Mt. Gilead
Cemetery
This cemetery is located in the
north central part of Clay county, Missouri. It is
about in the center of the north side of the
northwest quarter of Sec. 29, Township 53, N. Range
31 W. along the west side of the county road. It is 2
3/4 miles west of the town of Kearney, Missouri on
State Hwy. 92, and one mile north. This cemetery is
associated with the Mt. Gilead Community Church which
was first organized in 1830 and is still in use. A
two-story school building which was used for many
years is still standing on the grounds. The cemetery
was indexed in 1964 by Kermit B. Karns. Many graves
are unmarked. The names obtained have been indexed
into the genealogical name card catalog in the Kansas
City Public Library.

The Mt. Gilead Church with which the cemetery is
associated was organized Feb. 13, 1830, as a
Primitive Baptist Church at the home of Benjamin W.
Riley who became the first pastor. The present
grounds were selected in 1833 by Timothy R. Dale,
1804/1880, Alfred M. Riley 1806/1881, Henry Estes and
Benjamin Soper. The first building was erected in
1844 under the direction of Robert Officer, Alfred M.
Riley and David M. Bevins 1805/1889. The present
building was built in 1870. In 1844 the church
divided which resulted in it becoming a Christian
Church under Rev. Augustus H. F. Payne. Others who
served were such men as Moses E. Lard, Alexander
Proctor, G. W. Longan and A. B. Jones. Mr. Matt
Smith, Keaney, MO., is one of the present trustees.
He has the original church records as well as those
of the Mt. Gilead school which was used for many
years.
