Rhoda Florence Porter was born in Owensburg, Green [Greene] County, Indiana, October 20, 1871 and died January 22, 1920, age 49 years, 3 months, 2 days. At the age of 19 she married Charley Allen of Mirable and 3 children born, all preceding her in death. In
1895 she married Harry E. Porter and 3 children were born. She leaves her mother, husband, and 3 children. Body taken to Polo, Missouri and from there to Kingston, Caldwell County, the old family home, for burial.

CHARLES D. ALLEN, d. 1894/5 We know Rhoda had three children by Charles Allen who all died before Rhoda died in 1920 and we think are buried in the Kingston, Missouri cemetery. We have photo of Rhoda and Hattie taken in 1895 with three children, one may be Bill Luther. Charles was from Mirabile, Caldwell, Missouri son of J. P. Allen. Charles and Rhoda lived south of Kingston.

Flora Ellen Emery was born March 9, 1875, near Koleen, Green [Greene] County, Indiana. She died March 23, 1949, aged 74 years and 14 days. The family moved to Pettis County, Missouri in 1879 and a year later moved to Caldwell County, where they settled permanently. When about 16 years of age she accepted Christ as her savior and united with the United Brethren Church at Hazelview. Later she placed her membership with the Christian Union Church at Bonanza, where her children were already members. May 16, 1895, she was married to Joseph Ellsworth "Hooker" Lester, who preceded her in death April 21, 1933. To this union 11 children were born, 3 sons and 1 daughter having preceded their parents in death. Those surviving are 3 sons, William Howard, of Montevallo; Charles Ellsworth of Bethany; and Jesse Edgar of Hamilton; 4 daughters, Mrs. Leonard Miller of Kingston; Mrs. Forrest Shadduck of Cameron; Mrs. Claude Fellows of Jerico Springs, and Mrs. L. W. Chase of Montevallo, also 17 grandchildren, and 1 great granddaughter, 1 sister, Mrs. Bert Palmer of Anaheim, California; at whose home she died, 2 brothers, Ben Emery of Kingston and Homer Emery of Ogallalah, Nebraska. On December 17, 1940, she married George W. Cline, Charity, who passed away August 2, 1944. Surviving are 3 stepsons, Lester, Cecil and Oral Cline.

Mrs. Cline had gone to spend the winter with her sister in California and was preparing to start home when she became ill of pneumonia. Mrs. Shadduck and Mrs. Fellows left immediately upon learning of her serious condition, but their mother had entered into rest 6 hours before their arrival.

Joseph Ellsworth Lester, son of Howard and Marietta Lester, was born August 8, 1861, in Jay County, Indiana, and departed this life April 21, 1933, age 71 years, 8 months and 13 days. At the age of 7 years, he came, with his parents, brothers and sister to Caldwell County, Missouri where he spent the remainder of his life, with the exception of 4 years of his early manhood spent in Nebraska. He was for many years a faithful member of the Hazel View United Brethern [Brethren] church. On May 16, 1895, he was married to Flora Ellen Emery, and to this union 11 children were born, 3 sons and 1 daughter preceding him in death. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, William H., Charles E., and Jesse Edgar; 4 daughters, Mrs. Leonard Miller, Mrs. Forest Shaddock, Mrs. Hope Lester and Mrs. LaVertice Chase. A sister, Mrs. E. S. Thompson, of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, also survives. Also 6 grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Charles Lester reports that his father "Hooker" purchased the 40 acres from his father's Howard Lester estate. Bill Waggoner purchased the other 40 acres. He farmed the Bill Waggoner 120 acres 1940-1944. The Hooker Lester House that burned in 1936, was moved from the South 40 to the North 40 about 1897.

Howard Lester owned the Emery 40, before purchasing the 80 acres about 1979. The house originally was located in a peach grove about 700 feet South of the location that many of us remember. -Lyndell Miller.

