| Exeter News: Mrs. Elizabeth Boucher, age 81, died at the home of her son, W. A. Boucher. The remains were interred in the Washburn Cemetery, Friday. Mrs. Boucher was one of the oldest settlers in this part of the county. Exeter News: The five-year-old son of N. J. Tally died Sunday afternoon of bronchitis. The remains were interred Monday afternoon at Vineyard Cemetery. Exeter News Items: Miss Sallie Brisco returned Thursday from her holiday trip to Monett and Aurora, and resumed her school duties Monday morning. Exeter News Items: Chas. Martin and family have removed to Flat Creek, near Cassville. Jenkins News: Frank Galloway is in Arkansas buying cattle. New Site News: On Dec 24th J. C. "Jim" Means and Miss Alice Long were married. Mineral Springs Items: Died Dec. 31st of consumption, Mrs. George "Ellen" Armstrong, age 27, and on Jan. 2nd her baby died. She leaves a husband and one child. Obituary: Died of consumption, Dec. 31, 1806, Mrs. Ellen Armstrong, age 27 years, and on Saturday night, Jan. 2, 1897, the Lord saw fit to call her darling babe home to heaven, where it can ever be with its mother. She leaves a husband and one child behind and a host of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. She was an affectionate companion, a loving mother and a kind neighbor, liked by all who knew her. She professed faith in Christ about four years ago and united with the Church of God, of which she had since lived a member. The remains were laid to rest in Stubblefield Cemetery, Jan. 1, after services by Rev. John Thomas. Scholten News: Newt Hilton of this place, who holds a half interest in the roller mills on Carney branch traded it to Allen and Son for their place known as the Old Scott Farm in Jenkins. Hart of Granby will fill his regular appointment here Sunday. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tolley died Friday. Jos. Hudson is quite ill, being confined to his bed with pneumonia. | Mano News: Died, youngest child of John Pollard, burial was in John Easley graveyard. Mano News Items: C. H. Monday's infant child is very sick with grippe. Born, Jan. 14th, to Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Cassity, a fine, nine-pound girl. Mother and babe are both doing well, but I hardly know what to say about Russ. Mano News: John Pollard's youngest child died Monday. Two weeks ago it was badly scaled by turning over a kettle of hot water on it. The remains were interred in the John Easley grave yard, Monday. The bereaved have our sympathy. Aix News Items: Miss Maggie Fain and Miss Jennie Park were visiting our school Monday. Come again! Wm. Russell and wife of Webb City are visiting Uncle Willis, his father, at this place. He reports lead and jack as bringing good prices at Webb, though mining rather slow owing to so much water in the ground. Ash News Items: Died January 11, Miss Lundel L. Tanner, of pneumonia fever, age 21 years, 6 months and 3 days. The remains were laid to rest in the Buttry cemetery on the 12th last. AR.] A fine boy made an appearance at the Colonel Gurley's Sunday night. Mother and babe are doing well. Someone set fire to Mr. Westbay's barn on his farm five miles southeast of Purdy, Thursday night. About 500 bushels of corn, some hay, oats, farming implements, etc, the property of Tact Long, who lives on the farm were destroyed. Ash News Items: I. M. Van Zandt has sold out and gone to western Texas to make his future home. He is in Midland City, Midland County, 2,000 miles from the coast. He and family took the train at Garfield, Ark., at 9 O'clock p. m. and the third day at 11 O'clock p.m. landed safe and sound at Midland City. Osa News Items: Mrs. Estes Feaster died and was interred at the Forest Cemetery, Sunday. Died, Sunday, Jan. 24, "Tommy" Wilder, age about 14 months, baby of Frank and Nellie Wilder. Little Tommy died at his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred King, who have had the care of him as his mother died a year ago. Funeral by J. W. Edon? at Mineral Springs. May the father and relatives lean on the everlasting arms of Jesus. Washburn News Items: Little Minnie Pease has been quite sick for the past ten days. Washburn News Items: Miss Lella Northcutt of Purdy is visiting her aunt, Mrs. Ellen Denton. Washburn News Items: Mr. Boozier and daughter, Callie went to West Fork, Ark., Wednesday to attend the funeral of their