The Descendants of William Pyle and Hannah Standlee

First Generation

      1. William Pyle was born in 1800 in Christian Co. KY.  He died in 1875 in Dade Co. MO, and was buried in Rice Cemetery, Dadeville, Dade Co. MO.  His parents were William Pyle and Elizabeth Kirby.

From "History of Dade County and Her People”:

". . .  William Pyle Sr. and his wife, Hannah, born Standlee; the father of English and the mother of Scottish descent.  The elder Pyle, whose original ancestors in America came over with William Penn, emigrated from the vicinity of Pinkneyville, Ill. . .  to Dade County, Missouri in the year 1850, bringing with him his entire family, which consisted of his wife and several sons and daughters, the sons being all of the tall pioneer type.  These sons, as well as the daughters, are now all dead, Carter S. having died in Kansas in the early 70's; David, the oldest son, in Tennessee in 1881, and Claudius L. (uncle Less), in January 1913, in Dade County, Missouri.  William Pyle Sr. settled near the old Mt. Zion church in Sac Township, or, rather, not far from where that church was after located, he being one of the organizers of it.  He preached there occasionally, or, maybe, regularly, for a while, being an early adherent of Alexander Campbel and member of the Christian, or Disciples', church.  Besides preaching, he tilled the soil, ran the Seybert mill for a while, and, to diminish the monotony, read a great deal out of some ancient histories and other books, which he was fortunate in possessing, and of whose contents he was thoroughly familiar.  Died in the year 1875, not rich, but well esteemed."

From "Craig Family," Ancestry.com:

"Rev William Pyle married Hannah Standlee about the year of 1821.  He had a long and distinguished career as a minister of the Gospel in the Christian Church.  He is best remembered for his work at Tamaroa, Illinois.  From the 'History of Randolph, Monroe and Perry Counties of Illinois' it states that Rev William Pyle lived in Tamaroa Township in 1830 and he was one of the first preachers of the Christian church in Perry County. . . .  Rev. William Pyle with his family and congregation migrated to Missouri.  Rev. Pyle settled in Dade County, Missouri in the year of 1850.  Dr. Octavious Pyle led a wagon train to Worth County, Missouri in 1853. . . .  Rev Pyle continued to serve the Christian Church in Missouri."

William married Hannah Standlee, daughter of Onicypherous Standlee and Mary Stratton Bryan, about 1821 in Perry Co. IL.  Hannah was born in 1802 in KY.  She died in 1876 in Dade Co. MO and was buried in Rice Cemetery, Dade Co. MO.  William and Hannah had the following children:

Becker County MN Ancestry.com message board posting by Norma Beaman, message dated 18 May 1999:

“ Dr. David Stanley Pyle was born 1825 in Perry County, Illinois and was the first son of William Pyle Jr., born in Christian County, Kentucky 1800, and Hannah Standlee born in Kentucky in 1802.  History tells us that David was a man of outstanding physical and spiritual force, over six feet in height and strong and vigorous in both mind and body.  David married Mary Pyle,a distant cousin, about 1856 in Missouri. Mary was born in Green County, Missouri in 1838 and lived in Rolla, Missouri as a young girl. David and Mary moved back to Illinois where sons Alonzo was born in 1857 and Arkley born in 1861. David and Mary's son Orson was born in 1864 in California. Son Claude born 1869 and daughter Maude, was born in 1874 in Minnesota. Maude died in 1875.  David and Mary joined a wagon train in Missouri to travel the Oregon Trail to California via South Pass but didn't like California and moved to Becker Co., Minnesota in 1867. There his son Claude was born near the White Earth Indian Reservation where David was a Government Physician to the Chippewa Indians.  One day while Dr. David was away from home some of the Indians came and took Orson away for awhile. Mary didn't quite know what to do. When they brought him back he was wearing a pair of Indian Moccasins which are still in the family in good condition.  Dr. David left Becker County sometime in 1873 and went to Monticello, Minnesota to set up a practice of medicine. When they left their neighbors prepared a banquet for the family and presented Dr. Pyle with a gold headed cane on which was engraved a chronicle of his helpfulness to early settlers.  After the death of their baby daughter Maude, in 1875 in Hale Township, McLeod County, Minnesota they sold their land and home and left by covered wagon headed for Tennessee. Their four sons Alonzo, Arkley, Orson and Claude made the trip with them and they arrived three months later.  There he became a country doctor who rode on horseback or rode in a horse drawn buggy around the area of Capitol Hill, Duncan Town, Estill Springs, Decherd, Hillsboro, and Roark's Cove. One of his patients was William Butler whose daughter Ola Bell Butler, later married his son Claude Pyle.  Two sons were born in Tennessee, Ernest in 1876 and Rolla in 1879. Dr David and Mary are found in the 1880 Census with six sons at home in Franklin County, Tennessee. Dr. David was ill with typhoid fever and treating patients during the typhoid fever outbreak. He became ill and died from complications of typhoid fever in January 1881. He was buried in the North Brick Church Cemetery in Franklin County, Tennessee.”

