The Descendants of the Rev. William Levander Burnett

Revised 10/29/07

First Generation

      1. William Levander Burnett, Sr., was born on 25 Nov 1822 in Grainger Co. TN.  He died on 13 Jul 1905 in Lockwood, Dade Co. MO, and was buried in Collins Cemetery, Dade Co. MO.  The names of his parents and the surname of his first wife, Louisa D. A. (Burnett), are unknown.  He moved with Louisa to Ozark Co. MO in 1855.  Louisa died in 1863, and William and his second wife, Anna Gentry Watkins Burnett, moved to Dade Co. MO in 1868.

From the Lockwood newspaper:

"The death angel has again visited the earth and taken away one of our beloved in the person of W.L. Burnett, who was born in Grainger county, Tennessee, November 25, 1822.  He moved from Tennessee to Ozark County, this state (Missouri) 1855, has been in Dade County, Missouri for 37 years.

"As  a citizen he has been noble and true hearted.  He stood for stars and stripes in the 1860's and has ever had the threads of our National Banner twined about his heart.  When we lose such a man as Brother Burnett we lose a citizen and patriot.  His life of true citizenship is and will be missed among us.  A shrewd mind, gray hairs, and a true heart are necessary to good government.  These we have lost in our deceased and time honored father.

"For near forty years he preached the gospel which is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.  In his early ministry he often rode forty miles to deliver his sermon to anxious crowds.  This bespeaks the crowds current of his heart and life.  There was a propelling power in him which was greater than himself.  This power was, love to God and love for lost souls.  It would be well if all men had these characteristics, for then we would be good citizens, good companies, and great benefactors.  He who has a good heart as did our brother is a jewel on earth.  But when the Lord says enough, the small and the great the rich and the poor must lay down their life to take it up again in the morning.  This our dear brother did at 9 o'clock, Thursday evening July 13, 1905 and was received among the nobility of heaven to suffer pain, heartache or sickness no more.  May the blessings of the Lord be upon his dear companion who is almost ready to join him in the happy land, also upon the children who are mourning an irretrievable loss."

From Audrey Watson Brown of the Missouri Genealogical Society and a Burnett cousin:

"The Burnetts of Dade County, Missouri"

"William Levander Burnett, Jr. and Joseph Calvin Burnett were both born in Tennessee.  They moved to Ozark County, Missouri with their parents in 1855.  In 1868 they moved to Dade county, Missouri, with their father, Reverend William L. Burnett, Sr., and step-mother, Annie Gentry Watkins Burnett.  Levander, as he was called by family and friends, traded his share of the lead for a farm northeast of Lockwood, Missouri.  Where he lived until his death in 1892, from a lung ailment which he developed in the Civil War.  He is buried in Collins Cemetery, northeast of Lockwood, Dade County, Missouri.  His widow, Elvira Divine Burnett, stayed on the farm and raised their six children.  Elvira lived on the farm until her death in 1930.  Joseph Calvin married Mary A. Weatherbee in 1877 and they ended up in Seneca, Missouri, where, I am told, they owned and operated their own grocery store, until they got up in years and went to live with their daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Burnett Stoner, in Wyandotte, Oklahoma.  It is believed that they are buried around the Wyandotte and Miami, Oklahoma area.  The above information was from their great grand-daughter, Mrs. Bonnie Stoner Newman."

The muster roll record for 26 MO Infantry lists William L.  Burnett:  private; company H; age 18; height 6' 1/2"; brown hair; blue eyes; fair complexion; single; farmer; born in Marion county, Tennessee; residing at Medora, Osage county, Missouri at time of enlistment on Oct. 10, 1862; mustered in on Oct. 27, 1862 at St. Louis, Missouri by Col. Bonneville; Discharged Mar. 13, 1863 Keokuk Iowa by order of 1st Lt. Chas. Balin Military Commander. His brother Francis Marion also joined the same unit.  Levander was discharged from service on March 13, 1863.  The cause of discharge was listed as incipient tuberculosis and general debility.