son and brother, Henry, who was accidentally killed in Kosoma, I. T. Henry married the 14th of July last and leaves a widow, who was unable to attend the funeral. Washburn News: Uncle Johnny Ware has been on the grunt for the past two weeks. Washburn News: Conversation that passed between Jeff Berryhill and a friend Sunday morning: Friend - Going to church today, Jeff? Jeff - No can't go. Why, is it too bad for you to go out? No, not particular; but I have to stay home and nurse the big girl that come to our house last night. Obituary: Ben H. Kelly, Jr. born May 4th, 1895, died Jan 21, 1897, at Viola, MO, of pneumonia. The deceased was the only son of Dr. B. B. Kelly and wife. Little Benny was taken dangerous from the start through hope was not abandoned to the last. The remains were laid to rest in the Viola burying grounds, Jan. 23rd, witnessed by many sad hearts and tear stained eyes. The bereaved parents and relatives have the sympathy of the entire community, the host of whom have felt the severe sting of death and have witnessed the flight of many souls to the parents no less dear oh the other shore. Every year the Father calleth. Some love done to endless rest. And the heart, though filled with anguish, Could but cry, "He knoweth Best". But a year not distant, cometh, When we retread the vast unknown. We shall fled were our ransomed dear ones, Seated round the great white throne. Dillard Died, Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1897, Mrs. Sallie Long, age 102 years. Mrs. Long was one of the oldest persons in Barry County. About a year ago she dictated the following sketch to her life, which through the courtesy of Henry Dunn, we are able to give. This is to certify to the best I know, I am about 101 years or more of age. I was born in Old East Tennessee, in Green Co., Diction post office. My father died of disease they called the cold plague. He was about ninety six years of age. My parents came from Pennsylvania to Tennessee. My brother-in-law, Jake Fisher, went crazy and died in the Cherokee purchase. My grandfather and mother were killed in Pennsylvania by the Indians, so my parents told me many years ago. Bill Weston went to see about them and he was killed by the same tribe, by arrows shot through the head. He was my uncle, my father's brother. Then from Tennessee we went to Indiana, then from Indiana to Missouri in 1840, then went to Gentry in 1843, then went to Sullivan County in 1848, and back to Gentry County and lived there till 1875, and then came to Barry County, and the principal part of my time since has been spent in this county. My man, Jim Long, and his brother, Ruben Long, were in Old General Jackson's war and served three years and he came back home to Tennessee in the Blase Mountains, and my man Jim Long, came back home to old East Tennessee, Green County. We plowed with bull tongues and a wooden mold board to turn the dirt over what we call wings to our steel plows these days and times, and worked steers or oxen. I am the mother of ten children and have two alive. One of them, Martha Glenn, a girl of mine, is sixty years old and one more girl of mine is fifty-one years old. This is my baby. She lives in Albany, Gentry Co., MO. I live myself in Pasley district, with my girl Martha Glenn. Mrs. Mollie Claycomb and son went to Verona Monday on their way home to Pettis County, Mrs. Claycomb had been visiting her sister, Mrs. Nellie Wooten, and Mrs. Dora Talbert. Samuel M. Turner, of Shady Grove, who went to Eureka Springs last week for his health died there Tuesday, aged 38 years. The remains were brought here for burial today. Died, 12 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Blankenship. Burial was near their former home on Flat Creek. New Site News Items: The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Higgins died of pneumonia Saturday morning. Died, Mrs. William Rickman. Burial in Clay Hill Cemetery. Washburn News: The body of Mrs. Anna Johnson was brought up on a train for interment. Taken to home of her daughter Mrs. J. A. Frost and then buried beside her husband in Prairie Cemetery. She was very old and died of typhoid fever. Her daughter Mrs. Mary Moore and son Arthur are also ill with typhoid. Scholten News Items: Born Jan. 28, to Mr. and Mrs. Lemon Hilton, a nice girl. All doing well. McDowell News Items: The six-year-old boy of Chas. Green, who