1. WILLIAM HARRISON3 JOPES (SAMUEL H.2, HACKY B1) was born February 01, 1835 in Gallatin, TN, and died
April 09, 1907 in Greenfield, MO. He married CATHARINE ELIZABETH BOWLES September
11, 1855 in
Greenfield, MO, daughter of SAMUEL BOWLES and ELIZABETH JANES. She was
born February 02, 1835 in
Murfreesboro, TN, and died June 21, 1922 in

Notes for WILLIAM
HARRISON
JOPES:
Moved from Gallatin, TN in 1839 at age four to
Springfield and in 1853 moved to Greenfield MO. He moved his
family back to Springfield for two years during the
Civil War. He joined the Missouri State Guard there and
served in the medical corp as a surgeon, a
"trade" he had learned from his father-in-law Dr. Sam Bowles. He was
captured at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August
10, 1861. The Union forces kept him locked up at night
so he wouldn't escape and then had him attend to their
sick and wounded during the day.
He returned to Greenfield and practiced medicine and
owned a drug store.
It has been reported that he made up a special
perscription that he dispursed to his close friends after 5 P.M. and
on fishing trips.
From the Greene County Atlas we obtain the following
sketch of life of Wm. B. Farmer: "Judge Farmer has had
an honorable career as a citizen of Greene county:
For two or three years, however, he was a silent partner
in a drug store with Wm. H. Jopes, but the business was
terminated on the breaking out of the war of the
rebellion. (I believe this store was in Greenfield, WHJ III)

Chico Enterprise Record
July 9 1886
At the residence of Washinton Broyles, near Cana, July
6, Miss Laura E. Jopes. She was the daughter of
Doctor W.H. and K.E. Jopes, of Greenfield, Dade county
Missouri. Was born July, 1856 and was at the time
of her death nearly thirty years old. She left her home
in Missouri April 7th, to visit her relatives in
California, and was taken sick some two months ago at
the residence of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs.
Broyles, where she died. She embraced Christ as her
Saviour, and united with the M.E. Church in her native
town at the age of fourteen years, in which connection
she lived as a faithful Christian girl to the day of her
death. Her mother was with her at the last moments, and
the loving father, two sisters and a brother are to
learn the sad news in Missouri. The funeral ceremonies
were conducted by Rev. J.E. Barnes, pastor of the
First Baptist Church in Chico, yesterday, at the place
of her death, and a large number of sympathizing
friends, together with the relatives, followed the
remains to the cemetery near by. And laid them away to await
the resurrection trumpet sound.
Note: Cana is 19 miles north of Chico just south of the
Tehama Co. line. Laura's uncle, Washington Broyles
raised cattle and farmed there on several hundred
acres. Laura was buried on the home property and was the
first one to be buried there which is now known as Pine
Creek Cemetery on Broyles Rd.
The inscription on her tombstone says:

Notes for WILLIAM
HARRISON
JOPES
II:
Became engaged to Anna Rawhauser in high school. They
were childhood sweethearts and remained sweethearts
until death did them apart. From pressures at home,
they each tried to continue their education. Anna went to
Kansas City to become an RN and Harrison was sent to
University of MO to study medicine. Harrison never
stood a chance, he had unsteady hands and could not
stand the sight of blood. He came back to Greenfield and
tought grade school one year. He missed his love and
went to Kansas City and went to work for John Deere.
They were married just before Anna was to get her
degree. They moved to California in 1920. Harrison spent his
career in the Farm Machinery Business, mostly
wholesale. They enjoyed life in spite of the economic hardships
they endured during their lifetime. Like so many
others during that time, the depression came during their
supposedly accumulative years and left them without
much of a chance build any equity.
They did make friends though, at each funeral there
was SRO.
