Research Note DEDICATION SERVICE AT MERL’S CHAPEL SUNDAY

Merl’s Chapel church which was built on the J. B. Jefferson farm near Cassville four years ago, was dedicated Sunday, November 25, with special ceremonies. Rev. B. F. Brown, editor of the Freewill Baptist Gem, preached the dedication sermon at 11 o’clock, to a large crowd of people. E. A. Rumbaugh of Monett took a picture of the gathering.

The church is named for Mrs. Merl Robberson Wright, wife of W. A. Wright, who before her marriage held a successful revival meeting at the Quaker school house in that vicinity. The revival opened October 22, 1929 and continued four weeks, with 34 conversions. The church was organized with 26 charter members. Thirteen were baptized at that time. J. B. Jefferson and A. L. Blalock were appointed deacons.

On Easter Sunday the following spring, $234.50 was raised to build the church. Mrs. Elzona Medlin of near Monett suggested that the church be known as Merl’s Chapel in honor of the founder. This met the approval of everyone.

The church is out of debt, has been painted and benches and a nice piano installed. Regular services are held.

Mrs. Merl Robberson Wright is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Robberson of near Purdy and was born near the present site of Merl’s Chapel church in 1903 on what was known years ago as the Tom Robberson farm, later as the Jack Barlow farm and at present the Sime Pearce farm. She was married May 2, 1931 to W. A. Wright of Exeter.

Mrs. Wright wishes to thank everyone who helped raise the money to build the church. Contributions were received from Monett, Purdy, Cassville and other places in Barry County.
