Research Note William McGuire Hurt, oldest child of John M. Hurt and Louisa M. (McGuire) Hurt, was born June 30, 1843.

He served during the war between the states in the 45th Virginia Infantry Company "A" with his younger brother Thurston Darlie Hurt. They were both captured at the Battle of Piedmont, Virginia, and were held at Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Later they were traded for Yankee prisoners. After the war, William married Mary Elizabeth Scott, a daughter of a prominent family of Cedar Bluff, Virginia. She was born in 1847, and they married November 26, 1868.

Mary owned land in Tazewell County where they lived for several years before removing to Kentucky. They moved to Johns Creek, Kentucky, where they both taught school for many years.

William traveled between Johns Creek, Kentucky, and Cedar Bluff, Virginia, area where he conducted business and visited friends and family. he spent his last years in the old soldier's home near Richmond, Virginia, where he died December 31, 1921, and is believed buried there.

William and his wife Mary were the parents of seven children as follows:
I. Albert Sidney Hurt, born October 21, 1869;
II. Erastus Franklin Hurt, born June 2, 1871;
III. Milton Scott Hurt, born March 8, 1873 in Russell County, Virginia; died at the age of 7 years;
IV. William Raleigh Garland Hurt, born November 13, 1874;
V. John Augustus Hurt born March 30, 1878;
VI. Mary Edna hurt born March 27, 1883;
VII. Lora Hurt born November 16, 1885, and died 1892 and is buried at Jones Chapel near Cedar Bluff, Virginia.
