The History of St. John's Lutheran Church, Schubert, Missouri

FOREWORD

Last summer I took a daytrip to Schubert to explore a few cemeteries where I was sure some of my ancestors were buried. About five miles east of Jefferson City, we turned onto the exit towards Osage City where we saw a rummage sale sign for St. John's Lutheran Church. Since there was something of interest for both my husband and I (he the rummage sale, myself the cemetery) we pulled in. I went straight for the cemetery starting in the first row up front and within the first ten tombstones found my gg-grandfather Paul Goser. Excitedly I ran over to the other side of the church where the rummage sale was to let my husband know we hadn't made this trip for nothing (it's happened before) and found him speaking with Reverend Scheperle. I threw some family names at him, which he was familiar with, and then he proceeded to take us into the old parsonage where he handed me a booklet called "A Century of Grace, 1869-1969" including photos and some typewritten pages titled "A History of St. John's Lutheran Church, Schubert".

Since becoming involved with the Cole County GenWeb I thought that these publications would be of interest to anyone researching their ancestors from Cole County due to the family names mentioned and the history of the area in general. Reverend Scheperle has so graciously given his permission to publish the history of St. John's Lutheran Church on these pages. Note that I have only included the history up until 1921 so as to respect the privacy of those still living.