Tractor accident kills farmer, 76, Montevallo, Missouri. A 76 year old farmer was killed Monday in a tractor accident on his farm, about a mile South of Montevallo, in Vernon County. Authorities said the victim, William Howard Lester, was killed while on his tractor, grinding feed for his cattle. The tractor went out of control, pinning Lester between a tree and the steering wheel. Mr. Lester was born in Kingston, Missouri, April 13, 1896, and had lived near Montevallo 26 years. Mr. Lester was the son of Joseph Ellsworth and Flora Ellen Lester. Mr. Lester leaves his wife, Mrs. Genevieve Lester of the home; 2 brothers, Charles E. Lester, Manson, Washington, and Jesse E. Lester, Centerview, Missouri; 3 sisters, Mrs. Elma Shadduck, Peculiar in Cass County; Mrs. Hope Fellows, Jerico Springs, Missouri; Mrs. Bessie Chase, El Dorado Springs, Missouri; a grandson, and 2 great-grandsons. Services will be at 2:00p Friday at the Ferry Chapel, Nevada, Missouri; burial in the Kingston, Missouri Cemetery.

Mrs. Genevieve Dyer Lester, 91, of a nursing home at 1500 N. Liberty, Independence, formerly of 11305 E. 78th Terr., Raytown, Missouri, died Saturday at Research Medical Center. She was born in Jerico Springs, Missouri in 1884 and passed away March 20, 1976, and lived in that area most of her life. Mrs. Lester leaves 2 brothers, Burley Van Allen, Boonesville, Arkansas and Gary Van Allen of Eufaula, Oklahoma, 1 sister, Mrs. Mattie Mageniz, Eufaula; 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services will be at 1p Tuesday at the Carson Blue Ridge Chapel, burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Kansas City. Friends may call from 7 to 8:30p tonight at the chapel.

Mrs. Hope Fellows passed away at the Springfield Medical Center, October 11, 1976. Gladys Hope Lester, the daughter of Joseph Ellsworth and Flora Ellen Lester was born March 3, 1903 southeast of Kingston, Missouri. Mrs. Fellows moved to Cedar County in 1936. She was married to Claude Fellows October 21, 1941. Services for Mrs. Fellows, 73, of Jerico Springs, were held at 2:00p Wednesday in Jerico Springs United Methodist Church with the Reverend Frank Nickel officiating. Burial was in Brasher Cemetery under the direction of Long Funeral Home. She died at 12:15p Monday, October 11, 1976 in Medicenter in Springfield, Missouri, after a long illness. Mrs. Fellows was a member of Fairview Community Church and the Jerusalem Club and Greenridge WPFA. She had moved here from Caldwell County in 1937. Survivors include 2 sisters, Mrs. Elma Shadduck, Peculiar, and Mrs. Joy Chase of El Dorado Springs; 2 brothers, Charles Lester, Manson, Washington; Jesse Lester, Conway, Arkansas.

Claude Arthur Fellows, son of W. I. Fellows and Martha Francis Fellows was born in Chariton County, Missouri, September 30, 1884. Departed this life at his home near Jerico Springs, August 11, 1956 at the age of 71 years, 10 months, 11 days. He came with his parents to Cedar County, Missouri when about 4 years old and spent the remainder of his life here on the farm of his father except about 8 years in Oklahoma. He was converted to Christ some 30-35 years ago and was baptized by the late Reverend Porter. He was never too busy to leave his own work to go to help someone else and even when his health was failing and he was not physically able he would still go and help. He remained cheerful to the end and his deeds will be long remembered by his many friends. Surviving are his wife Hope, of the home; 2 sons and their wives, Wayne of Neosho, and Elmo of DeQueen, Arkansas; Raymond Elmo Jr., and great great-grandson Raymond Elmo III, of Bartlesville, OK. Three brothers, Lee of Nevada; Earl of Lamar, Missouri; and Lester of Milford, Missouri; three sisters, Mrs. Belle Cardwell of Stockton, Missouri; Mrs. Maud Potter of Montevallo, Missouri; and Mrs. Effie Ready of Kansas City, Missouri, and 3 nieces and 6 nephews. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00p, August 13, 1956 at the Jerico Springs Methodist Church by Rev. W. H. Jones officiating assisted by Rev. Frank Nickel.

