L. F. Jones, cashier of the Citizens Bank, was overcome by heat Monday, while working in their temporary office, the vault. Lack of ventilation and the reflection of heat was the cause.

Allen Miller of Verona was in town this morning. Last week he made a trip through Barry County, and observed many improvements. Speaking of the outlook for the new crop, he said it was simply immense, much of it promising a yield of twenty to thirty-five bushels per acre, and he thinks more than the usual acreage will be harvested. - Pierce City Empire.

Mr. Templeton of Cleburn, Texas is visiting his daughter, Mrs. L. G. Brown.

Miss Alta Goodnight returned Saturday from a visit with relatives in Lawrence County.

R. E. Burkhart has a curiosity of the calf line. It has but two legs, the fore legs being missing.

Grandma Hurst of near Stillwater, I. T., is visiting the families of Mr. M. C. Sparkman of this place and other friends and relatives. She reported W. S. Hurst doing well and is pleased with the country.

Hon. C. H. Morgan returned home Saturday, after spending a short time pleasantly with Jack Morris, and genial fisherman of Kings River. Mr. Morgan's boys, Frank and Washburn enjoyed themselves hugely.

Rev. W. J. Simmons, presiding elder of Bolivar, attended quarterly conference Saturday and Sunday.

W. F. Townsend is working on the foundation for his brick.

Last Monday night, Silas Smith, wife and dog had a fight with a rat. Mr. Smith says that he come off third best as the rat bit him in the calf of the leg and heel. He danced juber and Mrs. Smith exemplified the principle of protection by mounting a chair.

Madry News: Bud Inman has gone to the territory to thresh wheat.

Madry News: Carrick Wilson has about recovered from the dose of rough on rats that he took by mistake.

Madry News: James Card will go to Monett to work in the round house as soon as he gets his wheat threshed.

Mr. and Mrs. Jas. T. Brattin, who have been visiting friends and relatives in this vicinity have returned to Pierce City.

Mrs. Mollie Claycomb, who spent the summer in Pettis County, returned home yesterday from Verona, where she visited her sister, Mrs. W. J. Ham, a few days.

Mr. and Mrs. F. M Skurlock and family of White Co., Tenn., spent Sunday with the latter's cousin, T. S. Frost. They were on their way to Texas.

Miss Augot Olsen of Roaring River, who spent the past year in Chicago and Iowa, retuned home yesterday. She is expecting her sister Miss M. W. Olsen, to return from Chicago, next week.

Mrs. May Tabor and children, who had been visiting the former's mother, Mrs. Mary Livingstone, Joined Mr. Tabor at Butler, I. T., last Saturday.

Rev. B. W. Hartley, of Roaring River, who has been holding meetings in different parts of the Indian Territory, returned home yesterday.

W. G. Wainscott of Tiff City, has been in the city this week looking after the parties who stole James Kendrick's horse.

J. E. Houghton is now the sole owner and publisher of the Mt. Vernon Telegram, having purchased the plant of J. A. Cochran, who started the paper about two and a half years ago.

Not wishing to see Barry outdone, Jerry Lee brought to our sanctions this week a potato vine with potatoes way up on its branches. Some are about the size of peanut and six inches above the ground.

L. Atkissson of Ozark was in the city Tuesday and reported that the Clay Hill school will begin Monday with James House as its principal. Mr. House has taught at that place several terms and given excellent satisfaction.

Mineral Springs News: Mrs. John Bider and Mrs. Andoe are visiting their father, Rev. Joseph Standlee at Viola.

Capt. J. A. Livingstone came up Sunday, from Elzey, I. T., for a few days' visit at home. He and his family and Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Roller, Mrs. Stattler and Miss Maggie Frazier visited Roaring River Tuesday, Mr. Livingston retuning to Elzey the same evening.

