Family of Elias Ruffin Hughes
Generation #1:
- William Hughes was born in
1750. His parentage is unknown at
this time. He has been listed as born in Kentucky but this might be
conjecture. He married Mary Sampson (born 1748 in Kentucky) about 1769 in Kentucky. The William Hughes family
resided during the American Revolution in Virginia
and Kentucky. He assisted in establishing American
Independence while acting in the capacity of Private, Sergeant, and
Captain in Colonel Thornton’s Virginia Regiment (DAR application of Hannah
Collier of 3/31/92). The couple both died in Lincoln County, Kentucky:
William, Sr. on November
14, 1834 and Mary 11 years later
(October 19, 1845).
Their 14 children were all born in Lincoln County, Kentucky. The children were:

Generation # 2:
- Reuben H. Hughes was the second
son of William and Mary Hughes, born in 1772 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. He married Mary Dean (born 1/2/1791)
in about 1805 in Kentucky. Reuben and Mary moved to Benton County, Missouri
in the 1830s. Reuben died in 1842
at Warsaw, in Benton County. Mary died September 7, 1870 and is buried at the Hughes Cemetery
near Windsor, in Henry, County, Missouri.
Their 4 children were all born in Kentucky
(Mercer County),
before their move to Missouri.

(b-8/13/1807) married 5 times with Mary Gray his first wife.
3.
Richard Hughes reportedly moved to Texas and lost touch
with the family.

William O. Hughes (b-1830) married Mary from Indiana and moved to Cooke County, Texas.
Generation #3:
- Elias Hughes, who was born about
1805 in Kentucky, arrived in Benton County, Missouri
with his family in about 1833 settling on Little Tebo
Creek. He married Susannah Horner (b-10/22/1807) on December 28, 1841. She had moved to Benton
County, Missouri with her
sister’s family (Mrs. John B. Clark) from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Elias died in Benton County
on July 14, 1844
after only 3 years of marriage and when his second son was only a month old. Susannah and her two sons, along with the
John B. Clark family moved to near Dadeville, in Dade County, Missouri
around 1852. By the 1860 census, Susannah’s
niece’s family (Mrs.Theodore Switzelar) were also living in Dade County. Susannah (Horner) Hughes
died January 28, 1892
in Springfield, Missouri at the home of her sister (as
reported by the Greenfield Vedette).
Elias and Susannah Hughes’ 2 children were born in Benton County, Missouri.

Amanda Finley (b-1847, in
Kentucky), served in the Civil War, died March 8, 1880.

Generation # 4:

Elias
Ruffin Hughes, who was born June
7, 1844 in Benton County, Missouri, came to Dade County
around 1852 with his mother, brother, and aunt’s family. He served as a Private and Artificer (perhaps
blacksmith) in Captain William A Kirby’s Company A, 6th Missouri
Cavalry, Union Army during the Civil War.
He married Eliza Caroline Pemberton (b-3/3/1849 in Dade County)
on April 15, 1869. She was the daughter of Henry Harrison and
Eliza Jane (Campbell)
Pemberton. Her father, Henry, and his
two brothers, John Sharp and Elkanah Pemberton had
come to Dade County
in the 1830s from Tennessee. Her father built and operated a mill on the
Sac River-first known as the Pemberton Mill and later known as the Hulston Mill. Eliza
Caroline’s mother’s family, the Campbells,
were early settlers in Polk and Greene Counties.
Elias Ruffin Hughes was a township
revenue collector for Dade
County for the years
1880-1886. He and his uncle, John Clark,
partly owned a general store in Dadeville. “Morris, Clark, and Hughes.” Morris withdrew and Clark and Hughes moved
the store to Everton. Eliza Carolina
Pemberton, his wife, owned land around the Hulston
Mill including lead and zinc mines.
Elias R. Hughes died December 4, 1893 leaving Eliza Caroline to live 26
more years before she died on February 25, 1920.
Their 4 children were all born in Dade County, Missouri.

Fanny Love Hughes (b-5/27/1872) became a 2nd
grade teacher in Dade
County but died at the
age of 21 on November 27,
1893.

R. Campbell Hughes (b-4/9/1874) died at the age
of 36 on April 21, 1910.

Henry
Pemberton Hughes (b-9/5/1877) the fifth generation.
4.
Ralph J. Hughes (b-7/10/1885) moved to California, married Ruby, had no living children, and
died in January 1962 in San Diego.
Generation #5:

Henry
Pemberton Hughes was born September
5, 1877 in Dade
County living there most
of his life. However, he did meet his wife, Elizabeth Webb, in New
York City and married her there on June 23, 1906. Elizabeth Webb was born on September 6, 1885 in Liverpool,
England and immigrated to New York about 1892 when
she was 7 years old. After their marriage, they lived in St. Louis about a year where Henry was a
street car conductor and their first child was born. They then lived in San
Francisco (where Elizabeth’s
brother lived) for about 4 years. While
living there, Henry worked as a salesman and their next 2 children were
born. The family returned to Dade County
around 1912 living on Henry’s mother’s property near Hulston
Mill. There Henry was in the grocery
business until about 1926. The rest of their children were born here. Henry then served as Everton Postmaster from 1928-1932
moving his family to Everton. He served
as Dade County Circuit Clerk and Recorder to Deeds from 1939-1947 moving his
family to Greenfield. He died August 11, 1951 of a stroke. Elizabeth
lived with her daughter, Carolyn, about 15 more years, dying in Springfield, Missouri
on March 5, 1966. They are buried in the Greenfield Cemetery.

Love Hughes (b-4/17/1907) married Lee A. Kirby (b-6/15/1899) from Dadeville
on May 10, 1925.
The moved to Visalia, California in about 1942. Lee died 3/2/1973 and Fanny 2/18/1996.Their children

Ralph Hughes (b-1/1/1908 in San
Francisco, died-7/8/1909).

Campbell (Cam) Hughes (b-3/21//1910 in San Francisco),
moved to Skidmore, Missouri, married Nellie Cagle and Ruth Kempf, no children.

Virginia (Gin) Lucille Hughes (b-2/5/1912), married Samuel W. Burton from Everton on December 25, 1931. They
lived in various places in Missouri as well as
Parsons, Kansas; Dallas
and Jasper, Texas. Sam died 7/25/87 and soon after Gin moved
back to Greenfield
dying 2/8/2005. Their living child is:

from 1951-1987 as well as farming at Hulston and
South
Greenfield.