was kicked by a horse belonging to Mr. Paleston, is getting along fine. Five pieces of skull were extracted, two of them one inch long and three fourths inch wide. Washburn News Items: The body of Mrs. Anna Johnson was brought up Monday eve on the 4:30 train for interment. She was taken to the residence of her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Frost, until Tuesday, where she was laid to rest by her husband's side in the Prairie cemetery. Mrs. Johnson was quite old and died of typhoid fever. Her daughter, Mrs. Mary Moore, who had been with her mother was also brought home quite low with typhoid fever, and her son, Arthur, was down with same unable to attend the funeral of his mother. She was buried in Washburn Prairie Cemetery. Annie A., wife of S. M. Johnson, died Jan. 31, at Brightwater, age 69 years, 7 months, 2 days. She died at the home of her son Dr. Arthur Johnson of typhoid. She leaves 5 children. Burial was in the Prairie graveyard at Washburn. Died, 7 month old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Salyer of Viola. Burial in Clanton Cemetery. Grandfather is R. G. Salyer. Died, Feb. 6th near Oak Ridge, Nora, the daughter of Brother George & Sister Turner, age about 4. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Died, at the home of his parents, two miles north of Cassville, Feb. 6, son of Bob Anderson, age 12 or 13 years old. After nearly three weeks of great suffering the hour came for him to go. As he neared the last moment, with longing desire, with more than human power, looking up, called a name of his mother who had gone before. Religious services were held at the family residence, after which the remains were taken to the Cassville Cemetery, and laid to rest. Obituary: Died near Oak Ridge, Feb. 6, Nora, daughter of brother George and sister Sarah Turner. She was about four years old, a child more than ordinary, brightens, therefore she was joy of all the family, but her stay with us was short. Though she would sing her favorite piece; God with you till we meet again. She was buried the 7th in the Oak Ridge Cemetery after short service by the writer. We hope we meet again Where. Our spirits shall sorrow no more Not a sigh for the blessings of rest. Died, Feb. 6, the infant of Mr. and Mrs. Pink Howard, the parents were on the way home from Galena, Kan., when the death angel overtook them in Joplin. The remains were laid to rest at Mineral Springs Sunday at 4 O'clock. Roberts, at her home near Washburn. Corsicana News Items: Mrs. Clara Jeffries, mother of J. E. Jeffries of this place and Dr. Jeffries of Monett was buried in Corsicana graveyard on Sunday. She died in Aurora at the home of her daughter Mrs. John C. Gillham. She was born in Tennessee in 1812 and had lived in Tennessee and AR as well as MO. Granddaughters are Mrs. F. N. Neese and Mrs. L. B. Jones. Pasley News Items: Mr. Stubblefield has purchased forty acres of land from Tom Cunningham. Corsicana: W. Foote moved into the property lately occupied by L. Hunt. Corder Branch News Items: Mrs. Frank Etter? of Cross Hollows died Thursday and was buried Friday in the Sparks Cemetery. Lookout Mountain: Born to Albert Lytle and wife, a fine girl. Obituary: Bessie, daughter of A. W. and S. M. Roberts, died at her home near Washburn, Feb. 8, age 1 year, 2 months, and 8 days. Her stay on earth was short but during that time her loving heart so attracted her dear parents, brothers, and sisters that it was a great struggle for them to say goodbye. But He who took little children in His arms and blessed them has taken this little one to Himself - where she can never enter and where her teacher is perfect. The Good Shepherd has carried the little lamb across the river that the parents and loved ones may follow. Her remains were followed to the Horner Church by relatives and friends where her funeral was preached and the body buried in the cemetery. May the family be reunited in heaven. E. W. McCracken. Obituary: Annie A., wife of S. M. Johnson died at Brightwater, Ark., Jan. 31, age 69 years, 7 months, and 2 days. She was converted when young and joined the Missionary Baptist Church in August 1848, in which capacity she served God until He took her to the church of the first born which are in Heaven. Heb xii, 23. She was at her son's Dr. Arthur Johnson, when typhoid fever laid its fatal hand upon her. Her