Research Note Diana Cope added this: Regarding New Hope Church. There is also a small write up in the Butterfield book.

New Hope was established on the banks of Pogue's Creek on June 24, 1854. It is believed either Eli Pogue or John Higgs gave the land for the original Church. It is said that the first Church was built out of logs with puncheon seats and much of the work was done by slaves belonging to John Higgs. The book states there have been four buildings built on this site and that the first building was destroyed during the Civil War, as a new Church was built shortly after.

Some early charter member families were Higgs, Bowen, Hadley and Phillips. The first minister was William B. Taliferro. The first licensed preacher was Archa Higgs, a black man. The book mentions that the membership was racially mixed from the very beginning.

The church building also served as a school, John Higgs was chairman of the board of trustees for school township No. 7, District No. 2 and held this position from 1856 to 1860.
