Research Note William Floyd Hurt was born May 27, 1896, at his parents' farm in Barry County, Missouri, and was the last child born to Thurston Darlie and Louisa Hurt. He was a strong and healthy man, who helped with chores on the farm and also became a skilled carpenter.

During World War I, he served as a cook in the United States Army at Camp Lewis Washington. Later he settled in Southern California, as did his two brothers, Charles and Durward, and his sister Sally (Hurt) Ramsey.

His carpentry skills increased, and he kept busy on home building jobs. He also made good financial gains by buying rundown houses, putting them in A-1 shape, and selling them at a good profit. William K. Wrigley, the chewing gum magnate, hired William to work in the building of his world-famous estate on Catalina Island, 26 miles out of Los Angeles, California. After a time, William Wrigley approved the promotion of William Hurt to the position of head builder for all of his projects on Catalina Island. He held this position for ten years. He also worked on some freeway jobs before retiring to finish out his life in Arlington, California. He died on May 6, 1983, and was buried at Riverside, California.
