From the book "The Good Old Times in McLean Co. IL." by Dr. E. Duis Page 528 " In the fall of 1828, my (Robert Franklin Dickerson) father (Michael Dickerson) sold his claim and his mill to William Hampton, a Tennesseean, who is remembered by many who are yet living."

page 799 " When Mr. Noble (Joseph Karr Noble) was twenty-four years of age, he married Miss Lemira Hampton, who was born within the boundaries of the present county of McLean. Her father came to the country from Tennessee, the year before the deep snow."

From The History of McLean County Illinois

" Michael Dickerson came to Randolph Grove in 1825, and took up a claim on Section 28. He built a mill on the Little Kickapoo, above the junction of the two streams. There was water enough to run it about half the a year. He sold to William Hampton, who was of the Wade Hampton connection, who, about twelve years later sold to Bishop, and went to the Ozark Mountains in Missouri. This was the first mill ever built in this township, there was no bolt in the mill; people who patronized the mill had to "sarch" the flour as it was termed. In entering the land, this property came into the possession of Mr. Baldwin." Next paragraph mentions John Baldwin and Siebern(Seaborn) Baldwin.

There is a William Hampton listed as a member of 1Reg't (Pipkin's) West Tennessee Militia in the War of 1812. William would have been the right age to have served in the War of 1812, but have not been able so far to find out if this is our William Hampton.

Bio of Joseph Karr Noble from The Good Old Times in McLean County, ILL published 1874

Joseph K Noble was born October 9 1823, in Whitewater township, Hamilton County, Ohio. His fathers name was Joseph Noble, and his mother's name before her marriage was Nancy Karr. Joseph Noble was born in Ohio, and Nancy Karr in New Jersey. Both were of American descent. The Noble family, consisting of six members in all, came to Randolph's Grove, McLean County, Illinois, in the fall of 1831. There Joseph Noble bought a farm partly improved for one hundred and fifty dollars and two horses and a wagon. During the first winter they lived in a large log cabin with an entry between. But their conveniences were not great, as two other families as large as their own lived with them. During that winter, nearly all the streams were frozen up, so that the mills could not run. Every family was therefore obliged to have its hominy mortar with which to crack frostbitten corn. They had no fruit nor vegetables, except turnips, but had plenty of venison and wild turkeys. Joseph Noble was then a lad eight years of age, but the scenes of those early days are clearly impressed on his mind. He remembers going with a party out to a wolf pen put up Gardner Randolph, and there finding a wolf, which was so incautious as to trust himself within it. The following is Mr Noble's description of the pen: " It was made of logs notched close at the corners, growing gradually smaller at the top, so that when the wolf was on the outside it was easy to clumb up, but too high to clumb out while on the inside." The settlers usually killed the wolves by chasing them on horseback and killing them with clubs. During the Black Hawk war, the settlers were often frightened , and Mr Noble tells a queer story of a scare he experienced while out in the woods at play. Said he; " I heard a strange noise and started to the house taking my youngest brother on my back. Looking across the field I saw my father coming on his horse from the plow as fast as possible. We arrived at the house out of breath and found that the bees were swarming, and mother was calling for father and was pounding a frying pan with a large iron spoon to make the bees settle. You may be sure that we were glad the trouble was occasioned by bees instead of Indians." Mr Noble did not receive an extended education. He went to school when quite young, and one of his teachers was John Moore, afterwards Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. Mr Noble learned at an early age what it was to work. At the age of fifteen he drove a team of ten steers, called a prairie breaking team. With them he broke ground for various parties, among others for James Allin, of Bloomington. He broke the ground where the Chicago and Alton Machine Shops now stand. The remainder of Mr Noble's sketch may be given in his own words; " I cannot remember precisely all of the settlers who were in Randolph;s Grove when I first came. They were usually young folks with small families. But notwithstanding their few children, they were obliged to work very hard for their own and their children's support, for nearly all their wearing apparel was made by themselves, was spun, woven, cut, fitted and sewed. The people here were from many States, but they all appeared members of one family. They endured the privations and discomforts of life together. When any one needed assistance it was always forthcoming. The women had quiltings and sewing bees, and the men had house raisings and corn huskings. In after years the different settlements joined toghether in wolf hunts, raised a pole on a high piece of ground, hoisted a flag and on a certain day all turned out and drove the game to the center. When they came near the pole, it was fun to see some on foot with long rifies ready to shoot the first deer or wolf, and others on hourses chasing the tired game. Some would be thrown from their horses , and others would fall when their horses stumbled in the active chase. Those good old times will never come again." When Mr Noble was twenty four years of age, he married Miss Lemira Hampton, who was born within the boundaries of the present county of McLean. Her father came to the country from Tennessee, the year before the deep snow. Mr Noble has had six children, of whom five are living. They are; John S. Charles M., Nannie M, Robert K, and Joseph P Noble; all fo whom live at home. Mr Noble is about five feet and ten inches in height, is rather spare and straight, and has dark hair and gray eyes. He appears to be a very good neighbor, and his remarks concerning the old settlers and the condition of things during the early days, show him to be a man of good feeling.