From his affidavit in his pension claim:  "Lockwood, Dade Co. Mo., March 28, 1889.  I will proceed as best I can to give you my history as regards my pension claim. . . In the first place I was in the home guards which were in the service of the United States under Capt. John F. F. Koops.  I was sound and healthy as any one then could be.  Shortly after we were disbanded I enlisted in the U. S. Service as a volunteer under John F. F. Koops Co. H 26 Mo. Infantry volunteers in the Fall of sixty one.  Cannot give exact date as my discharges are lost.  I done my duty as a soldier until in the winter of 1861 and 62 when I took the measles and was taken to the Hospital at Medora sometimes then called St. Auburt but who treated me I cannot say for certain as I was so bad off with measles that I do not remember any thing that passed at that time.  The measles settled in my head and lung causing partial deafness and affecting my lung from which I never have recovered.  My Post Office Address when I enlisted in the 26 Mo. was Bayley's Creek.  We went from Medora to Franklin Station Franklin Co. Mo how long we was there I cannot say.  I was still unable for duty and who treated me I cannot say.  From the above named place we went to St. Louis and from there to Birds Point and from there to Charleston Mo. where I was discharged the first time from the U. S. Service April 18th 1862.  So says Surgeon I. S. Prout our Regimental Surgeon who discharged me to the best of my recollection I was not able to perform any or did not perform any duty in any way from the time I had the measles up to this time.  At home I lingered along until in the Summer of 1862 when I got so that I could help my father some in his tobacco patch.  The next work that I tried to do was on the railroad in Petis Co. Mo. at Dresden, could not stand it long so I went back home and got so that I thought I could stand the Service again so I tried it again as it was safer in the Army than here at home in Mo. at that time.  Cannot give date of my second enlistment.  I enlisted at St. Louis Mo. the second time and joined my old Co. H. 26 Mo. Inf. Vols at Corrinth Miss. and continued with them until I went to Oxford Miss where I again took down from the effects of my old disease measles and was treated by our Regt surgeon I. Sprout and from here I was sent to Memphis Tenn and there treated in a Hospital but cannot say who by and from here was sent to Keokuk Iowa to the Medical College which was converted into a hospital.  I do not know how long I staid in this hospital from this hospital I was transferred to another hospital in which my brother Francis M. Burnett sick with measles where he died and where I was treated and discharged but cannot give the names of the surgeons or numbers of hospitals or date of discharge as the same is lost.  From this place I went to fathers in Osage Co. Mo. where I staid and helped father on the farm what I could until in the summer of sixty-four when I again joined the Co. F. inf vols and served as duty sergeant until in the winter of sixty-five when I took sick with an unusual cough. . . until I was discharged at Benton Barracks Mo. in June 29 1865 and this cough continued until I went to the Rocky Mountains where I was partially relieved and felt better than I had for years.  I felt so much better that I thought I was all right.  This was in sixty seven and sixty-eight.  So I concluded to go back to Osage Co. Mo. and did so only to suffer again with my old disease measles in sixty eight. . . When I came back from the Rocky Mountains I helped my brother-in-law tend a little crop of corn and then I helped a German by the name of Miller tend a small crop of corn in the year of 1870. In 1871 I removed from Osage Co. Mo. to Dade Co. Mo. where I got married Sept. 28 and resided here ever since in this count following the occupations of farming and mining when able. . . . I have spent all my living trying to get well and at present totally unable to do any thing.  This is all true.  This is about all that I can give you. . . ."  Elsewhere in his pension files he states that he lived "from 1865 to 1867 in Osage Co. Mo., Chamois Post Office, from 1867 to 1868 on the Plains and among the Rocky Mountains, from 1868 to 1871 in Osage Co. Mo. Morrison Station P.O., from Osage co. Mo. to Dade co. Mo. in 1871 and have resided here ever since."

On Sept. 1, 1864, Levander enlisted in the 48 MO Infantry, Co. F, at Rolla, MO.  Again he is listed as born in Marion County, TN, a farmer, 20 years old, grey eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, six feet one inch.  He served in Company B, and was mustered out on June 29, 1865, at Benton Barracks, with the rank of sergeant, with service also in the home guards for three months and eighteen days.

From "Genealogy of the Divine Family," by Carl E. Calmer:  "William Levander Burnett was born about 1844.  He was a miner and staked a claim near Lockwood, Mo. and dug up a piece of lead, the size of a kitchen range, traded it for a rocky farm, where he and Elvira raised a family of six children.  They lived on this farm, the rest of their lives."

