The Descendants of James Hilliard Buchanan

First Generation

      1. James Hilliard Buchanan was born on 12 Nov 1811 in Granville Co. NC, the son of James A. Buchanan and Elizabeth Weathers.  He died on 16 Dec 1893 in Dade Co. MO, and was buried in Collins Cemetery, Dade Co. MO.

Three of James Hilliard Buchanan's sons, Theophilus, Brementus, and George, enlisted in the Army at the time of the Civil War, Theophilus as a Confederate and Brementus and George as Union soldiers.  All three were involved in the Battle of Prairie Grove, near Fayetteville, Arkansas.  Theophilus was killed, George was wounded, and Brementus transferred to hospital duty in Fayetteville, perhaps to help care for George.  A fourth son, James Alonzo, served in the Union 2nd St. Mil. Cav. Co. F.  This is probably the unit described by J. W. Carmack in "History of Dade County and Her People" as a militia organized to defend Greenfield from Gen. Sterling Price's "Raiders."  A son-in-law, Burton A. Pyle, who married James H. Buchanan’s daughter Margaret Priscilla in 1866, served in the 6 Mo. Cavalry, the same unit in which Brementus and George served.

Obituary from an unidentified newspaper:

"James Hilliard Buchanan.  'Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep/From which none e'er will rise to weep.'

"Mr. James H. Buchanan closed his eyes in that sweet sleep at his home five miles north of Lockwood on the 16th ult.

"Mr. Buchanan had passed his 82nd year.  He was born in North Carolina Nov. 12th, 1811, joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church early in life and lived a good christian member until God called him from this world to the general assembly of the first born.

"Mr. Buchanan was a true and devoted father, a loving husband and a kind neighbor.  All who knew him respected him.  When he felt that the message from his Lord was coming he said that he was ready to go.  He lived not for self, but to make others happy and this gave him peace and happiness to do his Lord's will.

"On the 17th of December Rev. W. R. Russell preached the funeral at his home to a large and bereaved congregation, after which the remains were conveyed to the McBride cemetery and laid away.  Mr. Buchanan was married to Miss Rosa Clopton in North Carolina in 1833 and moved to western Tennessee in 1838 and in 1852 they came to Dade county Mo., where he lived until death.  There were ten children born to grace this happy home, five of whom with their mother have passed 'through the valley of the shadow of death' before him.  Mr. Buchanan re-married and leaves a wife and five children with a host of relatives and friends to mourn, but our momentary sorrow is his eternal joy in our 'Father's house.'

"Mr. Buchanan has long been a member of the Washington lodge No. 89, A. F. & A. M. of which he was a consistent member until the last few years of his life, when he was not able to attend the meetings of the lodge on account of his age and health."

Obituary dated 19 Mar 1942, name of paper not given.

"Mrs. Henrietta Griffith.  Henrietta, daughter of B.L. and Nancy Catherine Buchanan, was born October 19, 1867, in Dade County, near Dadeville, Missouri.  She departed this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Matha Funk in Everton, Missouri, on March 8, 1942, having reached the age of 74 years, 4 months, and 9 days.  She was united in marriage to Oliver Augustus Griffith on December 22, 1887.  Nine children were born to this union, three of whom, together with the husband, preceded her in death.  The six remaining children are, Mrs. Matha Funk and Mrs. Elbert Jones of Everton, Mo.; Cam and Mrs. Clarence Burnett, of Phoenix, Arizona; Hugh of Dickinson, Texas; Elmer of Joplin, Missouri.  She is also survived by one brother, Dr. W.E. Buchanan of Eugene, Oregon, one sister, Mrs. Ad. V. Copperedge of Grove, Okla., and seven grandchildren.

"She was converted and united with the Hampton church when a young woman.  She was a faithful, loving Christian wife, mother, and grandmother.

"She suffered a paralytic stroke at her home in Everton on July 27th, however, she recovered use of her limbs and was able to walk about the house.  Then on February 2nd, she suffered a second stroke and was confined to her bed until death came quietly at 7:18 on Sunday evening.  Everything was done for her comfort and care that loving hands could do and she left behind her a community enriched by her long useful life.  Her faith in God was undimmed amid all her struggles.  She was tireless, zealous in her tender care to her family and friends.  One of the sweetest spirited Christian women to be found in our midst.  Truly it might be said of her, that her children rise up to call her blessed as neighbor and friend, she leaves to us an unbroken record of kindness, gentleness, that truly reflected the spirit of her Savior.

"Funeral services were conducted from the Hampton church Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. by the Rev. Tom Procter of Greenfield, with burial in the Hampton cemetery under direction of the Erwin & Dinwiddie Funeral Home of Dadeville."

Obituary from an unidentified newspaper:

"Laura Freeze Buchanan.  In Memoriam.  'We see but dimly through/The mists and vapors/Among these earthly damps,/What seems to us but sad funeral tapers/May be Heaven's distant lamps.' Laura Buchanan died at Bona, Missouri, May 12, 1898, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Freeze, 19 years.  She leaves a mother, father, sister, and brother, to mourn her loss, besides a host of relatives and friends.  It seems so hard for one so young and full of hope to give up the beauties of this life and the society of loved ones and go to the tomb, but she surrendered all without a murmur.

"Thy will be done seemed to be her guiding star.  It is almost too hard for human nature to bear to give up a cherished object like this.

"Yet if we could but look beyond and realize that Laura is so much better off; that she is now released from all the sorrows of this life and has enetered upon an eternity of peace and happiness beyond our comprehension.  Her voice is hushed in death.  The bright and loved one is gone.  Lovely in life beautiful in death.  She is but called from the trials of this life to the beautiful land beyond; the home is made desolate for the want of a daughter and sister.

"A flower broken, faded, gone.  May this be a warning as well as an example.  So be prepared to meet God, for death comes to the old and young alike.  May those who mourn for the dear one. . . . " [the rest of the clipping is missing.]"