Songs "In The Garden", "It is Well With My Soul", and "No Night There" were sung by Wanonia Skaggs, Gladys Morrison, Buenta Long, Rev. Frank Nickel, Rev. W. H. Jones. The accompanist was Mrs. Lutie Trasher; Flower bearers: Cathy Barr, Duretta Dodd, Sharen Green, Ruth Marie Walker, Eva Marie Albrect, Elaine Walker, Shirley Buck, Linda Albrect. Daughter of William and Mary Catherine Emery, was born August 2, 1876 at Bedford, Indiana and passed away at her home in Richmond, Missouri the 25th day of November 1941 at the age of 65 years, 3 months, and 23 days.

When but a small child she moved with her parents to Kingston, Missouri. On September 2, 1894, she married Arthur Adrian Luther and one son William Brown Luther was born July 8, 1895. On December 19, 1898 she was married to Alfred West who survives. She was the mother of 11 children. Three preceded her in death. Surviving are 5 sons and 3 daughters. William Luther of Kidder, Missouri. Roscoe West of Kansas City, Missouri. Robert and Ralph West of Richmond and Orville West of the home; Mrs. Robert Butler of Richmond, Mrs. Harlow Yoakum of Rayville and Mrs. Glen Estes of Richmond; two sisters Mrs. Jennie Palmer of Anaheim, California, Mrs. Flora Cline of Charity, Missouri; three brothers, Ben Emery of Kingston, John Emery of Polo, and Homer Emery of Excelsior Springs; 15 grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

At an early age she joined the Christian Union Church of Bonanza, Missouri, remaining faithful to the end.

Robert E. West, 86, of Richmond, died at 11:20a Wednesday, July 8, 1992, at the Ray County Memorial Hospital in Richmond. Mr. West was born July 29, 1905, in Taitsville, Missouri to Alfred and Mary Harriett "Hattie" Emery West. He married Lucy Ann Lay on August 1, 1930. He later married Charlene Bryant Moyer of Millville in January of 1969; she survives at the home. Mr. West was a retired farmer. He was a Protestant. He had lived a few years in Kansas City before returning to Ray county. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Bill Luther, Roscoe West and Ralph West; 4 sisters, Flora Butler and 3 who died in infancy. Other survivors include one brother, Orville West of Richmond; 2 sisters, Maggie Estes and Grace Yoakum, both of Richmond; and he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Friday, July 10, at 1:30p at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. The Rev. Kathy Morrison will officiate. Visitation will be tonight from 7-8p at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be at Richmond Gardens. Pallbearers: Dennis Estes, Gary Estes, Donald Ray Yoakum; Bob Yoakum, Everett Teegarden and Chris Berry.

Emery Rites Private: The body of Jonas Emery, 60, of 703 East Prospect St., may be viewed Friday from 9-12 a.m. at the Day Mortuary. A private burial will be held. Mr. Emery died Wednesday, May 11, at the Larimer County Hospital. He has been ill about 2 months. Kingston Paper: Funeral Here Sunday. Funeral services were held from the Kingston Christian Church, Sunday afternoon for Jonas Emery, who died 11 May 1938 in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Mrs. Jennie Palmer, 87, a native of Missouri but a resident of Anaheim 35 years, died Wednesday, August 9th, 1967 at a local hospital. She lived at 124 Harding Street. Mrs. Palmer was born February 15, 1880 in Pettis county, Missouri.

Surviving her are a daughter, Mrs. Frank Thompson, San Francisco; two sons, William Hughes, Fullerton, and Theodore Hughes, Anaheim; a brother, Homer Emery, Nebraska, seven grandchildren and six great great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00pm in Hilgenfeld Mortuary Chapel, 120 E. Broadway, Anaheim, by the Revered Walter F. Dunn. Interment will be in the family plot in Melrose Abbey Memorial Park.

Emery Hughes, the 4 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Hughes of Polo, was seriously burned Thursday of last week and died last Monday. Little Emery has been staying at the home of his grandmother, Mary C. Emery about 2 1/2 miles south of Bonanza for some time.

Last Thursday, his uncle, B. F. Emery, was out in the field burning grass with little Emery along. His uncle placed the child in the wagon and went a few steps away to light another fire. He heard the child calling him and turned to see the little fellows clothes on fire. He ran to him and tried to smother the flames with his coat. The child's lower limbs were badly burned. He lost consciousness and only revived at short intervals. Funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. Mary C. Emery. Burial at Kingston Cemetery.

