| Research Note | Alford E. W. Benton Robbins (went by Benton), born May 26, 1863, and died May 21, 1921, a son of John Harvey Robbins and Achsah Hobson. Married Irine Manley, May 01, 1890 in Barry Co., MO. OBITUARY: Clipping from unknown Paper Following an illness of four months or more, about 100 days of which he had not been able to lie down, Benton Robbins passed away at his home in this city, Saturday morning, May 21, of leakage of the heart and a complication of troubles, at the age of 58 years lacking one week to a day. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Baptist church. Cassville Lodge I.O.O.F. No. 238, gave their funeral service at the grave. Members of this order and the M. W. A. and W. O. W. Camps were in the procession. Services at the church were conducted by Rev. T. J. Deakins. The floral offerings were very beautiful and profuse. For the past three of four months Mr. Robbins had been confined to his home nearly all the time. One week before his death he began to fail rapidly and his physicians announced that death was near. Benton Robbins was born May 28, 1863 at Wheeling, Marion County, Iowa. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Robbins who came to this county from Iowa in 1868 and located south of Cassville in the Pasley neighborhood. He grew to manhood in this community. He was educated in the Cassville School under the late Prof. N. L. Maiden. In 1887 he established himself in business in Cassville by opening the Central Barber shop which he still owned at his death and owned for the 34 years. A number of years ago he in company with the late Harry Horine and son, E. K. Horine, bought the Cassville Produce & Seed Co. and were engaged in the produce and seed business until less than one year ago when they sold the business to the Farmers’ Exchange. May 1, 1890 he was married to Miss. Irene Manley and to them two children were born, one of whom, Miss. Nadine, and wife survive him. In 1895 he was elected Mayor of Cassville and had served several terms since that time. Having lived in the county practically all of his life, having been in business here for the past 34 years and having been active in public affairs, he had a wide acquaintance all over the county. The large crowd in attendance at his funeral showed the high esteem in which he was held by a host of friends over the county. Mr. Robbins was a charter member of the M. W. A. and the Royal Neighbor Camps here. He was also a member of the W. O. W. He had been a member of Cassville Lodge I.O.O.F. No. 238 for twenty-four years. He leaves two brothers; J. A. Robbins of Verona and M. H. Robbins of Cassville and three sisters; Mrs. I. G. Gaskins of Exeter, Mrs. Joe White of Cassville and Mrs. Mary E. Grimes of Webb City. The pall bearers were; F. N. and D. G. Reese, R. E. L. Bass, Tom Poplin, Claud Hesseo and C.C. Chandler. |