remains were brought to Washburn when the funeral was conducted and her body buried in the Prairie graveyard. She had been a sufferer for many years and was deprived of the public means of grace, that we never visited her at anytime that she did not delight in talk about religion and express great anxiety for the salvation of her children and request us to pray for them. And we are glad to state that her prayers were answered before she left this world as we are informed that all her children are converted. Thank God for praying mothers. She leaves five children - two boys and three girls - together with grand children to mourn their loss. But one by one they will come to the river and grasp the hand of mother where parting is no more. "Oh, how sweet will it be in that beautiful land; so free from all sorrow and pain. E. W., McCracken. For nearly thirty years, John Maxwell of Mineral springs has been a resident of Barry County, but his natively was near Mills Springs, formerly Atkinson's Mills, Wayne Co., KY, where he was born May 24, 1813, the son of Bazwell and Nancy Maxwell. He can just remember their moving about twenty miles southeast of Atkinson's Mills to near the south fork of the Cumberland River on the Goose Creek or Bean Station Road. Their purchases were made at Monticello twenty miles away on Canad_s? Creek and churches and schools were far apart. At that time slaves were common but the Indians had been removed to the Hiawassee purchase. It was in Casey Co., KY, that he came across a family with ten girls, five? pairs of twins - the largest barely able to nurse the smallest. About 1828 he moved to Jackson Co., Indiana where he entered his first school at the age of sixteen, and March 8, 1834, was married to Mahala Waddell by Squire Milhorn Hobeson, by whom there were born five boys and four girls, all of who are living but one son, the oldest, James Jefferson, he died in the rebel prison at Tyler, Texas, Oct. 6, 1864, after captivity since Apr. aspersions?. | F. M. Horn of Seligman brought word Friday of a rich discovery of lead on Geo. Reed's place in Roaring River Township. A large lead of blue mineral is said to have been discovered in the bed of a small creek and good size chucks have been picked up. New Site News: C. W. Fleetwood was enjoying or enduring the pleasure or pains of a disconnected tooth last week. New Site News: There was a family surprised and made happy, Friday. It being Richmond Teel's 27th birthday, his relatives and friends made a surprise dinner for him. It was a decided process and reflect credit upon the projectors. The afternoon was spent in social games and conversation. That evening the youngsters gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Banks and spent the evening in singing. Every one declared it a day well spent. Ash News: Born to R. L. and L. M. Bone, March 6, a bouncing big ten-pound boy. One more, they say for Mr. Bryan. Mother and babe are doing well and papa is convalescing. James O. Garner of Roaring River township has sold his farm to Doc Skelton and returned to Oregon where he formerly resided. | McDowell News: Bud Walker, son of D. C. Walker, shot a boy by the name of Taylor, the ball entering in front of the left shoulder and ranging towards the point of the right shoulder. He says it was accidental. Boy's should not be allowed to have such playthings. McDowell News: Mrs. Nina J. Burnett, wife to the late R. S. Burnett, deceased, has slow fever. Mrs. Judge Hutchens is also on the sick list. Died of consumption, near Culbertson, Neb., March 18, Caroline, wife of Combs Smith and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Marbut. The deceased was born near McDowell, on little Flat Creek, Nov. 41, 1863, where they lived until she was married. Early in life she embraced religion and became a member of the M. P. Church of which she was a constant and faithful member until death released her from her sufferings and she was wafted home by angels in heaven. February 23, 1895, she was married to James Smith of Culbertson, Neb., immediately after their marriage they returned to their western home where they lived happily together until separated by that inevitable monster, death. About one year ago she was taken of consumption and gradually grew worse. Feb. 1st her parents were called to her bedside, where they remained until the end came. She