Our Father hath called a loved one home. To sit beside him on the throne. From our midst little Emery was taken. But out farther is not shaken for well we know. That bye and bye we shall meet him in the sky.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon on 1:00p at the Michael Funeral Home in Brayer for Mrs. Wilbur Elliott, who passed away Monday, January 29th at the Wesley Hospital in Kansas City. Rev. Solmes, was in charge, and burial was made at the New Hope Cemetery. Anna Estella Emery was born January 12, 1882, near Bonanza, Caldwell County, Missouri. The daughter of William Ambrose and Mary Catherine (Frazier) Emery. She passed away at the Wesley Hospital in Kansas City, Monday, January 29, 1940. On December 25, 1902 she was united in marriage to Wilbur C. Elliott at the old home. The ceremony was read by Rev. C. A. B. Watson. At the age of 11 she was converted and united with the Brethern [Brethren] Church at Hazel View. In later years she transferred her membership to the Assembly of God Church in Chillicothe. To this union were born 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls. The eldest, Ethel May, departed this life on January 1, 1906, at the age of 2 years. There are left to mourn the departure of this wife and mother, her husband, Wilbur C. Elliott of near Breckenridge; J. W. Elliott of Dawn; Frank and Eula of Hamilton; Chester, Lela, and Emery of the home. Mrs. Elliott also leaves 3 brothers, John Emery of Polo; Homer Emery of Excelsior Springs and Ben Emery of Kingston; 3 sisters, Jennie Palmer of Anaheim, CA., Hattie West of Richmond; Flora Lester of Jerico Springs, Missouri, also 2 grandsons, 4 granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors and friends. A note of thanks: We wish to thank our many friends and neighbors for their kindness and sympathy extended us in the illness and death of our wife and mother. Also for the comforting words of Rev. Wilbur C. Elliott succumbed to illness at a St. Joseph Hospital, Saturday, April 18, 1964, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 10 days. He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for the past few weeks. He was admitted to the hospital, Tuesday of last week, after being cared for at the home of Mrs. Bill Howell, for about 6 weeks. Wilber G. Elliott was the son of John O. and Nancy Holder Elliott was born October 28, 1879, in Jasper County. As a young man he was married to Anna Esttla [Estella] Emery, December 25, 1902 and 7 children were born to this union. The eldest, Ethal [Ethel] May, departed this life January 1, 1906 at the age of 2 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estella, on January 29, 1940. In May, 1947, he was married to Minnie Moorshead Curnow of Breckenridge who preceded him in death October 23, 1959. Mr. Elliott was a retired farmer. He had resided in Breckenridge the past 6 years. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. Survivors include 4 sons, J. W. of Poloc, Frank of Nettleton, Chester of Cameron and Emery of St. Joseph. 2 daughters Mrs. Eule Saip of Hamilton and Mrs. Lela Snider of Braymer; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 2 nieces and 1 nephew. Rev. Donald Crawford conducted the funeral services Tuesday afternoon at the Assembly of God Church. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery.

James Chesterfield Elliott, 65, died Monday evening, May 22, at the Cameron Community Hospital. Born October 7, 1912, near Bonanza, he had been employed as a laborer in Cameron until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife, Luena Elliott.

Survivors include 2 sisters, Eula Saip of Cameron, and Lela Snider of Breckenridge, and 2 brothers, J. W. Elliott of Polo and Emery Elliott of Saint Joseph.

The funeral was held Friday at Poland Thompson Funeral Home in Cameron, with Reverend John Mepplelink officiating. Burial was in Cameron Memory Gardens

It is believed that Wallace died in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. The Excelsior Springs papers of 1921 and 1922 have vanished. Very little is know about Wallace's family other than his wife Edna McLaughlin and son, Clyde

Ben Emery, 70, died at his home Southeast of Kingston, Monday morning September 22, 1958, after a long illness. His daughter, Mrs. Dean Barnad, Mr. Barnard, and children resided with him.

Benjamin Franklin Emery, son of William A. and Mary Katherine Emery, was born August 8, 1888, near Kingston and died September 22, 1958 at his home after a long illness being at the time of his death 70 years, 1 month and 14 days. Most of his life was spent in Caldwell county where he was engaged in farming. Early in life he united with the Christian Union Church at Bonanza.

