North Township, nine miles northwest of county seat, and who is one of the
prominent agriculturists and stock-raisers of Dade County, is a native of
Greene County, Mo., born January 12, 1840, and is the son of Joseph and Melinda
(Barnett) Killingsworth. Joseph Killingsworth was born in

From "A Martin Family Saga”: “He was 18 years old when he enlisted in the Federal Army on 1 November 1863. He was placed in the 15th Regiment of the Missouri Cavalry in Capt. John Howard's Company. He was discharged from the service of the United States 19 June 1865 at Springfield, Missouri." The book describes him as "a good looking young man, fair complexioned with dark hair and blue eyes."

From A Martin Family Saga: " John came with his family to Missouri from Tennessee about 1850. He lived near Lockwood, Mo. in Dade County until the early 1900s. When John was 19 years old he had an illness that was called 'White Swelling' and it sounds suspiciously like polio. He was left a cripple and he walked with a cane the remainder of his life. John was slight in stature, approximately 5'6" in height and in his late years wore a long beard. From his photograph, he had a full head of hair, deep set eyes and handsome features. . . . Charlie, Ed and Hollis spent the Summer of 1904 and '05 working there [in Oklahoma] and brought back glowing reports of the rich soil. John moved his family to Oklahoma in 1907. The family settled around Apache, Caddo County, Oklahoma and John continued to farm for a number of years. . . John Maxwell Martin died 9 August 1928 at the home of his daughter, Cleo Dodson, in Apache and is buried in the Fairview Cemetery just outside Apache."

From A Martin Family Saga, Chapter Four: "In the Fall of 1876, Elizabeth gave birth to twin sons, Edward and Jessie. Elizabeth and Jessie did not survive, dying in November of 1876. They are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Dade county, Missouri, near the town of Lockwood. The surviving twin was found in the 1880 U.S. Census living with his maternal grandparents, Jacob and Elizabeth Rogers."

From the Greenfield Vedette, November 10, 1927: "Mary Cleo Martin was born August 28, 1849 in Warren Co. Tennessee, and departed this life at her home in Greenfield on November 2, 1927, aged 76 years, 2 months and 5 days. When she was 2 years old she came with her parents to Dade County, where she grew to womanhood. In 1869 she was married to John Lewis. To this union four children were born, two boys and two girls, Charles, Edward, Mattie and Kate. This family moved to Texas many years ago and established their home at Aubrey, where Mr. Lewis died in 1908. Early this year, she returned to Missouri and on Feb. 16, was united in marriage to Alfred Riggs of this city. The few months of their companionship were spent in happiness, renewing old associations and ties of friendship. In early life she was converted and baptized into the fellowship of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was a devoted Christian serving her God by serving humanity. Her life was filled by acts of kindness and generosity, and every hope of the eternal world was left to her loved ones. Funeral services were conducted by the writer at Greenfield Baptist Church on Thursday, November 3rd and internment was made in Ray Springs Cemetery southeast of Everton."

Obituary from A Martin Family Saga, newspaper unknown: "Rev. W. R. Martin was born at Greenfield, Missouri, December 28, 1858, and passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. M. Reed, at Nocona, Texas, June 8, 1939, at the age of 80 years, 5 months and 10 days. He was a resident of Montague County for fifty years. Funeral services were conducted at the Starkey church Friday afternoon, June 9, by his pastor, Rev. Roy Cook, assisted by Rev. Lanford. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Starkey cemetery with the Daugherty Funeral Home in charge. . . . He was converted and joined the Baptist Church at the age of 25 and was a faithful member for more than 55 years. He was ordained to the ministry about 24 years ago. He was married to Martha Cumi Daniel in 1887. Mrs. Martin passed away December 24, 1925. He is survived by one brother, Charlie Martin, Columbus, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Susie Killingsworth, Greenfield, Missouri; two sons, Emmit Martin, Nocona, Texas, and Albert Martin, Oklahoma City, Okla.; one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Reed, Nocona, Texas; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Edna Combs, preceded him in death May 20, 1922."
William married (1) Martha Ellen Cumi Daniel, daughter of Peter Daniel and Mary Cantrell Bethel, on 17 Feb 1878. Martha was born on 29 Jan 1858 in TN. She died on 24 Dec 1925 in Montague Co. TX, and was buried in Starkey Cemetery, near Nocona, Montague Co. TX.
Obituary from A Martin Family Saga, newspaper unknown: "Mrs. Martha C. (Daniel) Martin, wife of Elder W. R. Martin, was called upon to quit the walks of man on Dec 24, 1925. She was born in Tennessee Jan. 29, 1858. Her parents moved to Missouri when she was four years old. She grew to womanhood and married Elder Martin. There were four children born to this union, her youngest daughter having preceded her. One daughter and two sons survive her. Sister Martin professed a hope in Christ at the age of 20, later she united with the Baptist church and had been a member for thirty-five years, when she was called home. She has been a faithful wife, and truly she had been a real preachers wife. Her health had been bad for several years, finally Elder Martin had to give up all his church work in order to take care of her in her later days. The community will miss her kind words and deeds, so will her children; yet no one will miss her like Elder Martin, for she had helped him share the joys and sorrows of life for nearly 48 years. We commend the bereaved ones to Him who never makes mistakes. We will understand better some day. There is consolation in the fact that Sister Martin had said many times that she was prepared to meet death. She truly welcomed death when it came. Her body was buried in the Starkey cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Elder P.A. Walls, which was her request several years ago. By her pastor, K. O. Thompson."