The book "A Pioneer History of Becker County Minnesota" by Alvin H. Wilcox, published in 1907, contains several references to Dr. David Pyle.   Page 407: "Dr. David Pyle. Dr. David Pyle, who was the first auditor of Becker County, and also the first notary public, was born in Ohio about 1825. When a young man he went farther west, and located I think in Morgan County, Illinois. His wife was a native of Missouri.  Sometime in the early fifties [1850's], he in company with a man by the name of John B. Morgan, with their families crossed the great plains with teams and wagons, by way of the South Pass on their way to the then territory of Oregon. When in what is now Southern Idaho, Morgan had some trouble with his family, and left them, going north with a party of Indians.  The Pyle family proceed to Oregon, where they remained for several years. The next I know of them they were living in McLeod County, where he was elected to the legislature in the fall of 1868. The next spring he was appointed government physician to White Earth [Indian Reservation], and in the fall of 1869 took a homestead in Section 17 and 18, in what is now Audubon Township, where he removed his family in the spring of 1870.”  Page 483: "Chapter XXVII.   . . . That was one of the worst nights I have ever gone through. I and my wife and child were alone, and I was laboring under the impression that the gang from White Earth [Indian Reservation] was coming to kill us. . . . Coming over into the White Earth road a man came along on horseback, and when he saw that we were white people, he commenced to talk and seemed to be a gentleman in all respects. His name was Dr. Pyle, and he was hired by the government as a doctor for the Indians on the White Earth reservation. We told him that we had settled there a few days ago, but had been warned to leave our claims and were told that there were a lot of men from the reservation who were coming to drive us away. He told us to stick to our claims, and not to be afraid, that he was going to White Earth and tell those people that there were some settlers who had taken claims along the grove and that they had better keep away and not bother them."  Page 503:  We stayed at the camp only about six weeks, and then went to Dr. Pyle's, where we lived until we moved onto our claim the first part of April. Dr. Pyle, whose large frame indicated his big, generous heart, made every one welcome, and divided room with each newcomer, as long as another bed could be crowded onto the floor. He made the first Fourth of July oration delivered in Becker County, and it was a good one. Near the close he praised the country, the men and the women, and moving his hand in a circle to include the young mothers that held their babies, said, ‘and the babies, the plentiest, the prettiest in the world, God bless them,’ and sat down amid roars of applause. To the credit of the Audubon people, be it said, that four years later, when the doctor was about to move to Monticello, Minnesota, they made a banquet for him and presented to him a gold-headed cane on which was engraved a chronicle of his helpfulness to the early settlers; and we were told that the cane proved an open sesame to a good practice there."

