Carter County sits at the Southeast corner of the Missouri Ozarks. Most of the county is within the Mark Twain National Forest. The beautiful Current River runs through the middle of Carter County. The entire Current river that runs through Carter county is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Carter County has the distinction of being one of the poorest counties in the State of Missouri. The timber industry and tourist industry are the two main sources of income for this county. Even this is not enough to raise the income level of families in the area. Carter County was organized March 10, 1859, from Oregon, Reynolds, Ripley and Shannon counties. The county was named for Zimri A. Carter, pioneer settler. The county seat is in Van Buren. If you have research resources in Carter Co., Mo, and would like to share them with others, please consider letting me post them here. Or would you volunteer to do lookups for others? If so, please let me know. Any contributions would be greatly appreciated.