Mrs. Lary Livingstone's mother and cousin, Mrs. Stattler and Miss Maggie Frazier of Bedford Springs, Penn., arrived here last Friday. Mrs. Stattler and Miss Frazier have selected Cassville as a place of rest and quiet after two months of travel, in which they took in the World's Fair.

Bud Morgan who has been working at Everton, Mo., is spending the week at home.

Capt. Geo. R. King of Jenkins was looking after business in town Tuesday.

W. H. Sims was called home to Purdy this week, on account of a very sick baby.

Judge B. L. Evans of Pioneer accompanied his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Martin, home Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Martin are now installed in their new cottage in Pharis addition, and are settling down to living like old folks.

Mano News: Ex-Squire Meadows has his new house nearly completed.

Mano News: Sam Gillmore reports doing a good business with his little store at this place. [Research Note: Also look for "Gilmore" for this family.]

Mano News: E. Williamson has brought the G. W. Barnes place on the east fork of Eagle Creek and moved his son, Walter thereto.

Mineral Springs: A. P. Elkins is putting up a new building for the post office to be kept therein, on High Street. Silas Smith is boss carpenter.

The barn on the Felker place, near Washburn, with all its contents burned yesterday morning. There was a large amount of hay in it at the time. Aaron Roberts' boys started to go into the granary to clean it out, carrying a lighted lamp with them so that they could see how to work. In some way the oil on the outside caught fire, and fearing an explosion they threw the lamp, and the hay catching fire it was soon beyond out of control. The property belonged to Mrs. Stewart, who recently purchase it of J. M. Bayless.

Mrs. Mollie Claycomb, who has been spending the past few weeks with her father, William Talbert, went to Verona, Tuesday, where she will visit her sister, Mrs. Flora J. Ham, before leaving for her home in Pettis County. She was accompanied to Verona by Mrs. J. M. Bower and Mrs. Nettie Talbert, who will spend several days at that place.

Shell Knob News: Mrs. Perry Epperly was taken to Dr. Petty's on Rock House for treatment last week and we learn that she is dangerously ill at present, but hope that the worst is past and that she may soon return to her family in better health.

Shell Knob News: The Wormington C. A. R. post of Shell Knob will hold a camp fire, commencing Friday, Aug 2, and continuing two days. It will be held three miles south of the Knob near the Brock schoolhouse. Every body is invited to come and enjoy the occasion.

Mano News: W. J. Edie, our road boss, had his force of hands out last week repairing the roads, which was badly needed.

Mano News: Grandma Aldridge is visiting her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Powler?, this week.

Eagle Rock News: F. Larcey talks of retiring from the mercantile business and returning to his farm.

Eagle Rock News: W. H. Holman spends his nights now singing to the baby. He says he didn't know babies were so much company.

Seligman News: Miss Rodilla Vickery of Oklahoma territory, is visiting fiends here.

Sam Dotson of White River Township recently fell from a machine while in motion and the sickle nearly severed one of his hands at a little above the wrist. It is feared that he will lose the use of half the hand if not the whole.

Robert Mitts of Bates County was visiting his brother, Gilbert Mitts last week. Upon his return home he was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Mitts.

Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Griffith visited Corsicana last week and upon their return were accompanied by Miss Cora Kelley, who is visiting with friends this week.

Eldon Bare has accepted a position with Bayless & Co.

John Fishrow spent Sunday with his people at Springdale, Ark.

James Waddell of Shell Knob is assisting Manly & son this week.

Mrs. C. F. Marbut, who had been visiting on Little Flat Creek, returned here Saturday.

Eagle Rock News: Silas Ball and Sam Pryor had a set to in Fine Hollow the 4th justly in which Pryor came out second best with seven rents? cut in his shirt, one in his back and one in his right arm.

Stone's Prairie News: Daniel Edens' boy Elbert, ? wrestling, fell and broke his arm between the elbow and the wrist.

Oliver's Prairie News: Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Shoemake are the parents of a baby boy which arrive the 25th ult.

Oliver's Prairie News: Jas. McCarrol will teach the winter school at Lone Star.