Article in History of Dade County and Its People:

"Sheridan Byron Pyle-Says of himself: that he was born September 21st, 1856, in Dade County, Missouri. His parents were W. K. and Artimissa Pyle. His mother died in 1861, leaving three children, Lisyra and Rosalia, his two sisters. His father enlisted in the Union army in 1862. Indulgent grandparents cared for the homeless children until 1866, when his father married Mollie Finley and made a home for them on a farm. Rosalia died when 17 years of age. S. B. attended the country schools, and had two years at Morrisville Academy in Polk County, working for his board and tuition. He married Matie Underwood March 31st, 1877. To them have been born four children, Lewis K. Thomas, Roscoe G. and Leslie C., only one still living, Roscoe G. Mrs. Pyle's father and mother, L. M. and N. J. Underwood, moved from Minnesota to Missouri soon after the war. Sheridan B. Pyle engaged in the mercantile business in Dadeville in 1880. while not a very successful merchant, still continues in business. He votes the Republican ticket, having but once departed from the faith of his fathers, being in 1912 voted for Theodore Roosevelt for President on the Progressive ticket. He was a candidate for Representative once but was defeated by a good, round majority.  Editorial Note.-It will be seen by the above that Sheridan B. Pyle is a man of extreme modesty, but I know from personal acquaintance that his attainment far outweigh those of men who are given to vain boasting. Mr. Pyle has for years been one of the leading citizens of Dadeville, identified with every public movement, given of his means freely to the support of church and schools, invested in speculative mining enterprises ‘for the good of the community,’ always at the bat in every political campaign to help boost the other fellow into office, a man of wisdom, poise and discretion, being the soul of honor and a perfect Chesterfield in demeanor. Dadeville can well be proud of Sheridan B. Pyle when the entire community proclaims him as her First Citizen. A. J. Young."

Also from History of Dade County and Her People,p. 258:

"Hon. Sheridan B. Pyle.  Son of William K. and Artimisia Pyle, was born in Dade County September 21st, 1856, near the line of Cedar County.  William K. Pyle was one of the early settlers of Dade County.  He came as a young man in the early 40's, and married here.  His wife was a native of Kentucky, her people coming to Missouri in 1832, settling in Greene County, and later came to Dade County, where she met and married William K. Pyle.  She departed this life in 1861, and he was later married to Mollie Finley, a native of Dade County.  William K. Pyle was an active Republican, a veteran of the Civil war, serving about three years.  After he returned from the war he was admitted to the bar and served as prosecuting attorney of Dade County for three terms, served as probate judge one term and served in the state legislature for two terms.  He departed this life in 1892.  Sheridan B. Pyle was the second of a family of three children.  His sister, now living, is Lysira Brayshaw or Lawrence County.  He also has two half-sisters and one half-brother:

(1) Elmer E. Pyle.

(2) Mrs. Jessie Dawson.

(3) Mrs. Willie Hamner.

Sheridan B. Pyle was raised by his grandparents and remained with them until he received his education, after which he engaged in teaching school in Dade County.  He was married on the 31st day of March, 1877, to Matie Underwood, a daughter of Lewis and Nancy (Barber) Underwood, both of whom are still living.  They are thoroughly imbued with the pioneer spirit and now reside in Oregon.  He was a practical surveyor.  Mrs. Pyle was a native of Minnesota, born March 5th, 1858, and came with her people to Dade County after the war.

Mr. Pyle has been more or less of a miner, having been engaged in that occupation both before and after his marriage.  He mined in Galena, Kas., for about one year.  About the year 1880 he was employed in the general merchandise store of Captain E. J. Morris in Dadeville as clerk, but at the end of 18 months became the proprietor, and conducted the business on his own account until 1900, when he opened up a drug store in Dadeville, which he has since conducted.

Mr. Pyle is a staunch Republican in politics, a man of pleasing personality, a public speaker of considerable note and always on the firing line in campaign times.  He also has the distinction of being a 32nd degree Mason.  He was educated at the Morrsville [Morrisville] Academy in Polk County.

Mr. and Mrs. Pyle are the parents of two boys:

     (1) Roscoe G., born March 21st, 1881, married Crete Dunaway, and is an electrician by occupation, and resides at Carthage, Mo.  They have two children, Gerald and Thelma.

     (2) Leslie C., born October 23rd, 1884, married Nora Stradley, a native of Nebraska, and for a few years he lived upon a large ranch, which he owned, at Rogerson, Idaho.  Three children were born to this marriage:  Byron, Eileen and Rahleigh."
