Research Note Erastus G. Hurt was the youngest child of John M. Hurt and Louisa M. (McGuire) Hurt.

He was born in Russell County, Virginia, on April 29, 1847. It is said that he had been a messenger boy for the Reb's during the Civil War.

On August 27, 1871, he married Mrs. Argiva (Balaceo) McClain in Saline City, Missouri.

They moved west to Oregon settling on the Rogue River at Agness across from Medford, Oregon, where Erastus built a cabin and mined gold for many years. When Medford was incorporated as a city in 1885, E. Hurt appeared on the Board of Trustees as the first street commissioner. In his later years, his niece Sarah (Hurt) Ramsey cared for him at her ranch in Arlington, California. Erastus even though he was getting quite old, he was still quite good with a slingshot as one of his grandnieces tells. She said that he often bagged rabbit with his slingshot, providing for the evening meal.

Erastus died of old age in 1932.
