Notes for David D STOCKTON:
RESIDED: Came to Greene Co, MO in 1833 with several
other Stockton's, all of whom helped organize Polk County in 1835.
PUBLIC SVC; Elected and served
a two year term as Sheriff of the county 1844-1846. After being released from the Army due to his
injuries, he was elected and served one term in the State Legislature from
1864-1866.
MILITARY: Served during 2 wars.
1. Mexican War:
Two companies were formed, the second, Company K, was organized 12 Jun 1847 under Captain B. F. Smithton, succeeded
shortly thereafter by Captain David D. Stockton, who remained its commander
until the company was disbanded. They formed a part of Col. Ralls' 3rd Missouri
Regiment of the Mounted Volunteer Cavalry.
They marched to Santa
Fe, New Mexico, where they were stationed for the duration of the
war, and were not engaged in any battles of that war. They did have several
engagements and skirmishes with hostile Indians, and foraging parties of the
enemy. At the battle of Wagon Mound one man was killed and three wounded. David was mustered out in Oct 1848.
2. Civil War:
Enlisted as Captain in Union Army for service in Civil War. Placed in charge of Stockton's Company in the Mounted Missouri Militia, later
changed to Company A, 8th Regt., Missouri Militia
Cavalry. Sent to Pittsburg, KS to protect companies being
recruited for servcie. fought in the skirmish at Humansville, MO between 20 Mar and 26 Mar 1862, just a few miles from his home. Wounded on the 25th by a
rifle ball just below the knee, breaking his leg. First sent home to recover,
then to Jefferson City. Assigned to
Provost Marshall duty 24 Dec 1862 but problems with his wound forced him to resign his
commission 25 Apr 1862. He was not officially mustered
out of the Army until 25 Jun 1865.

Notes for Mary Lavina Polly HALL:
FAMILY: Emily (Stockton) Chaney told this story about her mother Mary Hall to
her granddaughter. As a young girl, she
was kidnapped from her parents in a European Country and brought to America by the Captain of a Dutch Trading Vessel. When they landed the girl refused to marry
her abductor, so he "bound her out" to work for wages in a New England family, collecting her earnings to pay her passage across the Atlantic. Eventually she earned her
freedom from bondage and married David D Stockton. So far as her descendants
can remember, she never contacted her own people in Europe,
so nothing is known of her origin. (No
explanation is giving on how she got to Tennessee where she met and married David Stockton).
RESIDED: Mary was living at Bolivar, Polk,
MO on 24 May 1887, having moved there seven years after her husband died.
BURIAL: Wann Family Cemetery, Lawrence County, MO. Her tombstone
reads 1815 for her date of birth.

HADLOCK:
RESIDED: Took his family to Oregon by covered wagon in the early 1870's, joining his
brother George. He did not like Oregon, and soon returned to Missouri. Census records
supports this, showing son Nova born in Halfway, MO in 1872, daughter Mary
Elizabeth born in Idaho in 1875, and daughter Naomi Belle born in Halfway in
1877.
DEATH: Nothing has been found on his death, and
neither he nor his wife were buried in any of the Hadlock cemeteries in the area. Some say he or his wife died from
tuberculosis and may have removed to a larger city or sanitarium for
treatment. His wife died in 1890, after
which their children were sent to live with relatives rather than staying with
the father.

night. After about a week when his
mother took them food, they were gone.
No bodies were ever found.

RESIDED: He was the only son of Clayton who did not
settle in Missouri. He remained
in Meigs County until after 1840, and after living in Missouri for a short while, removed to Rusk County, Texas sometime before 1850. He live in Boone County, Arkansas for a while after the war, then apparently returned
to Texas.
TRIAL: Arrested and arrainged
for the murder of Zachariah Harrel in Smith Co, TX on
23
Oct 1855. He was released on bail put up by Giles Boggess (probably his father-in-law). He was found not guilty on 2 Jun 1856 and after that returned to McMinn Co, TN.
MILITARY: Served in the 1st Tennessee Calvary during
the Civil War, fighting at Chickamauga
and Tunnell Hill,
Georgia. He was part
of the retreat from Dalton to Atlanta with Ashby's Bridgade.
