and Mary Ann King on 28 Oct 1908 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. Thomas was born on 27 Jul 1873 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. He died on 22 Jul 1938 in Springfield, MO.

John married (3) Nannie F. Lieuallen on 19 Jun 1883 in Dade County, Missouri. Nannie was born about 1853. She died in Nov 1912.

John married (4) Evelyn E. (Fisher) Ketchum "Eva" on 14 Nov 1914 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. Evelyn was born on 1 Jul 1865 in Pontiac, Livingston Co., IL.

Leah and William L. Scroggs had the following children:

William Lindley Scroggs "Willie" was born² on 15 Apr 1849 in Arkansas. He died³ on 24 Aug 1878 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. The cause of death was Typhoid Fever. He was buried on 25 Aug 1878 in Greenfield Cemetery.

Dr. Joseph Whitefield Scroggs was born on 26 Oct 1852. He died on 23 Nov 1940.

Mary Francis Scroggs was born in 1854. She died in 1917.

Ellen Winifred Scroggs "Ella" was born in 1855. Ellen married Judge John Brumbeck . John died in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Laura S. Scroggs was born on 1 Apr 1859. She died on 17 Jun 1950.

Rev. Luther Mitchell Scroggs was born in 1861 in MO. He died in Hillsdale, Kansas. Luther married (1) Josephine Fasterly in 1891 in MI, and (2) Harriet Darrill in MO.

Minnie Scroggs was born in 1866.

Dr. Walter Reese Scroggs was born on 10 May 1868. He died on 18 Jul 1955.

Lillie Caroline Scroggs was born in 1869.

Alfred M. Scroggs was born in 1871. He died in 1920.

Belle Scroggs was born in 1873. She died in 1956.

Samuel Williamson Mitchell (William) was born on 21 Feb 1833. He died on 4 Jan 1902.

Samuel married (1) Nettie C. Reece on 28 Feb 1861. Nettie died on 1 Aug 1869.

They had the following children:

Nellie Lucas Mitchell was born in 1862. Nellie married J. Hamilton Baile in 1914.

Katie Lucas Mitchell was born in 1864. She died in 1864.

Lula Bell Mitchell was born in 1866. She died in 1866.

Annette Sterrigere Mitchell was born in 1869. She died in 1872.

Samuel married (2) Susan Sterringer on 21 Apr 1871. Susan died on 27 Jul 1895.

They had the following children:

Mary Josephine Mitchell was born in 1871.

George Whitefield Mitchell was born in 1873. He died in 1922. George married Sarah Laird .

William David Mitchell was born in 1875. He died in 1906 in California.

John Franklin Mitchell (William) was born on 29 May 1835 in MS. He died on 4 Apr 1909 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO.

John married Mary Hardwick on 18 Dec 1856 in Mississippi. Mary was born in 1841 in Minnesota. She died in 1903.

Emma Rachel Mitchell was born in 1870. She died in 1903 in Missouri.

Lucy Sophronia Mitchell was born in 1873. She died in 1904 in Missouri.

Katherine Mitchell was born in 1875. She died in 1939.

George Franklin Mitchell was born in 1878. George married Jean Arnot .

Annette Ruth Mitchell was born in 1884.

Martin Leonidas Mitchell "Tobe" (William) was born on 21 Mar 1844 in LaFayette County, Mississippi. He died on 8 Apr 1929 in MS.

Martin married⁴ Sarah J. Boland "Sallie" daughter of John Boland and Rebecca Hudspeth on 4 Sep 1867 in Dade County, MO. Sarah was born on 15 Oct 1848 in Dade County, MO.

They had the following children:

Winifred L. Mitchell was born on 3 Oct 1868 in Dade County, MO. She died in 1898. Winifred married Richard Marshall in 1898.

James Madison Mitchell was born on 5 Sep 1872 in Dade County, MO. James married Ora Bell Mitchell in 1911.

Florence Eleanor Mitchell was born on 19 Feb 1880. She died on 14 Sep 1917.

George Benton Mitchell M.D. (William) was born on 27 May 1847 in Greenfield, Dade Co., MO. He died on 5 Jul 1919 in Kansas City, Kansas.

George married Lucinda Catherine Paisley "Lou" on 28 Dec 1871 in Illinois. Lucinda was born on 30 Jul 1846 in Illinois. She died on 13 Feb 1926 in Kansas City, Kansas.

They had the following children:

Clara Ella Mitchell was born on 29 Jan 1873.

Laura Bell Mitchell was born in 1874 in Illinois.

Third Generation

James married Margaret Ella Smith in 1893.

Florence Eleanor Mitchell was born in 1894 in IL. Florence married Curtis Angle Brewer in 1921.

Samuel Mutchmore Mitchell was born in 1895 in IL. Samuel married Helen Tussing in 1922.

Alice Brady Mitchell was born in 1898 in MO. Alice married George Andrew Harrah .

James Whitefield Mitchell was born in 1901 in MO.

Dr. Joseph Whitefield Scroggs (Leah Caroline Mitchell, William) was born on 26 Oct 1852 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. He died on 23 Nov 1940 in Norman, OK.