Notes for HUGH I HAMPTON:

Obituary - Greenfield Vedette; May 10, 1923

Hugh Hampton

Hugh Hampton, 65 years of age, a well known farmer of Center Township, was stricken by heart failure last Saturday evening at about 7 o'clock, death being instantaneous. Mr Hampton had been in poor health for several years, being a sufferer from diabetes, but had kept up his work on his farm west of the city, going out every day from his home on West College street and seemed to be feeling as well as usual on Saturday evening when he returned home. School Superintendent Roy R Evans, a neighbor of Mr Hampton, was out of town on Saturday and requested Mr Hampton to milk his cow and look after his property during his absence; Mr and Mrs Hampton went to the Evans place after supper to attend to this and while there he suffered the fatal attack of heart trouble.

Hugh Hampton was born on November 15th, 1857, near Greenfield, Missouri, a son of the late James and Emily Hampton.

He was married to Sarah P Renfro in November, 1878. Two children were born to this union, a daughter who died in infancy, and a son, Alva, who survives him. Mrs Hampton died in April of 1888. In 1890 he married Miss Jemima Cunningham, who survives him with their two daughters, Mrs H R Gemberling of Aurora, and Miss Dorothy of the home address.

He also leaves to mourn his loss, two sisters, Mrs Matt Allison of Greenfield, and Mrs Win Anderson of Ogden, Utah, and three brothers, Ab and Frank Hampton of Dade County and Charley Hampton of Barton County. he had lived in Greenfield for the past 20 years. He professed faith in Christ when a young man but never united with any church.

Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church on Sunday afternoon, conducted by W H Ferguson of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church and interment was made in Greenfield Cemetery.

Among the friends and relatives from out of the city who attended the funeral were Mr and Mrs L F Sewell, Mr and Mrs James Cunningham , Mrs H A Peterson and J G Carr , all of Springfield; Mrs and Mrs William Cunningham, Miss Eva Appleby, Fayette and Alec Cunningham of Lockwood; Mr and Mrs H B Bemberling and Mrs Helen Burney of Aurora; Charles P Hampton and family of Lamar.

Hugh Hampton was a type of industrious and energetic farmer which is the real strength of the nation. He was known as " the hardest working man in Dade County ", and his ability to make every move count brought unusual success to his endeavors. His whole life was spent in Dade County, and the county is better for his having lived; by the cleared and fruitful fields where he found a wilderness, and by his example of success through patient industry.

Notes for SARAH PRICE RENFRO:

Obituary--Greenfield Vedette; February 27 1930

Albert L Hampton

Albert Louis Hampton was born in Dade County, Missouri, December 29th, 1858, and departed this life at his home, west of Greenfield, on February 21st, 1930, aged 71 years, 1 month and 21 days. He was a son of the late James and Emily Hampton.

On October 14th, 1877, he was married to Martha Jeffries. To his union were born four children, one dying in infancy. Two sons, Emmet and Charley, and one daughter, Mrs Anna Vincent, with his companion, survive. He also leaves five grandchildren and three great - grandchildren, one brother, Charley, of Chanute, Kansas, and tow sister, Mrs Orillo Anderson of Oakland , California, and Mrs M W Allison of Greenfield , to mourn his departure.

