The Coleman Family
of Mobjack Bay, Virginia
Welcome to a website dedicated to the preservation of Coleman family history relating to our immigrant ancestor, Robert Coleman who settled near Mobjack Bay, Gloucester County, Virginia about 1650. Every conceivable character trait of our ancestors has become part of us. Their genes flow through our blood, and from them we have been given a strong heritage of unswerving patriotism and faith in God..
There were four Robert Colemans in early Virginia at about the same time:
Wesley D. Coleman of Friendswood, Texas administers this website. Wes is descended from Robert Coleman of Nansemond County, VA and has done a remarkable job of researching and developing his line. Wes’ website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nansemondcolemans/index.htm contains valuable and interesting Coleman information.
Information from my 1998 book "The Coleman Family of Mobjack Bay, VA" is posted below in the various links regarding our immigrant ancestor Robert Coleman, his wife Elizabeth Grizzell, and their six known surviving children. New discoveries have been made in the past few years, and new family lines have been submitted by Coleman descendants This website is a work in progress and new information will be added as it becomes available, and time permits.
More than twenty years of research have gone into this project, and the results would have been less informative without the contributions of Judge Solon B. Coleman, deceased, of Fredericksburg, VA and the numerous Coleman descendants who so willingly shared the results of their own research and family histories. The effort to preserve our Coleman history has indeed been a family project. Each one of you who contributed deserves a heartfelt thank you!
