The Grand Jury: A short Biography of the September Grand Jury:
William D. Gurley of Purdy was born Jan 29, 1851, in Madison County, Ark, and lived there until 19 years ago. He and Miss Emily Cook were married Jan 20, 1870, he moved to Barry County, where he resided one year and then moved to Granby, Newton County, where he resided nearly 7 years, when he returned to Barry County where he has resided ever since, excepting 2 1/8 years which he spent in Western Kansas, when he came back to Barry County satisfied. He is one of the Justice of the Peace in Shoal Creek Township, a member of the C. P. Church, a mason and a republican in politics. This is his first time to serve as a grand juror. Horace Maynard Murray of Sugar Creek Township, near Seligman, was born march 8, 1862 in Campbell County, Tenn., where he remained until ten years of age, when his father moved to Missouri and thence to Kansas, in 1886, he came to Barry County, where he has lived since. He engaged in school teaching and the rowing of small fruits and the nursery business, in whish he has been reasonably successful. He is a very lively old bachelor and enjoys the smiles of all the fair sex, and we believe would make a most excellent husband. He is a Democrat in politics.
G. W. Pennell of Pleasant Ridge Township, whose post office is McDowell, was born Oct 13, 1852 in Texas County, MO, and came to Barry County when a baby and has resided here the remainder of his life. He was married in 1872, to Miss Marls J. Duffy to whom have been born seven children with six living. He has been a tiller of the soil all his life. He is a member of the Christian Church, and a Republican in politics. Having lived in Barry County for nearly 36 years, he feels like a native born. H. M. Hilton of Ozark Township, whose post office is R. F. D. 2 out of Aurora, was born March 4, 1851 on Carney Branch, in Mountain Township, and has lived in Barry County all his life and is proud of his native county. He was married Feb 11, 1874, to Miss Louisa Forbis of Crane Creek Township, and they have had four children, all living and married, and the furthest any one of them live from their parents is 3 1/2 miles, all own farms and are farmers. Mr. Hilton and wife should be the happiest people on earth to have them pleasantly situated. Mr. Hilton is a member of the C. P. Church and a Republican in politics.
Geo. Bayless of Exeter Township, whose post office is Cassville, R. F. D. 3, was born Aug 17, 1850, in Alabama and left that state with his parents when two years of age, and went to Carroll County, Ark., near Berryville and lived there until the spring of 1864 when his father moved to near where Republic, Green County, MO, is now located. In the spring of 1866, they returned to near Berryville, Ark, and remained until 1867, when they moved to Barry County, MO, and located northwest to Cassville, and has since resided in that locality. He was married Oct 14, 1869 to Miss Martha E. Stephens, to whom have been born three children and all are living. He is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, a farmer and a Republican in politics. Judge H. E. Morrow of Viola, white River Township, was born April 3, 1842 in Zanesville, Ohio. His parents both died when he was quite small and he went to Michigan when 9 years old to live with an uncle. At the ate of 13 years he stated out for himself and when 15 years he commenced to learn the carpenter's trade. He attended school the winter time, and when the civil war commenced he entered the Union side in Co. A, 5th Iowa Infantry, and served four years and one month. After he war he married came west to Arkansas and left that state in 1876 and came to the vicinity of Viola, where he has since resided. On June 4, 1867 he and Miss Amelia Hackstein of Buffalo, New York were married to whom were born five children with three living. In November 1886, he was elected judge of the Probate Court of Barry County and made a very efficient official. He is a member of the Christian Church and a Democrat. The Judge says the only one distinguished himself was Lieutenant Worth Bagley, on gunboat Winslow - the first soldier killed in the Spanish American War at Cárdenas, Cuba - who was the Judge's cousin. The Judge's first wife died in May 1898. In 1900 he married Mrs. Minerva Rice.
Thomas Turner of Capps Creek Township, whose post office is Pierce City, F. F. D. 3, was born March 14, 1840, in Ireland, and came to the United Stated in 1865 and located in Louisville, KY, where he remained three years, thence to Indiana, where he lived twelve years. In 1877, he came to Barry County and located on his present farm where he has resided to this date. In 1873 he and Miss Mary F. Jones were married, to whom have been born ten children, one rare? suicide and nine of whom are living. He is a member of the Catholic Church, a farmer and Democrat. In 1894 he was elected county judge of this county ? the western district, but declined to serve the late Judge William Montgomery was nominated to to fill the vacancy. John H. McGuffin of Cassville was born Oct 30, 1844 in Franklin County, VA, where he lived until 10 years of age, when his parents moved to Surrey County, NC, where he lived until he moved to Barry Co., MO. In the year 1887, and located near McDowell. On Au. 15, 1883, he and Miss Mary D. Waugh were married in North Carolina, and have four living children. In 1890 he was elected County Clerk of the county, on the Democrat ticket, and served very efficiently for four years. At the end of his term of office he returned to his farm near McDowell. In 1906, he became identified with the Cassville State Bank, now the First National and was elected president of that instruction and moved back to this city. During he civil war he served under Gen. John C. Breckenridge and later was transferred and served inter Ger. Jubal A. Early two years. He is a member of the Baptist Church, a Mason and a Democrat.
F. Williamson of near Mano, Roaring River Township, was born June 26, 1845, Tazewell County, Ill, and went to Bourbon County Kan., in 1868 and left that state August 1882 and came to Barry County, locating in Roaring River Township. He spent the year 1899 in Oregon and then came back in home. He was married Sept 5, 1865 to Miss Mary E. Davis to whom were born six children, four are living. He is a member of the G. A. R. and the Missionary Baptist Church and is Republican in politics. He served in the Federal army during the civil war. F. E. Shepherd of Flat Creek, Mountain township, was born May 12, 1875, near Ash Grove, Greene County, MO, and lived with his parents at home until he was 20 years old and came to Barry County and located in Mountain township, where he has since resided. He was married Feb 2, 1898 to Miss Effie McCracken and they have five children. He has been a farmer all his life. He is a member of the A. H. T. A., at Flat Creek, and is a Republican in politics.
Thomas B. Yarnall of Flat Creek Township, near Cassville, was born Oct 7, 1871 in Wayne County, Ill., and left that state when eight years old and went to Phillips County, Kan., and resided in that state 8 years in 1867, he came to Barry county and located in Liberty Township, and has resided in this county ever since, excepting 16 months, which he spent in North Dakota. On Dec 24, 1893, he and Miss Abigail McClure, only child of Thomas McClure, were married, and they have three children - two boys and a girl. He is a farmer and a breeder of fine stock. He is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and a Democrat in politics. John P. S. Plancheon of Monett was born Dec 20, 1860 in Uruguay Republic, South America, and went to France and came to America in 1875 and located near Monett, where he has since resided, except thee years he spent in California. He was married July 12, 1884 to miss Martha M. Reynaud, to whom have been born seven children, Waldensian Presbyterian Church and the A. H. T. A. Society. He is a Bryan Democrat.