About forty-six years ago he gave his heart to God and often told his loved ones that he was ready to go to his home beyond. He lived a life of friendliness in our midst, and his word was always good among his fellow men. As the poor and needy came to him, they never went away empty-handed. We feel that we have lost a good neighbor and friend. His love for his home and children held him always within their circle. On the old homestead, he lived and loved and died. By faith we see another world where he awaits our coming.

Funeral services were held at the family home on Sunday, February 23rd, at 2:30 p m and interment was made in Wetzel cemetery, nearby.

19. CHARLES MENAPHE4 NOBLE (LEMIRA3 HAMPTON, WILLIAM P2, UNKNOWN FAMILY1 MEMBERS) was born December 16, 1850. He married MINNIE STEVENSON June 01, 1876 in Champaign Illinois.

Notes for CHARLES MENAPHE NOBLE:

Charles Menaphe Noble , M D -- Because of his skill as a physician and sterling qualities as a man, Dr Charles Menaphe Noble, of Bloomington Ill. has occupied an increasingly enviable position during the thirty two years of his professional life. Dr Noble is a native son of Mc Lean County Illinois , and was born Dec. 16 1850, on a farm near Heyworth. His parents were Joseph K. and Lermira (Hampton) Noble, and his maternal great grandfather, Karr, was a Captain in the Revolutionary War. Largely through his own industry and resources, Dr Noble laid the foundation of his present usefulness in exceptional educational advantages. He attended the district, high and normal schools of McLean County, and the Illinois State University, his professional training being received at the Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, from which he was graduated with honors on March 11 1876. He took up the practice of his profession at McLean where he remained until February 1898, when he removed to Bloomington. Since then he has followed his profession in this city, and his name stands for the great scientific truths of the regular school as applied to the amelioration of the sufferings of the race. He is a profound student of the theories advanced by members of the profession the world over, but is cautious and painstaking in his acceptance or application of the more recent suggestions of science. He is a safe and conservative physician, and as such wields a wide influence in professional affairs of McLean County.

Dr Noble is a man of scholarly tastes and wide general information. Two literary clubs profit by his membership, the Bloomington Longfellow Club and the College Alumni Club. He is interested in art as well as science, in the occupations of the fields as well as of the crowded marts, and is president of the Lilly Orchard Company of Bloomington. In religion he is a Presbyterian. The marriage of Dr Noble and Minnie Stevenson occurred in Champaign, Ill, June 1 1876, the year of the beginning of his professional life. Of this union there are two children. Robert Avery, the son, graduated from the medical department of the Northwestern University in 1901, after which he spent two years in the Chicago Hospital. In 1903 he became a partner with his father ( the firm name being Noble and Noble ), and later had some experience in hospital work in Vienna and Breslau. The daughter is named Lena Lilly. Dr Noble is a Republican in politics, but never has sought honors outside of what he considers his legitimate field of activity. His wife is tuned to high ideals and filled with great usefulness, and he has won that success which comes only through contributing to the permanent well being of the world.

During Dr Noble's residence at McLean, Ill. he served for twelve years as a member of the School Board, and for the past three years has acted in the same capacity in Bloomington.

In May 1907, Dr Noble made a trip to Europe where he spent the summer--- putting in some time at the medical institutions of Vienna, Berlin and London.----- From the Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of McLean County, pages 1221 and 1222

Sermon In Miniature by Mrs E R Hampton -- Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. The disciples were tired and weary so they slept. Many people are asleep today spiritually. They forget to watch and pray so Satan can tempt and attract them easily. He never sleeps or takes a vacation so we should watch our lives and our influence upon others. Christ wants us to be humble. He did not teach His disciples how to preach. He was interested in their prayer life, so when He gathered His theological students around Him, He taught them how to pray. We should often make that prayer, Lord teach me to pray and pray the prayer of contrition. The nearer we get to God, the more we will think of His Holiness and abhor ourselves. How small we will become and how great and mighty our God will be. When Isaiah saw God he cried "Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts." And then what did he say? " I am unclean , and wanted the coal to taken from the alter and put upon his lips that his iniquity might be purged away. Let us as Christians keep in mind that humility is an important thing.