Joseph married (1) Flora Hawley Beckwith daughter of Milan Sumner Beckwith and Flora M.Putnam on 30 Aug 1879. Flora was born on 24 Aug 1861 in Pana, IL. She died on 12 Jun 1901 in Eureka, KS.

They had the following children:

Maurice Dwight Scroggs was born on 26 May 1880 in Vinita, OK. He died on 11 Oct 1971 in Seattle, King County, WA. Maurice married Sally Ann Campbell "Essie" on 11 Sep 1912 in Hermiston, OR. Sally was born on 14 Sep 1885. She died on 13 Mar 1978 in Seattle, King Co., WA.

Wendell Scroggs died in Hutchinson, Kansas.

Gladys Flora Scroggs . Gladys married Thomas Hawthorne . Thomas died in Portland, ORegon.

Schiller Scroggs was born on 31 May 1892. He died⁵ on 9 Feb 1976 in Winter Park, FL.

Milan Beckwith Scroggs was born in 1897. He died in 1897.

Joseph married (2) Idore Rose on 29 Nov 1906.

Mary Francis Scroggs "Fannie" (Leah Caroline Mitchell, William) was born in 1854. She died in 1917.

Mary married⁶ John A. Orr on 12 Nov 1874 in Greenfield, Dade Co., MO.

They had the following children:

Alfred William Orr was born on 25 Dec 1875 in Missouri. He died in May 1974. Alfred married (1) Edith H. Dunlap, and (2) Mary Elizabeth Stewart .

George Boyd Orr was born in 1876. George married Lucy Boyd .

Dr. Charles Houston Orr was born in 1881. Charles married Virginia Peidler .

Caroline Jane Orr was born in 1886. She died in 1908.

Laura S. Scroggs (Leah Caroline Mitchell, William) was born on 1 Apr 1859 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. She died on 17 Jun 1950 in Denver, CO. She was buried in Greenfield, Dade County, MO.

Laura married⁷ Thomas Alexander McConnell "Alex" son of Thomas McConnell Jr. and Narcissa Pocahontas Patterson on 20 Jul 1876 in William Lee Scroggs's home. Thomas was born on 3 Jul 1854 in Dade County, MO. He died in 1925. He was buried in San Anselmo, CA.

Thomas McConnell Jr. "Tom" was born on 20 Jun 1826 in VA. He died on 18 Mar 1869. He was buried in Pemberton's Graveyard.

Tom lived for a while with the Henry H. Pemberton family after he arrived in Missouri. Probably he came with a group of family members who came to MO in 1848.

In June 1864, as Kinch West and his band of guerillas left the town of Melville (Dadeville) MO which they had burned, they passed the home of Thomas McConnell. Thomas was sick in bed, and they carried him out into the yard with his wife and two sons, and then set fire to his house. House and contents were lost. The neighbors joined in and built him a little house on the premises, and he remained there until his death.

Narcissa Pocahontas Patterson "Sis, Cis" was born on 26 Mar 1837 in TN. She died on 11 Jan 1910. She was buried in Rice Cemetery, Dadeville, MO. Her parents were Alexander Patterson and Elizabeth Mitchell, who apparently came from Kentucky, possibly as early as 1838. Her siblings were: Lunsford (b. abt 1833), Nancy (abt 1836), Hanah (abt 1838), Thomas (abt 1840), Joseph A. (abt 1842), Archibald Clinton Patterson (6 Sep 1843), and DeWitt (1845). Tom and Sis had a second child, John B. McConnell, born on 29 Aug 1861 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. He died on 28 Nov 1945. John married Ella Nora Kirby on 28 Dec 1881. Ella was born on 1 Sep 1863 in Dade County, MO. She died on 25 Oct 1927.

Laura and Thomas had the following children:

Leon McConnell was born on 2 Apr 1877. He died in Jan 1878. He was buried in Pemberton Cemetery.

Minnie Gray McConnell was born on 29 Dec 1880 in Dadeville, MO. She died on 8 Aug 1914. The cause of death was Typhoid fever.

Mary Ella McConnell was born on 4 Dec 1884. She died in 1909.She was buried in KS, Iola. Mary married Aried Funkhouser on 4 Oct 1907.

Ben Harrison McConnell was born on 8 Sep 1889 in Greenfield, Dade County, MO. He died⁸ on 30 Jul 1979 in Denver, CO. Ben married (1) Lucy Almira Huckin daughter of Thomas William Huckin and Martha A. Minnie married Thomas E. Schriver in 1888.

William Horace Weir was born on 15 Sep 1890 in MO. He died in Apr 1980 in Greenfield, MO. William married Millie C. Fiecker in 1931 in MO.

Ernest Leslie Weir was born on 18 Oct 1898 in MO. He died on 31 Jul 1994 in Greenfield, MO. Ernest married Jewel Glasscock in 1919 in MO.

Flora Belle Weir was born on 16 Dec 1900. She died in Jul 1995 in Goddard, KS. Flora married Leroy Churchman in 1923 in MO. Leroy was born on 23 Apr 1898. He died in Nov 1964 in Goddard, KS.

Leah Caroline Weir was born in 1906.

Mary Frances Weir was born in 1908.

Alfred M. Scroggs "Fred" (Leah Caroline Mitchell, William) was born in 1871 in MO. He died in 1920 in Iola, Kansas.
