E. Arnaud, a prominent farmer of south of town, is quite badly cut and bruised as the result of trouble with Mike Flaherty of this place last Saturday. Mr. Arnaud was leaving Peirce [Pierce] City ahead of Mr. Flaherty who was driving fast and tried to pass the first team. Mr. Flaherty's rig ran against the Arnaud carriage, throwing the occupants out. One of Mr. Flaherty's horses was thrown to the ground, the men had some words in regard to the accidents which lead to blows. Mr. Arnaud was overpowered and held for about an hour until officers arrived from Peirce [Pierce] City. He was so badly cut and bruised that he was hurried to Dr. Worley's hospital where his wounds were dressed, the worst being a knife cut on the forehead. A warrant was sworn out for the arrest of Mr. Flaherty on charge of assault, the preliminary trial to be held Wednesday morning at Pierce City, provided Mr. Arnaud is able to appear. Monett Times

Reports of the public schools of Missouri show 60 schools having annual sessions of less than four months and 700 having less than six months. In some of the rural districts the yearly maintenance does not exceed $150, which includes absolutely every expense. Obviously conditions such as these deny the children their natural birthright.