William married Elvira Divine, daughter of William Riley Divine and Amelia Webb, in 1871 in Dade Co. MO.  Elvira was born on 14 Dec 1844 in Monroe Co. TN.  She died on 19 Oct 1931 in Dade Co. MO, and was buried on 20 Oct 1931 in Collins Cemetery, Dade Co. MO.

From the Lockwood newspaper:

"Elvira Divine was born December 12, 1844, she departed this life October 19, 1931.  She was 86 years, 10 month and seven days at the time of her passing.  She was the daughter of Millie and William Divine.  She came to this vicinity from Tennessee when twelve years of age and lived here the remainder of her life.  She was converted at the age of 18 years and joined the Baptist Church.  She was a member of Mt. Nebo church at the time of her passing.  She was married to Levander Burnett in 1871.  He precedes her in death 41 years ago.  To this union were born six children.  One son James, died at the age of sixteen.  Those living are Charles and Horace Burnett and Mrs. Sarah Lasater of Lockwood, Mo.; Mrs. Millie Watson of Greenfield, Mo.; and Mrs. Myrtle Calmer of Madison, Nebraska; also three brothers and sisters.  She leaves 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.  Funeral services were held at the family home two and one-half miles northeast of Lockwood, Tuesday afternoon October 20th.  The sermon was delivered by Rev. Oz Palmer.  Burial was at Collins Cemetery."

The story was that Franklin lost a good deal of money in a showboat venture [which] sank.  [A relative’s] recollection was that the name of the showboat was the Palace.  I found a reference to the Palace showboat and that it traveled the Ohio River in the later 1800s and later sank."

From Family Report, "Descendants of Mr. Burnett," a letter to Jo Preston from a granddaughter of Martha Melissa Burnett McMellan:

"I was not quite 3 years old when Mom took me (to) Grandma Mac's house.  There were several people there (relatives) and I wandered into the east back room where an old weak and feeble man was sitting in a low rocker.  I was fascinated with the cane he held in his lap and the wooden carved clock on the shelf.  He talked to me about the loud ticking it made.  Mom came looking for me - she told him I was her child and explained to me that he was her father.  He was so old looking -- I still picture him clearly.  When he smiled at me I noticed he had tobacco stain on his chin and teeth, but it was a gentle smile and his eyes crinkled in a friendly way.  Mom told me he was resting and we shouldn't bother him any longer.  That was the only time I remember seeing Grandpa William Wesley, so I am thankful for the memory.

"When I was 4 yrs. old, Mom and I took a birthday gift by the Burnett's house on the way to Grandma Mac's.  There were a good many people there and Aunt Maggie Elder was the only one I knew.  Mom introduced me to a man with snow white hair and a full white beard.  She said he was her Uncle Joe.  I said he looked like Santa Claus and everyone laughed at me . . . it was his birthday they were celebrating.  Mom introduced me to another person sitting nearby.  She said he was her cousin Dan.  He was a fat man with large ankles and his shoe laces were loose.  He said he was troubled with swollen feet and had a cane to help him walk.  He had brown high-top workshoes (leave it to a kid to notice they were untied).  We didn't stay long as they were getting ready to have dinner and we were due at Grandma's.  I don't know why she was not at the celebration since she was his sister -- Mom didn't explain.  That was the only time I saw Uncle Joe and Dan."

He met and married a young lady from the same county.  Nancy Catherine Griffith was the daughter of Augustus Griffith and Henrietta Buchanan.  They were married at the home of her parents in Everton, Missouri.  Nancy [C]atherine was born 22 February 1899.  They married in very perilous times -- this was the years of World War I and Clarence was in the military service from 17 September 1917 to 10 June 1919.  The year after his discharge their first child was born. During these years Clarence played the fiddle and sang with his brothers.  There was quite a demand for their talents at community get togethers.  Sometime after 1923, Clarence moved his family to Arizona."

From the memoirs of Marcella Burnett, Clarence and Catherine Burnett's daughter:  "My mother and father decided to come to Phoenix, Arizona when the climate seemed to fit what would benefit my father.  My mother's brother, Cam, had lived in Phoenix since the end of World War I. . . . We left in a Model T coupe. . . . At last after two weeks we arrived in Phoenix. . . . It must have been a difficult decision to leave Everton because in those days distances seemed so much greater.  My father saw his mother for the last time.  My mother did not see her mother for eleven years.  My father did not see his father for over thirty years."