Married at his residence by Andrew Harris, Esq, Aug 5th, 1893, Edward J. Tatum and Martha Tucker. May they live long and be happy.

The first day of August Tom King was overflowing as his friends and neighbors went in with well-filled baskets to remind him that it was the anniversary of his birth.

Byron Hawk got his left foot very badly mashed, last Wednesday, by the master wheel of the power to his thresher falling on it. He will be laid up for some time.

Mrs. John A. Reed will go to Lamar this week for a few week's visit with a possibility of remaining should Mr. Reed decide to move to that place.

John D. Kissee, who is at the poor house, is awaiting developments is to his sanity, is much better at present.

Miss Maud Trim of Ash Grove, who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs. Jos. Hudson, returned home Friday.

Will Wallen began teaching at the Eureka School on the line between Barry and Lawrence Monday.

Mr. Larkin and family of Garden City, Kan., arrived last week to make their future home in Cassville.

The Misses Rodecker of Pettis County, who were visiting Mrs. L. F. Jones, are spending the week in Springfield and expect to return home Saturday.

From a card from A. J. Anderson, dated Paris, Tex., Aug. 1st, we learn that he and Walter arrived there safely and are enjoying themselves amongst relatives. He adds "I like the country very well, but like all cotton countries. It is dull at this season of the year. Crops look well, but are being damaged by the dry weather that is now prevailing, and a drought is feared at this time." They returned home Tuesday.

Upon the preliminary examination of J. B. W. Bennington being called, Tuesday, he waived examination and gave bond in the sum of $40 for his appearance before the Circuit Court.

C. W. Clark of Flat Creek was pressing his claim before the county court, Tuesday, for bounty on wolf scalps which is $1.50 state and $1.50 county for each scalp. Mr. Clark discovered a wolf's den and hearing some pups whining crawled in supposing the mother to be absent! He soon found this to be a mistake, however, and backed out to get his Winchester. Again entering he killed the old wolf and eight pups. In some way the record of one is lost so he gets pay for but eight, but $24 is pretty good pay for the day. Mr. Clark has done a good work in his neighborhood by thinning out the wolves, wild cats and catamounts.

Madry News: Bud and James Greenway have returned from Texas, where they spent the summer. They say there is no place like Barry County.

Madry News: We are glad to know that Bud Inman has about recovered from his sickness.

Madry News: Mariot Hilton has his well about completed and has a fine stream of water at the depth of 120 feet.

Oliver's Prairie News: The infant child of Chas. Poore was buried the 6th at the Muncey Chapel Cemetery. [Poor]

Oliver's Prairie News: Prof. Geo. Swindle and wife will teach the school at Rocky Comfort next winter. Those who wish to attend a good school near home should attend at that place. Let us build up our home schools.

Oliver's Prairie News: Tom Sneed has sold his farm to Mr. Reed. He will move to Granby in the near future.

Oliver's Prairie News: Died infant child of Thos. and Cintha Brattin. Remains were interred in the Rocky Comfort Cemetery.

Seligman News: Miss Rodilla Vickery left Monday for Joplin where she will spend a few weeks with her grandparents, after which she will go to her home near Ingalls, O. T. [Osage Territory]

Seligman News: Rev. D. D. Ames of Avoca, Ark., preached at the Union Church, Sunday.

Washburn News: Miss Amah Stark is very sick with typhoid fever.

Washburn News: Mrs. Geo. Ferrenburg is very sick with typhoid fever, also Irva Ferrenburg with pneumonia.

Washburn News: Miss Mae Hickman entertained her young friends at home Monday night.

Washburn News: Miss Bettie Atwood of Exeter visited her brother here Monday.

F. A. Freeze who has been in Kansas for a number of months past, returned home last week for a short stay.

Mr. and Mrs. James H. Box are visiting fiends and relatives near Butterfield last week and fore part of this.