December 5, 1918, he was married to Myrtle Coshow and to this union 5 children were born; Beryl Franklin Emery, of Kansas City; Walter Harley Emery, deceased; Katherine Mayes of Kingston; Nelda Bassett of Stewartsville; and Opal Barnard of Kingston.

Also surviving are 4 grandsons, 5 granddaughters, 2 granddaughters died in infancy; 1 brother, Homer Emery of Ogallala, NE; and 1 sister, Mrs. Jennie Palmer, of Anaheim, CA.

June 27, 1940 Mrs. Emery died leaving the 5 children for him to rear. 2 years later, in 1943, a son, Harley Emery died.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 at the Christian Church conducted by Reverend Zada Jones. Burial was in the Kingston Cemetery under the direction of Clark Funeral Service.

Myrtle Mae Coshow Emery, daughter of Frank and Emma Coshow, was born May 22, 1891 in Kingston, and passed away in the Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, June 27, 1940 at the age of 49 years, 1 month, and 3 days.

She grew to womanhood in the vicinity of her birthplace, a generous and friendly young girl, who married in her youth to Benjamin Emery on December 5, 1918. To this union 5 children were born. Namely beryl Franklin, Walter Harley, Emma Katherine, Nelda Mae, and Opal Irene, all of the home that survives. Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her passing, her mother and 2 brothers, John Franklin Coshow and Walter Robert Coshow of Kingston. Her father preceded her in death 2 years ago.

Mrtle [Myrtle] was converted and united in the Christian faith during her girlhood days and continued in her faith throughout her short stay where her presence will be sadly missed in her home, in her community and by her many friends.

Everything was done to keep her on our midst that loving hands could do, but God knew best. She was an affectionate wife, a kind and loving mother and generous good neighbor.

Funeral services were held from the Kingston Christian Church, Saturday afternoon, June 29, conducted by the Reverend W. E. Barksdale. Burial was in the Kingston cemetery, in charge of the Clark Funeral Home.

Walter Harley Emery, the youngest son of Benjamin Emery and Myrtle Mae Emery, was born South of Kingston, on March 31, 1924, and came to his untimely death on August 23, 1943, at the age of 19 years, 4 months and 23 days. He was schooled and reared to young manhood in the Kingston community and grew in people's hearts so that his remarkable good health and manly strength made his tragic death so shocking to the community. At the age of 15, his pal and mother, Myrtle Mae Emery, preceded him in death, thus he shared more of the burden with his father, brother and young sisters, in keeping their home. He was a true soldier of the home front. One on whose efforts will be sadly missed in the community. Harley always did more than his part cheerfully and willingly with a smile. He leaves to mourn his passing, his father, brother Beryl Franklin Emery, third class seaman of the United States Navy; sisters, Emma Katherine, Nelda Mae and Opal Irene Emery of the home; a devoted grandmother, Mrs. Emma Coshow; several aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives besides a host of friends numbered by all who knew him. The funeral service was held from the Christian Church at Kingston Friday, August 27th, at 2:30p conducted by Rev. James Heath. The body was laid to rest in the Kingston Cemetery, under the direction of Clarks.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 31, from the Bracken Memorial Chapel in Ogallala for Homer E. Emery, 83, a resident of the Ogallala community since 1942. Mr. Emery died Saturday morning at Greeley, Colorado.

The Reverend Stanley D. Rider officiated at the services with burial in the Ogallala Cemetery.

He was born April 24, 1890 in Caldwell county, Missouri, the son of William and Mary Emery. He grew up to young manhood and received his education at the place of birth.

On September 3, 1911, he married Clora Senter at Clay Center, Kansas. The couple made their first home at Concordia, Kansas, where they remained until moving to Excelsior Springs, Missouri in 1915. They moved to Ogallala in 1942 and had been residents of this community since that time.

His wife preceded him in death in February of this year. Mr. Emery constructed and operated the Emery Motel, now known as the Midwest Motel, and was engaged in that business until his retirement in 1954.

He is survived by 2 sons, Harold of Boulder, Colorado, and Lawrence of Greely, Colorado, a daughter, Mrs. Maxine Hope of Excelsior Springs, Missouri; and by 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Mr. Emery was the last of 11 children, Bracken Mortuary was in charge of the arrangements.