Family Saga,” newspaper unknown: "Mrs.
Chas. Scoggin, 75, well known to the community as "Aunt Jane,' and loved
and respected by a large circle of friends, died at the family home on States
and Hewitt streets in this city on Thursday, Feb. 27, from pneumonia, after an
illness of only a few days, developing the disease on the Sunday before her
death after a visit with an old friend, Mrs. Caroline Duncan who passed away on
Tuesday. Funeral services were conducted
by Rev. Tom Procter at Greenfield Baptist church on Sunday afternoon, and
interment was made in Pleasant Grove cemetery near Neola. Barbara Jane Martin was born May 7, 1860, in
Dade county, Mo., and departed this life Feb. 27, 1936, aged 75 years, 2 months
and 20 days. She was united in marriage
to Chas. Scoggin Dec. 18, 1881. To this
union four children were born, two daughters preceding her in death. She is survived by her husband, two sons,
Perry and Albert Scoggin of California, and adopted daughter, Mrs. Nellie Whitt
of Kansas City, ten grandchildren, two brothers, W. R. Martin of Nocona, Texas,
and C. C. Martin of Columbus, Kan., and
one sister, Mrs. Susie Killingsworth of Greenfield. She was converted at an early age and
baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist church. Through all the years of her Christian life
she lived in the strongest devotion to the principles laid down in the great
Book of God. Since the days of her
childhood no cry of the poor or oppressed has gone unheeded. She has traveled literally thousands of
miles, on foot, horseback and in wagons to visit those who were ill or needed
attention. Her generosity knew no
bounds. The children rise up and call
her blessed. No woman in our midst has
struggled harder to follow in the footsteps of her Redeemer than has she. Side by side her good companion has worked
with her and made it possible to extend to mankind these many kindnesses. We feel very sure that when she reaches the
eternal City of God, that great, beneficent and benign Being whom she has
served so faithfully will say, 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant;
enter thou into the joys of thy Lord.'
Her prayers and benedictions will linger long to bless mankind, even
after her body has moldered back to dust."

chef and restaurant owner for 58 years, retiring in 1985. He and his wife managed
the Wareham Coffee shop for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Zathah Glenn Overstreet-Martin in August, 1990. . . .”

Her husband, Chester Daniel, had been killed 11 July 1890 when he was thrown from his wagon in a runaway of his team of horses. While working for Eliza Daniel he met and fell in love with her daughter, Mary Jane. When Jake was 25 and Mary Jane 19 they were married on the 10 August 1896. In 1903, Jake moved Mary Jane and their two young daughters to Seiling, Oklahoma. The trip was made in a covered wagon and it was while residing here that their son was born. In 1908 Jake moved his family back to Greenfield, Missouri so Mary Jane could be near her mother. They remained in Greenfield until 1919 when they moved to Las Animas, Bent County, Colorado. This move was easier, they used a truck and car. They remained in this location for about seven years. But the Ozarks kept pulling them back and in 1926 they moved to Quitman, Arkansas. . . . “

parents in 1896. He grew to manhood around Nocona in Montague County. He and
Edna Jane Martin started their married life on a farm rented from Virgil's Uncle
Simon. He worked the farm ‘on the halves.’ Uncle Simon furnished the team and
seed and Virgil furnished the labor. At harvest time they split the profits.
Eventually he quit farming and moved into Nocona where he established a dray
business with his horse and wagon. Later he opened a confectioner's shop
serving pies, tarts, soups, and soft drinks. In 1920 he moved his family to
Oklahoma and again farmed as well as working in a cotton gin in Washita County.
His wife Edna, never fully recovering from childbirth, died in May 1922.”

It just so happened that a granddaughter of John Robert Lewis (Zera Ballew) married a grandson of Joel James Manire (Ernest Lawrence Manire). The grandparents were never aware of the connection. It was only after their deaths that during a visit of the in-laws this was proven."