bore her sufferings patiently. Realizing that death was near, she sent an affectionate farewell to her brothers and sisters, saying "Tell them goodbye for I am going to heaven." The remains were brought back to the church near her old home where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Felix Horner. After which the remains were interred in the Calton Cemetery amid a throng of mourning relatives and friends. A cousin, Tursie Marbut. Licensed to Wed: William H. King's Prairie News: Eugene Carpenter, 17, of Monett & Miss Gertrude Crouch, 19, of Verona were married. The infant of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bradford, died Friday. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Gardner, I. B. Jones, and C. D. Manley accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Leake and family, Thursday, to Monett, with the remains of Miss Allie Leake, that were taken there for interment. A man given his name as Friday is in jail charged with stealing Harley Belt's horse near Corsicana. He was captured by Mr. Denny near Verona. A fellow by the name of Shockley who was recently released from the state penitentiary, was brought in from White River, charged with burglary. New Site News: Again the matrimonial trumpet has sounded and Alvin Rumbaugh and Anna Teel heard and obeyed. The summons by being united in marriage at the home of the bride's parents, on the eve of the 7th inst. They are both well and favorably known. Coming from good families and being raised close together, no reason can be seen why they should not enjoy a long, prosperous and happy life. They have the best wishes of a host of friends as they make a start in life on a farm near Purdy. Lookout Mountain News: Mr. Reed has moved his saw mill from the Bolding property in Thomas Hollow, near Seven Star to Mr. Seneseny's place. Lookout Mountain News: Born to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Lawrence, a boy, the 11th. It is thought its grandpa will survive, it being the only grandson in the family, and a McKinley to boot. A Double Wedding: Married at the residence of Cary Thomas, four miles south of Verona, W. C. Montgomery to Miss Lucy Thomas; also Pharis Thomas to Miss Dollie Stone, Squire W. H. Miller of Pleasant Ridge officiating. The grooms were dressed in the usual suit of dark, while the brides were the pictures of true girlish loveliness, dressed in white cashmere, elaborate trimmed with white lace and ribbon. After the usual congratulations all repaired to the dinning room where the table was loaded with many good things prepared by the brides' and grooms' parents. We wish both young people a prosperous and happy life, hoping their sky of happiness may never be dimmed with a cloud of sorrow. In the paper on April 22, 1897 was a very long article about Tom Sams who was acquitted. There were penciled drawings and details about the murder that Sams was tried for. | Calvin Skelton has finished his new residence and moved into it Monday. Miss Dora Skelton has been visiting friends and relatives at Monett the past week. Washburn News: Jas. Hancock has left Washburn, and gone with his family to make his future home in Kentucky. Died, April 25th, after a lingering illness, Grandma Daugherty. The remains were interred in the Washburn Cemetery, Tuesday. Mrs. Daugherty leaves one daughter and a number of grand-children and great-grand children and great-great grandchildren to mourn her loss. The bereaved have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. Leann News: Uncle Billy Thomas, with his son William, visited Thomas, with his son William, visited his sister, Mrs. Susan Whittington, on Gunters Creek, last week. New Site News: T. Fleetwood and family went fishing on Shoal Creek, Wednesday. New Site News: C. W. Fleetwood, was visiting friends near Exeter, the past week. Miss Ida Downing of Monett has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Hattie Norby. Turner of Gunter was looking after an administration on the estate of her late husband, Tuesday, Dr. B. T. Coppedge was appointed administrator. Hailey News: The home of Squire Phillips was made happy by the arrival of a McKinley son, April 20th. Mrs. Mary Stringer of Washburn was visiting friends in Cassville Monday. She was recently granted a divorce from Dr. Stinger of Rogers, Ark., with alimony, by the Benton County court. |