Miss Lida Paxton of Pierce City has been visiting her sister, Miss Jane Paxton, this past few days.

Al Grafford is again a citizen of Cassville after a few months absence in another part of the state.

W. H. H. Rogers of Kings Point, Mo., is visiting his old home this week.

Roland Henley got it last week where the chicken got the axe, and signing pension vouchers is a thing of the past with him. Next!

C. F. Marbut left for Jefferson City, Friday, where he will take the place of his chief, State Geologist Winslow, a few weeks, while the latter is in Chicago. In September, Mr. Marbut will be joined by Mrs. Marbut when they will start for the East, visiting in Chicago and Niagara Falls on their way. Mr. Marbut will enter Harvard College where he will pursue his studies in geology.

Otho, the 14 year old son of Rev. W. J. Simmons, who recently moved here, was thrown from a horse, Monday afternoon, breaking a bone in his left arm and throwing his right wrist out of place. Dr. Means, was immediately summoned and the sufferer is now recovering, but will be deprived of the use of either hand for some time. Marionville Republican

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Abernathy, Mr. and Mrs. James Perrine, Mrs. Florence Morton, Miss Carrie Hessee and brother Claude, comprised a party who started Tuesday for White River and Eureka Springs, on a pleasure trip.

Richard Howe of White River made a number in this town happy, Monday, by bringing in six bushels of peaches. They went soon secured by hungry mortals and many others recited Bayless & Co.'s too late to deserved.

J. W. Johnson of McMurty spring has about fourteen acres of melons that will soon be ready for market. In the meantime W. Oakes and others are doing their best to supply the demand.

The Whittington mill at Eagle Rock has passed into the hands of John L. Morton, formerly of this place. Mr. Morton is a first class miller and we hope his new venture will be a successful one.

Judge Tucker and R. G. Salyer of Golden were amongst the many residents of White River township who had urgent business in Cassville, Saturday, and had sufficient extra time to take in the horse race.

The race between Wiley Birch's horse of Golden and Albert Townsend's of Cassville, Saturday, attracted a great many and considerable money changed hands, some say exceeding $1,000. The Townsend horse "Bird", won by 27 feet clear. Bird is an Abdullah-Cleveland bay stallion, 7 years old, 16 hands and weighs about 1,200 lbs. He was formerly owned by J. W. Johnson of McMurty Springs. The gray is 2 years old of Blue Brimmer-Coaldeck stock and was recently brought from Texas County. The stakes were $50. Steve Pate rode the winner, Mr. Birch backing his own horse.

C. W. Edens, W. J. Farwell and J. J. Wallen are certain they saw the spook near the Exeter road one night last week. Wonder if any one else did?

Another unconfirmed rumor of a shooting has reached town. This time it is in Liberty township. John Churchwell sootiest and a son of Jim Parkston shootee. Scene watermelon patch.

Mrs. G. G. Bayless has gone to McDowell to join Mr. Bayless, who is teaching at that place.

Mrs. Louisa Martin, mother of Mrs. O. P. Murphy, and grand-daughter, Rebie, are visiting relatives near Garfield, Ark.

Col. Holliday of Shell Knob, accompanied by his daughter, Clara, and Miss Ross Sparlin of Mineral Springs, passed through town Tuesday en route to the Purdy reunion.

Married Friday, August 24th, 1893, at 6:00 pm at the residence of H. W. McCracken. Dr. Otto H. Thiele and Miss Floresa Oleatha Halley, born of Cassville, Rev. E. W. McCracken officiating.

Dr. Thiele is well and favorably known as an excellent dentist and since coming to this city has been closely associated with its musical talent, having been a member of the orchestra since its acceptation?, and is a leader of the Cassville Cornett.

Miss Hailey is one of the leading society young ladies of Cassville and daughter of ex-sheriff Hailey. She graduated from the Cassville high school in June in the class of '93. The happy couple were the recipients Saturday night of moonlight serenades by the orchestra and cornet band.
